  1. it's a great idea on Design a Web Page in Under 5k · · Score: 1

    I try to challenge myself sometimes as a web developer to actually make pages with one table, no embeded tables, or find kewl ways to make 3 color pages (black, white, color)...

    I think my personal site is a total of 30k... with about 10 pages under it... but that has frames.

    it's great to have this as a contest, and i hope that a lot of design houses see this contest, see some great results, and maybe start considering this as a design MOVEMENT instead of as a trivialty. It would be nice to have a corporate website load in under 5 seconds no matter what modem you're on, and if it can look good in under 20k, that says something.

    I think they had a rule against pulling from other pages... all had to be self-contained.

    you could make a javascript that writes more tables and code... through in some kewl color cell stuff, refresh codes... make it really dynamic.

    but what about CONTENT (something most of the web is lacking)?

    yes, you could make quite the nifty page using Macromedia Flash... and the code of the page would be 3k for all of the detection javascript, and the flash file would most definitely be over the 5k limit.

    now all a mass marketeer, looking to blanket all of Hamburg with promotionals, will only have to run a script to gather all of the first and last names of residents of Hamburg, put a "." between the names, and tack on the email ending, and viola! they have an email listing of the entire area.

    great idea, perfect idea. almost as good as the m$ inventing aliases and shortcuts.

    well, I've had some weird dreams. I've had dreams where at some point in the dream, I had to take a piss, so I did. Weird thing was that in real life, I'd just pissed myself.

    for identity purposes, I'll just name him "spank".

    "spank" has a few issues, one of them being that we all think he's not quite certain of his masculinity.

    anyway, I have found that he overly enjoys being the female character in most games, and can often be seen trying to mimick sexual positions with the characters on the tv or monitor, and making them make sexual sounds (ie bumping lara croft into a wall).

    now, does this mean he's an over-sexed male doing male things, or is it that he's exploring his feminine side?

    what i should have stated is that people keep on pointing to the state of the NASDAQ and the DOW as an indicator of the financial state of the world/country, where all it really is is a market correction.

    a crappy stock market does not necessitate a recession.

    get over it! we're not in a recession. it's just a market correction.

    notice: the DOW is still above 10000 (quite healthly infact)

    so the NASDAQ is down... hell, it DOUBLED in two years!!! of course it was going to correct... any economist worth his/her salt could have told you there was going to be a correction.

    what they didn't tell you is that in a correction, the ride down is much faster and harder than the ride up. And considering the double of the NASDAQ in a year, the halving in 6 months is justified.

    maybe this recovery will actually be a graceful stride with it's legs under it.

    but if Linux is so secure and hack-proof in a correctly installed system, why should the NSA need an "ultra" secure version of Linux to be created/developed?

    why wouldn't they just have some linux guru's monitor the system and close off the trapdoors?

    are we always forgetting about the end consumer? who cares if there's all this information out there and nobody to regulate it? the fact of the matter is that the consumer will perform the predatory darwinism on the information. Yes, some information will lay dormant for years and years... residing in digital form on some server that's in a closet and everyone's forgotten about. But who cares?

    User's will sort through the bad information. Word of mouth will come back into vogue with which news sources and media fonts to drink from. We're already doing it. I don't surf the web anymore. I only go to sites that friends recommend. Why bother?

    The main problem right now is the search engines. Back in the glory days, search engines are how you ended up somewhere. Now it's all brand name media. As search technologies improve, so to will the ability to sort information to what's relevant to what you're looking for.

    The web is about empowering the user/consumer, and that's what it will do to media. The Olympic Games got sucky ratings this year because media forgot about the end user. They suffered as a result of this by paying out millions and receiving a small ROI. They learned that the end user is really king, and that they can't always dictate the terms of their coverage to the consumer.

    and why convert to WAV? Nero does it automatically, as do many other burning applications.

    i am a thief and know what i'm doing is wrong.

    unlike many of the people here I don't pretend to believe that what i'm doing is right, legal, ethical, etc.

    fucking loser? think i'm above the law? nope. i know i can get away with it, and do. I support artists by paying $40 to see them in concert and buying their stupid tee shirts. but i will never support them by paying $20 for a $0.50 cd.

    we're all pirates and doing fairly illegal stuff

    not to say that the RIAA is doing stuff fairly, but they are doing it legally.

    i'll admit. i've bought 1 new cd in the part 5 months, while i've burned 200 high quality cds from mp3's with a bitrate for 192 or higher that I downloaded from Napster. I download the mp3s, burn the full cd's, then delete the mp3s to make room for more. I use amazon's recommendation system to pick out which cd I want next based on whether I like the one I just downloaded or not.

    I bought that 1 cd because I couldn't find it on napster and I had $10 off at BN.com while I was buying books.

    Don't tell me what we're doing is legal. It isn't, and shouldn't be. But I do it anyway because I love music but detest paying $18/cd

    I've heard rumors about the spam and ramen combination.

    The rumor is that through the excessive imbibing of preservatives and salts used in the packaging of these two mainstays, it is possible to increase your life-span because of their intrinsic ability to preserve foods through long periods of time...

    they induce a sort of hibernation after a month of that being all you eat, at which point, you go into stasis. At any given moment, people can "thaw" you out by soaking you in a vat of warm water (similar to what was done with Han Solo in "Return of the Jedi"

    - nope. you're making the same amount whether the stock splits or not. Face it. And if you're really worried about a 1/16 up or down, you really should get another job as shown by the daytrading info out there.

    no offense, but the average investors doesn't make a difference to the stock price. Fund managers and investment bankers that buy in blocks way and above the means of the normal joe investor are the ones that move the stock. "Market Makers".

    One reason that it DOES make sense for companies to split their stock is to make it more available to their employees who have options and strike prices on their shares. The company really doesn't care about joe investor in terms of making the stock price more available.

    One other thing that splitting the stock IS good for is increasing the float (number of outstanding shares). Increasing the float generally stabilizes the stock price a bit, especially in low cap stocks or stocks that only sold a few million shares. This prevents run-ups on unavailable shares of stock.

    being on the giving end doesn't make you more dangerous to the general populous. I think the ones giving out the initial punishment are the true weaklings. The ones that are quiet and just take the abuse are the ones that are more likely to retaliate one day in a much more dramatic fashion. What was that Michael Douglas movie? Falling Down? You see hiim take crap from everyone and everything, and then one day he just cracks and starts blowing stuff up and shooting up everything? It's Hollywood, but it's pretty close to the truth. The ones that take shit all of their lives are the ones that are most likely to pop their tops and go on a rampage. And the ones that take out their pent up anger by homing their imaginary skills on quake and doom could just be practicing for the big day...

    not that I really think that 1st person shoot-em-ups are to blame, but I could see them as helping establish the mindset and dulling the boundaries between real life and fiction... especially in a kid whose mind is troubled and not quite thinking straight.

    I'm curious, but how many of your would actually say "ALT-CONTROL-DELETE"?

    normal pronunciation, correct me if I'm wrong, would be "CONTROL-ALT-DELETE", wouldn't it? Don't most people, in the instances when they have to, go from left to right? And wouldn't you say it aloud the same way that you normally hit the buttons?

    now try doing it the way Gore suggested.

    depends...

    are you arguing over the translation or the original document?

    if it's the translation, that could be construed as an original piece due to liberties that the translator took in bringing the diamond sutra over to another language (a port if you will). However, it's not truly a port in the strictest sense since "poetic license" could have been taken on the wording of passages.

    in this case, it becomes an open-source model, but not GPL? correct me if I've come to some bad conclusions here.
