  1. This is why I love the Cloud so much! Let put everything in the Cloud, and nothing in safe private networks behind good firewalls.

  2. What sensationalist tripe. What are they going to do, strand millions of lower-income people who can't afford to replace their $2000 clunker with a $30,000 new car?

It's actually quite worse than that. You would force them to buy a $30K commuter car, and then force them to rent some kind of long range electric every time they wanted to go see Yosemite.

The biggest problem of all is the limited range of electrics. People always say "The average person travels under 100 miles a day", and that's true. However, many of us have loved ones we visit on the weekend, and taking a 10 hour round trip weekend to visit the in-laws just became impossible when we have to stop every few hours for a few hours of recharge.

Many people just can't afford another car for long range only, so they buy the compromise. Drive the mini-van to work with it's 22mpg because it's still cheaper then getting an econocar and a minivan. Personal experience talking.

  3. Isn't this the same guy who's pushing Solar Power and electric cars to save the environment? Wouldn't those rockets create an awful lot of poisonous gasses? No sir! Just take your time and sail there on a solar/wind powered boat!

  4. Actually, if we got rid of all bureaucrats and politicians, the resulting decrease in hot air would lower global temperatures by 2 degrees.

  6. The "taxpayer" did not directly fund the Telco networks, anymore than the taxpayers directly funded your employer's IT upgrade last year.

Pure semantics! When the govt. forces you to pay extra so that said money can go where they want it to go, it's a tax! If they renamed the Income Tax deducted from you paycheck every week to Employee Usage Fee, would you fell any better?

Cheap? Not really. Given that for another $100 I can get better specs, a real storage device, and an operating system that's $100 to buy (I realize some don't want Windows), the cost of a Chromebook is really expensive. Not to mention Google spying on you!

  13. Depends on where you live. In some places, a squatter is simply removed by law enforcement. In others, a squatter may be removed in a body bag as the homeowner comes back to find someone "burglarizing" their home. Don't try that in Stand Your Ground states!

You confuse security with idiocy. Just because there is a secure system, doesn't mean that an idiot can't screw it up!

  17. Heck NO! I pay for the best slippers, so my wife's feet are comfortable -- she won't wear shoes in the house. Sadly, it looks like childbearing is no longer possible - we were trying for another - but now we foster. And while she cooks a fine meal, she too busy homeschooling, babysitting, gardening and taking care of the animals to stay in the kitchen too long.

My wife just called, and told me we're out of milk. Why do I need a smart fridge? Not only that, but I don't want to program a menu into it so that it will tell me what I need to buy for next weeks meals. That's what the wife is for.

The things I need they don't make, like a smart tackle box to tell me if I have enough lures and leaders for the weekend trip to the fishing hole, or the smart gun safe to tell me if I have enough turkey shells for Turkey Season, deer loads for Dear Season, etc. Those are things I don't trust my wife to get right.

Of course, this being Slashdot, many of the nerds never got far enough away from the computer to get a girlfriend, much less land her (i.e., get her to marry you). For those, who cares, your life is too boring anyway, no-one wants to spy on you, but lots of companies want to sell you crap to fill up your lonely hours. Maybe one of those lifelike companion robots...
