I've got a couple sites running Qmail, djbdns (tinydns, dnscache, etc), courier, and sqwebmail/squirrelmail and it simply rocks. It is a bit of pain to get installed but the actual configuration of the software itself is so simple it is worth the pain. Bind vs tindydns config files are simply hilarious because the tindydns one is just so damn simple! Qmail is much the same.

Once the Gentoo ISO burned to CD is on hand does the Gentoo install require much more downloading? I'd like to give it another try but I'm on 56k for a while. I did check out gentoo.com but I couldn't figure out how much things had changed since I last tried it quite a while ago.
If you don't want to focus nearby when looking at a monitor, just ask your optometrist about "computer glasses". They are glasses that allow you to perform close work while being focussed further away and they do help with eye strain.
I've had two pairs of glasses for the last couple months - my regular -4.25 and some lower powered ones for use with the computer. This is an excellent solution. Before the computer glasses I often had tired eyes and slight headaches but the computer glasses took away a lot of this. The last two weeks have really proved this to me as I lost the computer glasses in a move and haven't replaced them yet.
One other tip - avoid America's Best unless you have money to blow or you know their little scheme.
But if you only print a couple pages a week the CIS system doesn't pay for itself. Plus the worst thing is the less you use it the more it gets gunked up. That is AFAIK. If you plan on only printing 20 pages/week or month then definately do a little more digging before investing. On the other hand, if you're like me, with a digital camera and time to burn, a CIS system is awesome! But the local Walmart may be able to beat it depending on your desired output... Hrm...
Well of course that is possible. I was just trying to figure out what slackware-current was but slackware.com isn't helping much. If it was anything like freebsd-stable well...
There have been some comments/summaries about BitKeeper and efficiency on the Kernel Traffic. If you don't have time to read the linux kernel mailing list Kernel Traffic is wonderful.
Yeah, I'm the same way with tweaking the configuration. I needed to get php+apache+mysql running on a win2k laptop so I needed something fast. My normal platforms are freebsd & linux so I don't have any tips on the build/config problem you were having...
I did remember the distrib I was thinking of - PHP Triad. It was pretty up to date when I downloaded it. I tried to find out what is in the 2.11 release but I gave up after a couple seconds. I'd just download it and take a look or check out the other replies in this thread.
Have you throught of trying the apache+php+mysql distribs for windows? I know there are a couple out there but I can't remember any names. A google search on your specific problem might bring back a few relevent clues... But the distrib versions are probably the quickest way to get going and work on something else.
I agree - LCDs are cool because you *can* see JPEG compression artifacts. I use a laptop to save/view photos while I'm out of town. The camera can also plug into the TV but the LCD is about 1,000,000,000x better than the shoddy TV picture. I'll take the LCD anyday for viewing photos...
I have wondered though if professional digital photographers will start a demand for tiny CRT monitors. Think of a 5" CRT that can do fairly high resolutions... Just a pipe dream and probably the degree of percision required to get a good picture at high resolution on a CRT plus the market size would make it a no go for any sane person.
Well that is a shame then. Thanks for correcting me. I'm trying to remember if I ever ordered from PetsWarehouse.com - I think I did a while back. I sent the obligatory "I'm an ex-customer" email a couple hours ago just in case.
I think you have to go talk to these organizations. How are they supposed to get word of every lawsuit? Maybe the defendent did that but if he was so quick to settle I find it doubtful.
Why? Because it's cool? Server information done? I'm sorry but all of this is just to hook in the business people who can get these things budgeted quicker than the techies. The "benefit" that such devices provide is: 1) higher cost 2) lower performance 3) poor functionality 4) vendor lock 5) lost productivity trying to get the damn things functioning properly
Replacing PC servers with devices like these and Cobalt boxes is a joke both in cost and performance.... If you have a problem that results in your continously tinkering with servers maybe you should address it instead of buying your way out of a fixation:). I'll take a standard PC anyday while you fondle your beautiful Cobalt.
In the long run I can see that NAS devices will be beneficial but right now the cheap ones simply aren't mature enough to trust...
Well with those details included I can see why it does suck quite a bit! I'm really surprised that admin didn't ask you before going all bushy tailed and buying a brand new machine.
If I were you I'd get them to buy one more hard drive (20-30gb are damn cheap these days) and put Linux on that. If you aren't going to get anything back for the Windows license you might as well keep the ability to use it just in case (unless you don't want that ability which I could understand!).
Maybe my day sucked so much that it has changed my perspective a bit... So for what it's worth I can understand where you are coming from and why my previous attitude (which somehow seems to be a bit close to the bushy tailed admin's) is a bit one sided...
But it wasn't your money and in the scheme of things eventually you'll need to upgrade. Sometimes just being thankful for what's given to you is better than going around saying "why, why, oh why god have you given me this $INSERT_WONDERFUL_OBJECT when my $INSERT_OLD_OBJECT was working so well?"
Sorry but you just sound silly. Maybe that isn't your intention but in all truthfulness that is how you come off to me. I could see your arguement but to me it's idiotic. Maybe that is because my car from the 1980's is dying and I'm getting ready to toss it.
Adios. And if you don't load linux up on that new computer you should go stew some prunes.
Yeah, my brother was going to become a farmer here in the US but it just isn't possible financially. Least not in any way I look at it...
Working on the farm during the summer vacation was enough medicine for me:). It's great physical work and if you have something to think about the chores aren't too bad but everyday for the rest of your life? Not me.
Matt Simerson's Qmail Toaster
Doh...
If you're running linux you could check out qinstall:
obua.org
They have a script for FreeBSD too but I prefer:

Have you tried the open source PHP optimizer APC:

Well of course that is possible. I was just trying to figure out what slackware-current was but slackware.com isn't helping much. If it was anything like freebsd-stable well...
Is there a way to upgrade your server reliably without physical access to the box?
Wouldn't this one be more appropriate?

That does sound like a very nice package.

Take a close look at the screenshots. Those are KDE programs with new names.
