It would be nice if someone would fix top or whatever subsystem needs fixing to reflex actual memory usage. Unfortunately I have this gut feeling that even then Mozilla will be one big fatty...

Maybe that is because open source software is by nature public instead of private? Sure there are tons of groups that start a project and it goes nowhere but I'm sure this happens outside of open source too. It's just nobody ever hears about it...

If free software can power my server I'm impressed. It looks like KDE2 will make a *nix desktop actually usable to many and include a great browser.

Saying that 5% of open source software is good while the remaining 95% is crap is stupid. You should be grateful for the open source software that makes it into the usable stage. Talk about looking a gift hourse in the mouth...

Opera runs on Win32, Linux, Mac, etc... On Linux and Win32 it runs very well - no experience with the Mac version.

You can get a free copy of opera at opera.com but it has ads. Sure it is payware but it has very good features like:

    a) small memory foot print
    b) good dhtml support (so far it has rendered all the sites unlike mozilla, yes I'm aware that the sites are crap but hey, least I can use them)
    c) fast!

I don't know why people talk about Mozilla's rendering being so quick. If you compare it to IE 5/5.5, Konqueror, or Opera it seems to be about the same speed...

Amen - some people get so up tight about overclocking. They don't take the time to read about moderate overclocking (ie pushing a Celeron CPU from a 66Mhz FSB to a 100Mhz FSB - all your components like PCI bus still at regular specifications except your cpu)... Instead they focus on the people who spend hundreds of dollars because they enjoy the hobby and of course the "effects of overclocking" which boil down to a little extra heat in reality. Nobody likes to have an unstable system. You can easily have a stable system if you go with the flow, keep the buses within reasonable specs (I stay at spec), and don't try to push a CPU that can't do it. If a CPU works for a large percentage of people (see the db at overclockers.com) and yours doesn't - tough shit, go buy another...

JWZ was frustrated by vgetty but that was some time ago. You should try it now... The hard part is finding a compatible modem (esp. if you want caller id/voice/fax/etc). I happened to get a Rockwell 33.6 Kbps modem that has caller id support and works just fine with vgetty for voice (not for fax though supposedly but I haven't tried it). Probably the easiest modem to get right now would be one of the USR ones (just get the right model).

vgetty itself was easy to setup and get going. I didn't have any problems at all really... Plus you can customize it with a perl to script how answering should be done (supposedly). They are working on scripting vgetty for more control on actions based on caller id so I'm not sure what the status at this exact point in time is...
