  1. Re:What's the Motive? on Paramount to Drop Blu-Ray for HD-DVD · · Score: 5, Insightful

Really? Has there really been a major outcry among studios that DVD was just too small? If there has been, I haven't been aware of it.

Besides, do you really think there will be another physical format after this? I'd be willing to bet that by the time this format war is finished and another one ready to begin, digital distribution will be quite ubiquitous.

  2. Unwinnable Situation on Microsoft to Ship New Malware Protection Utility · · Score: 3, Insightful
The entire thing is a catch 22.

On one hand, you have an easy to use OS that is prone to malware and spyware when not administered correctly.

On the other hand, you have an OS with a higher learning curve that is less prone to malware and spyware, but that requires the same level of expertise as it does to keep a Windows system free of the garbage that can easily plague a system.

In either case, it is up to the user to be more knowledgable about the product their using. I'm not going to pretend that I don't use Windows, but I can honestly say that in the year and a half since I last formatted, I still have yet to find any spyware, malware, or virii hiding on my system ... my system tray is still as bare bones as it was after installing Windows ... and, my computer still runs just as well and as fast as it did after reformatting. Now, with a CS degree, I consider myself slightly more knowledgable than the average user, but this doesn't negate the fact that it is possible to run Windows without compromising your system. You just have to have a clue as to what you're doing and know better than to visit questionable sites and click 'yes' to every dialog box that pops up and wants to install 'XXX Dialer' on your system.

I don't know if there is an easy solution, other than to make Linux or OSX or another more secure operating system more simple to use - and you can go ahead and tell me that your Grandmother runs Linux and has no problems, but the ordinary computer user is looking for more than a glorified Internet/Email machine.

Could Windows be more secure? Yes. Definitely.

Could Linux be easier to use? Yes, and just as equally so.

  3. Chocolate Factory is Not a Remake on War of the Worlds, Chocolate Factory Trailers · · Score: 5, Insightful
From what I understand, Burton's movie is not intended to be a remake, but rather a better interpretation of the book.

So, I think it would be well advised for those of you looking to this movie in the hopes (or the fears) that it will be an updated Willy Wonka to attempt to forget about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and instead view this movie as the screen adaptation of the book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.

In fact, if I remember correctly, Roald Dahl was not happy with 'Willy Wonka', which I can understand since the book is incredibly darker than the movie.

Hopefully, with Burton directing, we can get a more faithful interpretation of the book that stays true to the dark material.

  4. Too Soon? on Studios Face Off in Next-Gen DVD Format War · · Score: 3, Insightful
Personally, I still think it is too soon. I can understand the usefulness for next-gen gaming machines, but I don't see the average consumer wanting to buy into a new format so soon after upgrading an aging VHS collection to DVD.

I know this technology is still a ways off before it hits the shelves en masse, but I just can't see it getting a great response.

In the end, it probably won't even matter which format which companies support. Just like Betamax, Laserdisc, and Minidisc, if the consumer doesn't support it (no matter what the quality increase is) it will fall by the wayside.

I may be completely wrong, but thankfully, I'm sure you'll tell me if that's true.

    From the site:

Because the Kaleidescape Server stores the movies on fast disk drive technology, it virtually eliminates all of the overhead and waiting that is commonplace when playing a standard DVD: no loading of physical media, no waiting for the DVD menu to appear, and no confusing options to select; the movie just starts.
  6. Top Thrill - Worth the Wait (kind of) on 2005's Tallest Roller Coaster · · Score: 2, Informative

I had an opportunity to go to Cedar Point over the summer and ride TTD, and to be honest, the fact that it shuts down on occasion worked to our advantage. First, we waited in line for about an hour before it broke down. They said it would be a long wait and encouraged us to visit the rest of the park. We did, but once we saw it was back up, we came back. When we got back in line, it looked long as hell; however, since they were obviously expecting more problems, they intentionally kept the line short, but made it look long (the snake line is actually hidden on the other side of the coaster, so when you get in line, the most rationale thought is to assume that if you are one one side of the coaster, the other side must be full). Needless to say, we waited less than an hour the first time, and less than 45 minutes the second time. Both times, well worth the wait. It is a short ride, but when you get shot off the first time, the thrill is amazing. Also, definitely a lot less scary the second time!
