If you watched Borland... I mean Inprise... I mean, whatever they wanted to call themselves in their failed marketing attempts, then you'd see that it was true. I was a big advocate of Delphi, but Borland didn't help out their VARs at all. I worked for some huge projects which were using Delphi in a way that would have gotten a lot of attention- one was with two Fortune 100 companies, two were with huge government agencies, and another was with a huge shipper. All three migrated away from Delphi because of Borland's inattention to the project. When they started to migrate to .NET Microsoft shepherded them through the process, investing money into the project (in the way of on site trainers, help in architecture and conversion, and deep competitive discounts on visual studio and MSDN). Say what you want about the process, but this looks like suicide to someone on the inside.

No... Borland wasn't killed directly or indirectly by Microsoft. Borland shot itself in the head in a very public and expensive act of suicide.

I call BS to this whole supposition also. Personally, there's more to the story in my opinion. Game developers are alienating their users, but the only way the users can really strike back without ruining their own enjoyment is going to affect the retail channel. I was not enamored with digital distribution- especially since they're charging the same price with a negligible cost for their distribution channels. But then I began to see that I don't need to put the DVD in the drive- without having to hack my legitimately purchased game! Now I only buy digital, and have decided not to buy a few new releases because they don't have a digital option. And the National sales figures suffer as a result- you *have* to buy console releases from B&M so they all get included- digital distribution channels are *not* included in the sales figures.

Indeed. I remember being at college, my first time away from home, very intimidated because everyone seemed so much more ready for college than I. I walked into the commons and in the midst of all of the cool people, some soon-to-be dear friends were playing AD&D unaffected by the stares and questions they received as people walked by. Gygax's own eulogy of himself from an interview: "I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else." I must say that I did the same thing. I needed a new dvd player, and 9 free dvds was more than enough to convince me to buy this one rather than a) a regular dvd player with no free dvds or b) a $400 blu-ray player when they'll eventually drop in price. Add to that a discount at Best Buy from one of their 10% off coupons and I'd say I got a hell of a deal.

In the week in question, HD-DVD players were just coming off of a special, while they were giving away Blu-Ray players with purchase of HD TVs, and these free Blu-Ray players were counted in the total? Lying with statistics- it's done all the time. Don't drink the Kool-aid!

And your argument would be wrong. I had a choice to be a pianist or to be a programmer. I chose to be a programmer. That doesn't mean I'm not a musician of reasonable standards- I play classical music of the highest caliber and difficulty. I just choose not to do it in front of an audience. And I'm sure there are more that are like me than are performers. It's all in choice, no matter what talent you have.
