As a programmer I think Microsoft missed the boat in a totally different way. A long time ago before Windows 2000 there was an announcement that Microsoft was going to release an OS with a replaceable UI so that the server could have a lite weight UI and the desktop a more substantial one. They never delivered. I think this would have made all the difference in the world. There there could have been the same OS on all platforms and a replaceable UI to meet the needs of each platform.
With different OSes for each platform it was the most frustrating thing to develop an app for the desktop and then when porting it to Windows CE finding out that half the library/systems calls didn't even exist in that OS. I was excited again when I read that they were finally going to put the same OS on every platform with Windows 8 but then when they forced the same UI on everyone I was again greatly disappointed.
I am a Windows developer, have been for 25 years. I have an Android phone and tablet and love them.
I agree with the wiki statement. I think MS should put all documentation on a wiki so that people that actually use the stuff can add actual useful examples and fix ambiguities, etc. This would make the documentation much better over time.
>Windows Mobile's Win32 API is easy to code. It is just like the Win32 desktop.
Except it isn't. I tried for quit some time to port several desktop apps to WM6.5 and although I could use the same programming language and API a lot of the system calls didn't exist. I lot of networking functions were missing, a lot of encryption functions were missing, the phone OS was just too cut back.
I think this should be a fight fire with fire type thing. You can not fight a tyrannical government who has full auto high capacity weapons with your single shot pea shooter. The second amendment is not for hunting or just home protection after all.
Blah... It is easy to set up WiFi security on your router, what sucks however is getting it set up on your DirecTV, Wii, PS3, the five smart phones in the family and what about when the kids bring their friend's XBox over and your coworker or worse yet father in law comes over with their laptop. Setting wireless security is really a giant pain in the butt when you are not the only person who is going to use it and your laptop is not the only device.
This was a little surprising to me but I was having a problem with my AT&T HTC Tilt 2 phone and tech support had me turn the phone OFF and they then pushed an update and turned it back on for me so OFF isn't really off anymore.
I am a software developer for a large defense contractor and to be honest, our IT security makes my job harder and adds more stress to my life. For instance all urls with the letter sequence 'mail' anywhere in it is blocked. All IM is blocked. I understand the need for security but it sucks. So - you make me less happy.
Wow you really are a typical/. reader aren't you. For a large percentage of people that I know a true "personal" vehicle is kind of worthless. Where do I put my wife, my three children, my Father-in-law, and my dog? I do commute to work but like most people around me most of my driving is not done alone. I have a BIG car and most of the time it is on the road it is full.
I played with friends late into the night once (well many times) and then while driving home kept trying to "AIM" my car as if I couldn't just turn hy head to see what was around me and at one point saw something small that looked like a mine in the road and yanked the stearing wheel to avoid it. Good thing I was alone and it was late at night.
Not even close. In my case going from Dish Network to Comcast 105mbs cable internet my bill went from $160 to $65 even with all those add ons.

I also love getting the log of the entire conversation at the end.
