I'm assuming you want to automatically/programmatically discard the one with the least/most artifacts. In this case there are very few programs around, but I'm working on a rules engine for my program that may be able to help you in future. Please evaluate DuMP3 at http://dump3.sourceforge.net/ to see if it may suit your needs.
To quote from some other post: "In a war between weapons and armor, weapons always win". It's time to take the war to the streets instead of cowering in our imaginary secure cells. Next step: take care of the servers...
4) nagware: have not tried to do this as any reasonably proficient programmer will be able to remove the nag and repackage, but it may generate a higher donation yield
I have open sourced several projects in various stages of completion and the way I see it you have several (not mutually exclusive) options:
1) software as a service - use sourceforge marketplace or something similar (this option I have not tried yet)
2) accept donations for your project - current yield for me in 3 years $30
3) pepper your website with ads. not very nice and may put off some users but it does generate income - current yield $64
Thats it other than creating a foundation/company and getting a sponsorship.
I use http://www.carbonite.com/ to back up all my machines. It is relatively cheap. Just remember that for "unlimited" one should read "about 50GB". After that the transfer speed becomes so low that it's almost not worth it.
I'm surprised nobody suggested an endless fax. That is assuming they have a fax machine. Take two pieces of paper, glue them together on the short side and feed through fax machine, once one piece has fed through glue the other side together and leave running. Works better if the pieces of paper are completely black and even better if done at night so that the fax machine is empty (paper and toner) every morning when they come in.
I just love the Trackball Marble FX. Have used it for years and my RSI has not gotten worse at least. And it is a good security device. Ever seen someone that used to a normal mouse try to use one of these;-) Unfortunately Logitech has stopped making it and the replacements don't look as promising!
Mine was a 128 too. It could go at 2MHz (with the screen blanking) - wow what a speed!!!! It drew those CAD drawings in minutes if not seconds!!
Unfortunately someone thought it was a PC and stole it!
Aaah the good old days!
I've been using Moodlogic for years. It works well for mainstream music. Some of the more rare items it does not recognize. Also it's got way of classifying music by tempo, year and feel (happy, sad, etc.) which should overcome some mislabeling of music.
As anybody who's ever used (or had to use:-( ) SpinRite will tel you, your HDD not only lies to you, it cheats and steals as well. To whit:
It makes it seem there are no bad sectors, when in fact the surface is riddled with them, only the manufacturer hides this fact from you by having a bad sector table. Also errors are corrected on the fly by some CRC checking. You can ask the SMART for the stats, but you can do very little about the results it gives you, other than maybe buying a new disk (which most likely has a different set of problems - you just don't know what they are). And where have you ever seen a 40Gb drive that is exactly 40 billion bytes big?
The bottom line is:
Reliability is NOT profitable.
Where would Hardware manufacturers be if we didn't have to buy a new disk every 2 years!
I agree. Get something like ABIT SecureIDE and install it in every machine. Then you kill 2 birds with one stone.
1) you can be sure that only authorised personel can use the machine and
2) if the drive dies, you unplug it and you can be sure that no one can read the data on it.

Nobody has mentioned soylent green yet? Or perhaps a similar solution: feed the homeless to the hungry.

here is another silly way to kill a machine

symfony rocks! Doing my first PHP project right now and using symfony saved a sh.tload of work.

I really hate this damned machine!
I wish that I could sell it.
It never does quite what I want,
But only what I tell it!
