Escalator and Elevator also were both trademarks that lost it due to "Common Use", as trade mark law puts it. Kleenex was so very close to losing it about 10 years ago.
for us to fight those who would destroy American freedom, we Americans must remain FREE ourselves, for to do otherwise would be to FURTHER the cause of our enemies. yet, those very politicians who claim to fight for our protection are doing so at the COST OF OUR FREEDOMS. with these politicians left unchecked, "live free or die" will soon no longer our choices. soon, it will be just "live or die." it seems to me that our enemies are winning without lifting a finger; OUR government is doing it FOR them.
seriously, "fixed numerous css bugs". pardon me while i laugh until i shit my pants.
unless they re-write it from the ground up, it will be the same, bloated, slow-ass browser, out-performed by almost every other on the market.
anyhow, most people i know use alternatives for better security, and because IE is almost incapable of parsing dhtml/css anywhere near correctly. this is not to mention the fact that cookie management, pop-up control, and many other features that IE will either never have or will never function as well as jsut about any alternative.
i'll be happy to eat my words as soon as the little magic gnomes come out with a version of IE that isn't a waste of hard drive space. until then, any change to IE will only ever be for the worse, no matter how hard they try.
i never claimed that MS alphas are better than what apple has made, so stick a tampon in it.
what i did claim, however, is that MS's alphas are breaking new technological ground than is apple at present. way more. in ways apple hasn't even thought of yet... and furthermore Alpha 40074 with dce enabled is far more functional and stable (sans the application and driver support) than is tiger RTM (8A428). i'm no liar, mr.-i-like-to-call-people-names.
this is a matter of fact, not opinion. and if you don't know any better then try RESEARCH. get real info and cross-reference. i am an MS and Apple beta tester. have been for years. i know what i'm talking about. do you?
good point. i've been beta testing all sorts of things recently, especially longhorn (4051 and 4074) and tiger (8a420 and 8a428). sure, longhorn's alphas blow away tiger's latest-and-greatest. in fact, enough so that Apple will have to pull a fuckingmiracle out of their ass just to compete... a miracle like Adobe Flash and Flash 3D.
another point in fact, the current alphas are stble enough to use as a primary OS-- it just has little or no application and driver support. now with the new wave of betas this summer, you're going to see that change.
one thing, however, that you will not see change this summer is people talking about longhorn's latest-and-greatest. seriously, if you're only exposure to longhorn is heresay and unrevealing screenshots, you ain't seen nuthin' yet. the XAML scriptable realtime 3-d interface that MacOS won't have until it's next major version release, OS11 or later.
so it comes to this: with all the work going into longhorn (2+ years so far-- mostly for the new graphics subsystem), and all of the work going into Tiger, Apple simply hasn't had the development time to complete a project so big as to supplant Quartz Extreme (OSX's current graphics subsystem). sure apple has stated that they're slowing their OS releases, prolly for this very reason-- and the customers are getting bitchy about having to pay $130 each time Apple forces an upgrade by making sure nothing new works on it's cats-of-the-past.
i love windows. i love MacOS. but while OSX is prettier and nicer and seems more refined, windows has several times the application and hardware support, and microsoft has taken the lead time-and-time again. i'm sure we'll all be on this see-saw ride till october of last year.
pile of shit, perhaps, but it's funny how Microsoft's pile of shit is still better in Alpha than is Apple's latest-and-greatest. over and over again...
first, this whole "sometime in the future" business won't fly. in the 2 years longhorn's been under development, they've pushed the release date back only once (from may 2006 to oct 2006). in fact, they have been very open about the promised date for some long time. so don't all act like no one knows when it's coming out just because you don't.
another thing: except for some under-the-hood changes, tiger is barely an upgrade, more of an update or service pack. in fact, shame on apple for making you pay!
as for the desktop search, who gives a crap who was first? they both have it, and longhorn's is far better, even in alphas 4051 and 4074. sure it's good in tiger (8a420 and 8a428) and more than is in windows xp, but the fact remains: it's not as good as the one in longhorn, and any innovation in OS X desktop searching will be reflected in future builds of longhorn. then, when longhorn adapts it or comes up with something better, OSX will pick it up. then here we will be again with idiots spouting "sure longhorn's is better but Ocelot or Leopard or whatever-cat-they-name-it-next is out now.
ya know, i've been hearing this debate for as long as anyone (my whole life, that is-- all 26 years, lol). i've been empassioned by it, and i even chose my career around it.
but you know what? i'm supposed to think that i still can't do anything. the entire system (not to sound like a conspiracy theorist or anything) is set up, amongst many other things, to make sure that no matter how opposed to something you may be, no matter how militant, empassioned, or whatever, you will do ANYTHING BUT get like-minded people together and go protest, or some other form of affecting change. and if you do manage, somehow, to get enough people together about a thing, it's either A) not enough (gay adoption) B) too loosely organized to be of any effect (gay marriage) or C) called out by those who are threatened by the change as lunatics, fanatical extreminsts, perverts, or, Dog forbid, unamerican (michael moore).
so, what does this say? it's like they say in poker: if you look around and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you. and us, like those who fought to get here, to be free in this great land of the tyranny and opression that our forefathers could no longeer bear (taxation without representation-- hmm... remind you of someplace?), are trapped... trapped in a state of suspended disbelief, numbing outselves with unbridled hedonism and self-indulgent denial ro our surroundings, in uncathartic aquiescence-- no, submission-- to what those in power have chosen as our fate. our elections can't be trusted, our politicians are all CEOs/corporate fatcats with hidden agendas, and the free, the brave... what have we? exactly what we were running from: the greed and opression of rich white aristocrats. and it's happening all over again-- but this time, it's not opression, it's "FREEDOM", and "LIBERTY", and "JUSTICE". it's the whool being pulled over our eyes. and the more we hear it, the more we believe it.
but why? why do we listen to this crap? why don't we stand up and shout, "you liars! give me back my freedom!"? because we want, we need so desperately to believe that we still have free speech, that we still have a right to a fair trial, and to not have our private homes searched unjustly... all those freedoms that they shove down our throats till we puke, that we are willing to create a fantasy world in which it all exists. population: 320 MILLION. but in the end, each and every fucking person on the planet, even if on the most unconcious level, knows this. but they won't admit it. not to others, and especially not to themselves. their whole world, their whole reality would come crashing down around them. welcome to the world of modern media.
just as ad agencies manufacture desire, the spin machines manufacture reality. slowly and surely they draw your attention farther and farther from what's really happening by distracting you with "pop" bullshit, into what's "really" happening, what's "news" (martha stewart goes to jail at the EXACT same time the opressive homeland "security" act passes?). the desire to care about anything other than who's doing who on the Real World or what the latest hair-style is "in" is washed out of us by dangling shiny objects in front of us. shiny obejects we try to use to forget the fact we're getting it up the ass. or they say "we're fighting terror," an oft-too-used term in political jargon. anytime something so reprehensible happens that it can't escape the public eye, "we're fighting terrorism". bah!
and it comes to this: we can either uprise on a national level and overthrow our government (great, now i get to be in the fbi database!), or do what i have chosen: to work my ass of, save up, and get the fuck outta dodge cuz there will be no uprising, there will be no revolt, and when the U-S-of-fucking-A folds in on itself, i don't want to be anywhere nearby.
hopefully the moon will be colonized by the english, and we can all live happily ever after.
crts, if nothing else, emit HUGE amounts of negative ionization (don't have the exact figures). now this, especially over long periods of time and day-after-day, year-after-year, causes the bra9in to produce more melatonin, causing a drop in mood level, ultimately leading to a "down" or "blue" or "depressed-like" feeling.
we were taught this over and over in school: if you use a crt, don't sit in front of it too long. go for a walk ever hour or so, or, my favorit as i live in florida, GO TO THE BEACH! the positive ions in the salt water wash all those CRT blues away in a flash! it's like degaussing your brain.
ya know, i have further gripes with the whole retail 'experience'.
i keep up on my news, and i know my tech stuffs. every time i'm in the store and overhear a rep or even some of the techs speak to the customers, it becomes very clear that most of them know absolutleey nothing about what they're selling. sure they may be able to regurgitate some sales pitchy desriptions of certain features and can show off pretty eye-candy parts of the os like expose and the dock's "genie" effect, but otherwise they typically can't answer even low-level tech questions from customers such as the difference between firewire and usb beyond the difference in physical appearance of the plugs. or worse, they make something up.
i go to that store a lot to check products out in person, etc, and i have, over time, heard just about every one of the 10+ employees bs their way through sales, incompetantly fumble through tech questions or software problems that can arise during product demos, and be ever-ready to pass you off to anyone else who can take the attention from you... sure they appear "happy to help," but when you ask theem something complicated or ask them to do something for you, they act put out.
on the other hand, everyone in there looks 10x more attractive than anyone else in the whole mall... weird.
modifying 3d objects in a 2d image or modifying objects within a layer? sounds like youcan't have one without the other, and that's not if they're not the same thing. j/k
lemme tell you though, i've been using photoshop since it was Aldus Photosytler, and the one thing i havve ALWAYS wanted in photoshop was to be able to manipulate objects at a sub-layer level, esp with the ability to give z-positioning!
look, the following is opinion. you may strongly disagree, so be warned.
that show has f*cking sucked since the 3rd episode. struggle after stuggle, from blalock's emotional bleed-through and crack whorage on the space-drugs, and scott bakula's transformation from an incredible actor into a stilted hack, this show was doomed from the beginning. they alienate the hell out of trek fans, especially the older ones, with their horrible inconsitancies and poor background research, piss-poor dialogue and incompetant directing.
it started when rick berman and brannon braga made the borg sexy. they were the scariest foe in trek history until they gave the borg boobs-- and big 'uns. with voyager, you could really see the beginning of the decline as the budget increased and the amount of fabric or jeri ryan's body decreased. they have trivialized everything that was meaningful about trek and change the whole concept of it. it used to be about peace and diplomacy and scientific discovery. confrontation was rare, but certainly necessary, but only when it was necessary was it used. now you see everyone blowing EVERYTHING up because that's what get's the masses of america to turn on and tune in: boobs and lasers and explody spacebourne objects.
the sad thing is that you can tell that some of the actors really tried hard to make the show better by acting better only to finally give up. poor john billingsly. theonly good actor on the show, and he has such a small presence.
let us not forget poor Mayweather (as it seems the writers have). why is he there? just to fill space? why would they cast a regular actor if they're never going to give him any meaningful involvment in but a few episodes?
if you ask me (which you didn't, but whatever), this show has only ber-maga and the writers to blame. the fans tried and tried to save it, but they were the only onse being ignored. HA! that's what u get.
has anyone considered how digital media artists (particularly 3D artists) are going to benefit from this? xml and xaml are easy enough to learn scripting languages. software developers would no longer have to consider the front-end... leave that to us DM ppl whose job is to create the pretty and interactive. developers create the programs, and everyone. could be happy... (here come the flames again...)
or do s/w developers actually enjoy making the front-end?
dude, i watched the video-- i can script, ya know, and this sh*t looks like a very simple tool to script 3d front-ends in/onto normal apps. as a digital media person, this is something i could do, and it would also place my 3d skills in higher demand. perhaps this isn't all bad...
look, i admit that i am not a s/w developer-- i actually work in digital media. long story short, i installed this (all of it), and didn't notice anything different. did i just install a whole new set of programming tools expecting some eye candy, or is there something i'm missing?

sorry, this shouldn't have been posted at this level of the thread, but on a comment below it. sorry! if a mod could just delete it...
calling america what it is isn't hateful, it's truthful. you confuse it because it hurts. the truth, like hateful speech, also hurts.
so if you don't like the truth, encite/enact some social change yourself. that IS the point of this country, isn't it?
seriously, "fixed numerous css bugs". pardon me while i laugh until i shit my pants.

sheesh, hash but true. i guess i expected more from apple. coming to find out that youre right: they're more like everyone else.
too bad

hehehe, yeah-- one of the few successful attacks on US soil... but no good. they just moved into a swamp and built a bigger one.
