Are you sure they even can read and understand what is said here? The amount of homework they get just seems to be so big since they are too busy with gameboy and nintendo and xbox and online games.
I think some discipline has to be taken into account and the amount of homework should allow the students to still have an active freetime with friends. Why play games if you sit behind your books as well?
pffff.....when are they going to stop with that crap, I getting tired of hearing about adventures from space. Rather see a rerun of Alfred Hitchcocks 'The Lodger' At least this is based on a true story although it doesn't reflect the truth of that story.
In the beginning of my career, mid 90's I was at my job one of the major innovators for the environment, and reading this, I probably still am at my current one;-)
At the beginning of my career I only the option between unix and mac. We had a live production system running on mac which was developped using 4th dimension (the database) and a unix environment running cobol apps.
I loved the graphical environment on the mac and the options you could use. The built in tv-in and -out converter gave us excellent opportunities to broadcast stats throughout the company.
I still get homesick thinking of it.
Even if NT used to support the ppc. You should remember that this processor has evolved during that time, even this ppc is completely different, it even has been custom designed so the original port they had for the nt kernel is not good enough and I don't think MS has done a hack and slash job on that kernel to just make it fit.
IBM sticks with what it is best at. And the saying if you can not beat them join them applies very well here.
With the powerpc division and cell processor hitting it off again, they generate a lot of revenue to maybe go for the personal desktops again and take out intel completely.
First stripped down a win2000 OS and then completely rewrite that code to support the powerpc platform, that is to say, a custom designed powerpc. I think they just completely rewrote the OS with no roots anywhere at all.
They don't need to use older code or os's now, they have had sufficient experience with the old xbox, where they had to start off with old code, even if it is stripped down to reduce development time for the product. But meanwhile like microsoft always worked, they start with crap until it generates sufficient revenue and start over with the next version that comes around. I don't think they are going about it like they used to using old code and putting it in a new jacket.
It didn't start in the US.
Anyway they need to broaden their horizon and since everybody is moving to places were economic growth is the highest and where they can start earning money again it would be the most plausible move.
There is some truth that they will save money with moving headcount to India. But the main savings will not be from the cost of employees but in the taxation on the employees work. The low educated people are very well protected in most european countries, which are payed by the higher class of incomes. Although this might seem more expensive for big corporations like IBM they do have to take into account that this does generate extra revenue for them as well whereas the lower incomes and lower educated people in India do NOT contribute to the revenue of these corporations. There is no welfare for these people in those countries, they do not receive any government social income for the time they are unemployed or can not find a job. This also is part of why they save so much money on taxations. They do provide basic healthcare for these people but you can not compare that to the healthcare we have. At this point the infrastructure in those country is lacking any means to even collect taxes from the workforce so they do tend not to pay any either and this means they don't need to be payed more, but we will see changes in a further future when the indian government will start taxing everything with VAT. By that time, we will have become a developing country again with no resources, little well educated people and depending 99% on help from outside our continents.
In Europe we are seeing similar trends were pay rises are not higher than inflation, even at some parts in europe peoples wages have been dropping by 0.5 to 1%.
But after the dot com burst, the wages in IT have dropped by about 6 - 8% and are dropping about 0.5% a year in Europe.
Jobs where high skills are needed are the only jobs where salaries have increased but if you compare the jobdescriptions of the people for those positions, you will immediately see that it covers 2 positions for 1 person.
Healthcare is provided by the government in India.
Only the poor can not benifit from it as well as the rest.
If they want the best healthcare they have to go to private clinics and such which they pay for themselves. But there it is even only a fraction what it does cost in the US or Europe.
If you take into account the lower taxes they pay, and most of them don't even pay taxes, they have no VAT, yet, on their products, no heating costs in winter, crappy transportation infrastructure so no need to drive around all the time with your car from one place to another, Every product available only costing a tenth of our products, it is easy to work for only 5$. If we didn't have to spend most of our income on taxes and overpriced products we would also work for a lot less.
It depends on the job description if they do not want someone with 10 years of experience that expect to be paid according to their experience.
No brain jobs do not require any engineers and well educated people.

just pulled open a bottle of Jupiler.....to celebrate my very first 'first post' to an article.....yeahhhhhhhhh *ducks*
at this moment the flood of addons is really mind numbing, Do we really need more crap?
pffff.....when are they going to stop with that crap, I getting tired of hearing about adventures from space. Rather see a rerun of Alfred Hitchcocks 'The Lodger' At least this is based on a true story although it doesn't reflect the truth of that story.
And only 1% of extraterrestrial life thinks there is intelligent life in the US :-D

As system administrator I have such collegues with such force, and the force in them is still growing
And combine it with the nutty professor
That caused a ripple in the force......
To the point where voyager I passed the termination shock.....
I wouldn't mind a star wars with a lot less of the original characters, lets say none of them.
Then why are they joining the competitor who is pushing linux even harder?
We just can wait and see what will happen next.

Sounds like the 10k people at IBM aren't the only one that have reached the termination shock.
Finally Thought they would never reach that final frontier. Now stop making star trek rip offs.
I passed my termination shock last year january, although painfull I managed to survive. Or is that another kind of termination shock?
