I'm less interested in whether or not it's actually a Laser weapon, or just a laser leading a projectile, than I am the stance the author takes on how to respond to China using the defense weapon.
From the article,
If China has conducted an ASAT test, this is extremely bad. I had been hoping that the Bush Administration would push for a ban on anti-satellite testing, either in the form of a code of conduct. The Bush folks, however, have been fond of saying that wasn't necessary, because "there is no arms race in space."
Well, we have one now, instigated by an incredibly short-sighted Chinese government. (I suspect this test will have also created a massive debris problem).
The United States and other space-faring states should demarche the Chinese government for what is a stupid, clumsy and short-sighted decision.
Although this idiotic move by the Chinese government will demonstrate why we don't want hit-to-kill ASAT testing in orbit--that will be a long-term recognition. In the short-term, the Chinese will simply not be credible partners in efforts to keep space peaceful. Moreover, other countries could follow suit with their own anti-satellite programs, including the United States.
This is a very disappointing day. I trust the Chinese with space weapons, a lot more than I trust Americans.
Theres a lot of talk about unconventional weapons lately, what's all the buzz about?
a very generous gesture indeed to donate that money...
but if Al Quaeda donated that money, how would you see it then?
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day... Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
The analogy can go a long way.
Management at some companies are afraid of senior programmers and senior staff. They would rather hire on a junior programmer just out of university and pay him cheap, get him well trained, and have them as their future senior programmer if they so desired.
I think senior programmers could do freelance work however. Companies that don't have steady streams of jobs comming in get worried about having senior staff full time, and having them doing nothing.
I'd think experienced programmers could have a lot of success doing freelance work though.
There should be a very publicy known website that shows which hardware is Linux compatiable, has Linux drivers, etc.
It doesn't matter how much better the OS is over Windows, it's like Linux is Steven Hawkings and Windows is Shaq... Sure Steve is smart and all, but he just can't get a 2 pointer...
What causes me to ALWAYS go back to windows? Games and shitty hardware support for Linux. I would pay the extra money to get a supported hardware, cause I could save money in the long run.
Right now, no Linux OS can measure up to Windows. It's only business going to Linux, not at home users. Mac is going to soak up the people frustrated with windows, because OsX has Unix, and has games, and everything else...
Linux has the business world convinced, now it's time for the hardware vendors. Get a publicy run site that points out what hardware to get for consumers, that could get something goin...
I'm glad Jon did what he did. He could have been trying to sell his books, but the points he made are not often made in the media.
But your right about people getting what they want in regards to entertainment. Nobody has really demands the media Jon talks about, and so Cross-fire is the way it is because thats what the people want.
Aside from some money that he could possibly make, his message was very positive. And sure, America could be far "better" than other countries because of the media content, but regardless, America is still in for some trouble you can admit, and I think everyone should agree with Jon that you should be VERY critical about politics...
this is my first post, hello all./. is great!
I think that some users actually enjoy downloading the updates. Sure , MS has new vunerabilities every week it seems, but thats become a standard now, and I think that MS could use it to their advantage.
You think the scene with MS could be worse? Hell yes... MS could have all their customers lives constantly put on halt, except on fridays when MS releases an update that will only last for 1 day before another hole is found...
Here is the way it actually is...
If you get the majority of MS users to download a patch for some security hole, that never affected them in the first place, then they feel cared for and protected.
The rate at which MS releases patches, vs the rate at which people's lives grind to a halt because of the holes, is in favour of releasing.
And just food for thought, some marketing strategies done during heavy war times, are products that 'enhance' your life, make it more 'efficient', and protect you. So maybe while you consume updates you 'battle ready your PC'!

interesting... someone should keep track of how many bugs are in Firefox on non-updated win machines vs updated ones.
