This USB device is extremely accurate and is easily configured. Put the sensor inside your PC to monitor internal temperatures or outside your PC to monitor ambient temperatures. Put it in a waterproof plastic bag and stick it in your fish tank to monitor water temperature!
Pros:
USB
Easy to setup
tons of integration options
powerful and accurate
simple = reliable
I'd give it 5 stars except for a wishlist for future hardware/software updates:
Ability to automatically clean up old log files
Option to write HTML pages instead of XML pages
More compact hardware (although at 3"x1" it's still pretty small)
Oh, and it requires that you have Internet access turned on.
Here's a direct link to one of the user/submitter experiments Annalee Newitz mentions in her article: http://www.schechtertech.com/weblog/PermaLink,guid ,869c9bf1-c0fd-4bb0-8d78-16085ece041f.aspx.
It was performed by Harry Schechter for a USB temperature sensor product: http://www.temperaturealert.com/ .

Doesn't the camera add 10 pounds?
That's 1070 lbs! I hope they planned for that...
