"AppleInsider has said and MacNN revealed that at over the weekend Apple purchased the rights to the MP3 Codec from Frauenhofer, the creators of the format..."
Purchasing the rights, and licensing are two different things. Apple now OWNS mp3 technology. They didn't license it. And judging by your snide response, I'm not sure I'm the one who needs to get a grip.
Nonetheless, outcasts will be persist always and must suffer for their differences. And the idea that people choose to be different or are 'free thinking' etc. is also silly.
Why should someone suffer because they are different? It is people like you who are helping to contribute to the thought that to be 'normal' you have to be like everyone else.
And the idea that people choose to be different or are 'free thinking' etc. is also silly.
Why? It's silly for someone to form their own opinion and not be a Yes-man for the popular crowd?
You say that in the future, our offspring being comfortable with computers will be normal. And while that may be true, what about the people who WON'T be comfortable around computers. Will they be outcasts? Sure. Does that make them "silly" or does that mean that they should "suffer" because they are different? I think you need to re-evaluate your thinking.
There's a difference. Frauenhofer are the original DEVELOPERS of the mp3 codec. For a corporation (like Apple) to come and just buy it outright isn't the same as spending time and effort to develop it.
It's about time someone on the Media side decided to say something about this. I, for one, think this is ABSOLUTELY a step in the right direction for the HACKER communuty. While I don't think this one article will have an immediate effect, similar articles like this one will help tremendously.
I'm not sure I like this idea. I don't like the thought of having mp3s play out of Quicktime. Hell, I'm not even fond of the idea of mp3 being 'owned' by a company like Apple. Granted, the new Windows Media Player (Tries to) play mp3, and it decodes HORRIBLY, and this gives Apple an edge.....but I'm not sure I want Apple to have that edge. Mp3 is the type of thing that shouldn't belong to a corporation, be it Apple or Microsoft (Thank GOD Microsoft didn't get it.) or anything of the sort.
I agree with all of what is being said. I don't feel like re-writing my First reply to the John Katz story, so I'll keep this one short. The internet, Doom/Quake, and the Movie industry are NOT to blame. It's all based on the person's household, and their environment, be it at school, or at home. School is a hostile place these days, and it's only getting worse.
This was an excellent post, and it hits home with me.
I was not popular in school. Most of my teachers didn't care if I was harassed in class, and very few did anything about it. (Though there were 3 teachers that come to mind that Really understood me, and cared enough to take action, sometimes when I wouldn't.) I was known as the punching bag of my class, be it verbal or physical...sometimes both. My talent in technology, my love for computers, and my somewhat different physical appearence (I'm much shorter than most people) all helped establish me as an outcast in school. Time after time I'd find myself in the Asst. Principal's office for getting into a fight, or some other 'routine' issue I seemed to have. I didn't make very good grades in school, and it wasn't because I couldn't do the work, but I was lazy. Middle School and High School bored me. (Hell, even my college classes are getting old.) I think the main reason I did so poorly in school, was the fact that I didn't want to be there, for whatever reason, be it academic or socially. There were days I would absolutely dread going to class, because there were others in that room that felt it necessary to torment me day after day.
The stereotypical view places this type of problem exclusive to High School. However it starts long before that. My estimate, based in on my own experience, is that it starts somewhere around late 4th grade. The adults of my time would say "Kids can be cruel." The fact is, as time passes, the kids in school are getting much worse. Days would go by where I'd come home from school literally in tears, because from the bus trip to school, during the day, and the bus ride home, I was bombarded with crap from other people.
Let me state right now, that I do NOTcondone what these kids did, and for them to have taken that step, there had to be some mental issues at work. However, because of my own experiences in school, I can understand what kind of a view these kids took toward school. As an example, I was passing by my old Middle School while walking one day, and there was a group of PE kids playing basketball. One of the kids got hit with the ball, and quite clearly, shouted "YOU MOTHER F**KING SON OF A BITCH!" Not being deaf to this language, I was still shocked to be hearing this from a Middle-Schooler.
Stop blaming the Internet, Stop blaming Games like Quake, or Doom, and Stop blaming the entertainment industry. These are not the factors that are shaping kids into killers. For one, it is obviously a sort of mental problem that these kids had. Thankfully, the majority of people like me are able to deal with these kinds of things without totally going over the edge like this, but there are some people that aren't equipped to deal with it. These are the types of people that need to be helped. This is not accomplished by rounding up all the 'unpopular' people and getting rid of them, either. And as I said earlier, kids in schools are getting worse every year.
Another factor seems to be the parents of these kids. A bomb on the dresser for God's Sake!! WAKE UP PEOPLE! Take more responsibility for what your kids are doing, and stop looking for a scapegoat when something goes wrong.
The screenshots look great, and I'm thrilled that Q3 will be Shrink-Wrapped for Linux. My only gripe is the Game's Design. From all of what I have read, this is a Multiplayer-Exclusive game. How much will this cost? (i.e.: I don't want to pay $59.95 for a game that ONLY does multiplayer.) Are the developers/distributers taking this into consideration when deciding on pricing?
Nevertheless, I'm still going to download this thing anyway. I've always wanted to study the possibilities of other life in the universe. (Plus, it runs under Linux. YAY!!@%#)
Good Point. I DID mean to say ALL of their hardware. As for your DVD problem, the DVD FS interpreter isn't completed yet on Linux, so DVD apps wouldn't be useful just yet.
"Cosm [is a set of] protocols designed to allow really large-scale distributed computing over the Internet," said Beberg, who will run the project. "Basically, the goal is to get distributed computing big."
Anyone have any tech details on this? This could quite possibly lead to larger scale rendering farms, and even Beowulf apps via the Internet. Don't know if conventional net connections could handle it just yet though.
Distributed.net is doing something similar to the SETI@home project. SETI@home implements a Screensaver on computers connected to the net, and when the computer is idle, the screensaver uses the processing power of the computer to crunch numbers, and look for signals from possible extra-terrestrial life. It's supposed to launch this Month. (I signed up back in November. heh) The point to my madness, is that whatever this new protocol may consist of, SETI might get use out of it.
SETI@home is available for UNIX platforms RIGHT NOW! (Windows and Mac users have to wait.:)
Being a pioneer in the Computer Audio industry, having Creative Labs backing Linux would be a tremendous step forward. Hopefully, they'll decide to release developer information for existing/future audio hardware.
The FreeBSD operating system is a powerful, completely open-source system based on the Berkeley Software Distribution of UNIX. It is available free of charge from numerous Internet websites and also on CD-ROM from Walnut Creek CDROM, and includes thousands of ported applications including 3-D graphics rendering and many other equally powerful tools. FreeBSD is optimized for use on the Intel x86 processor line that is the heart of today's versatile commodity personal computers. Infinitely customizable, FreeBSD is at the heart of such Internet powerhouse applications as Yahoo! and U.S. West because is unencumbered by commercial license restrictions and can be copied and modified freely.
Is it my imagination, or does this 'article' seem to be more akin to advertising?
Does anyone else think that all this Star Wars Hype is just getting old? No offense to you Star Wars fans out there, but I've seen the first movie one time, and I have no desire to see any of the rest of them. Granted, the special effects were phenomenal for it's time, but the movie just doesn't appeal to me. I have a feeling I'm gonna get burned from the flames now.
I'm a bit disappointed in the mention Slackware got. I'm a devoted Slackware user, and It's the best distribution (IMO). They could have given it a little more mention other then the passing sentence or two it was given.
They should take Bill's money and name the building "The Linus Torvalds Computer Science Center." I would say that would be the funniest thing that could possibly happen.
The film must run in the largest auditorium in the complex and cannot move to a smaller room for the minimum length of the run without permission from Fox;
HA! That's the "I have to be bigger than everyone else" complex. Pretty funny.
......don't think that just because you saw it on Slashdot, you're allowed to come to the talk.
Damn, how about being a bit more personable! I mean jeez, he's acting like the meeting is gonna be flooded with people. (Although if it was a public meeting, it would most likely have the physical equivilant of the slashdot effect.) But it was made clear the FIRST time that this was not public. The writer didn't have to reiterate that fact so damn rudely.
Any artists that alllows their music to be recorded and traded and then argues against the format in which it is traded is a fool.
It's not the band that is upset at the trading, it's the Legal department REPRESENTING the band. Since they have a contract, the Legal department has the final word.
Who says you have to download the music that you like? Nobody is stopping you from encoding your own mp3's from CDs you already own. That way, you can listen to your music, and still enjoy the benefits of mp3.
Seriously though, of course the execs are going to be against distributing recordings. They're not making their money, so it's not acceptable. To hell with what the band supports, and to hell with what the consumer wants. If the corporate monkeys don't get their money, it's gonna be a problem. That rule applies to almost anything out there in corporate America.
