It seems pretty interesting that all of these companies are so quick to share how much their "losses" amount to. Personally, I think they're a bit overstated. While I don't think what Mitnick did was pretty smart, but just as major corporations usually do, they're going to try to squeeze some cash out of this situation. Granted, they're not going to get all of what they want out of Mitnick, but they are certainly going to try.
From the Nokia Letter: A rough estimate of the development costs of stolen software and tools, including testing is US$ 7.5 Million. ....[and] a further US $120 Million in lost revenue due to new developments being delayed in reaching the market.
From the Novell Letter: the cost associated with the development of the source code is well in excess of $75,000,000.
From the Fujitsu Letter: Software development expenses... $1,100,000.00 Research & development expenses.. 1,000,000.00 Total... $2,100,000.00
You are not going to convince me that because some software tools and development models were copied, that it is going to cost Nokia 7.5 Million dollars. And you are DEFINITELY not going to make me believe that Nokia lost $120 Million in lost revenue because of "new developments being delayed." PISH. Nokia makes a ton of cash, as does Novell and Fujitsu.
P.S.: Yes, someone who loads a 640x480 pic to display resized in a page as 160x120 IS an idiot.
Not the point that was raised, as you well know. It is desirable to have the editor figure out the image size for you, because then you don't have to pull the image up in another tool to check it yourself.
To hell with that idea! I can't stand sitting and waiting for a RESIZED picture to load, when the moron of a designer stuffs a 1024x768 picture into a 320x240 Space. If you want a picture to display as 320x240, Scale the damn thing down to 320x240 in a Graphics Editor!!
God almighty. Let's say you want a specific green. You're saying you'd rather find it by trial and error with hex triplets than pick from a palette or move a few sliders? Liar.
No, I'm NOT a liar. If I'm coding raw HTML code, and I come across something where I need a green, I'll figure it out in hex. Besides, if you were a Web Designer, you would KNOW not to use a "specific green" because not everyone has the same configuration as you do, and that "Specific Green" will not display properly on all screens.
What you are pointing out is that if I want full access to the capability of a language (Yes, HTML is a language) I should use a specialized editor. That's like saying I should program apps in VB rather than C.
No, it's not like saying that at all. I can't even begin to express how far off the mark you are with that comparison.
No argument on that one, because I was RIGHT on the mark.
Anything you can do in an editor, you can write the code for.
Yeah, but do you want to spend the time doing a chore that can be automated easily?
If it means that I can manage, update, and modify my web pages with much less time and effort, you're DAMN sure I'll want to spend the time to do it, and do it right.
And if you write the code in HTML, it comes out EXACTLY the way you want it, and not Macromedia's or Allaire's idea of how it SHOULD be.
Who cares how the HTML comes out?
Who cares? WEB DESIGNERS care! If there is a bug somewhere in the code, or if you want to add a tiny modification to a page, who the hell wants to sift through unreadable HTML code that some editor slapped together?
Damn dude, Chill out. Personally, I use pico. But this person wanted a Windows program, and notepad happened to be the obvious way to go. My point was to use the bare HTML, and not an editor.
First of all, your statement about OSS programmers not caring about usability is the PERFECT example of a non-founded answer, and I'll let other people tear it apart.
Secondly, What you are pointing out is that if I want full access to the capability of a language (Yes, HTML is a language) I should use a specialized editor. That's like saying I should program apps in VB rather than C. That's ridiculous. Anything you can do in an editor, you can write the code for. And if you write the code in HTML, it comes out EXACTLY the way you want it, and not Macromedia's or Allaire's idea of how it SHOULD be.
P.S.: Yes, someone who loads a 640x480 pic to display resized in a page as 160x120 IS an idiot. And #RRGGBB isn't that tough to figure out either.
I suppose it is possible. I wasn't aware of the RIO's capability of working on 1 AAA battery, so I will be man enough to admit I was wrong. hehehe. (From what I understood, mp3 decoding took a lot of processing power, and required at LEAST a pentium. It doesn't seem logical that 2 AAA batteries would support it, but alas I was incorrect.)
BERKELEY, California--Linux has been successful because it's the product of programmers looking for entertainment and society rather than money, Linux founder Linus Torvalds said today.
'nuff said. If the project was motivated by the Mighty Buck, it would never have gotten to where it is today. Linus started developing Linux because he didn't want to pay the insane prices for a UNIX system.
Sure, It's gonna cost more.....for those of you who actually BUY Microsoft products. The 'Microsoft Rift' won't tide over the Open Source community, so guess what? This doesn't affect me.
One COULD argue that the rift would hit Computer manufacturers, and it would drive up hardware prices, so that COULD be an issue. Microsoft can simply say "Oh no, we need to pay for this mess. Let's charge each OEM an extra $50 for each package. No use hoping, this is probably going to be one of the effects.
They're finally moving in the right direction. This is good, to see a leader in the industry hit the Linux community like this. It may kickstart a domino effect to force other companies to do the same. Let's hope so.
DE MORY: Okay. So we won't use [the word 'browser'] today.... Do you have a word that you use for the graphical user code used for rendering images from the Web? Is there some short term that we could use to refer to that?

A) Something positive for hackers to get a hold of, and actually get attention for their exploits, and even get them fixed!
B) Positive feedback from the developer of the software, and appriciation.
C) A final product that would be far superior in security from DoS then if it had been released without this testing.
Definitely makes everyone happy.
