Not really... Including these free tools would be ok, or even good, if they were open-source. But now, MS is just killing these two competitors and that will not be good for improvement of the platform.

If I install Vmware with a linux host and a windows guest, can I have Skype 2.0 running on it, accessing my mic and my webcam? (I know I should use Ekiga instead, but...)

And would my wireless pcmcia card, that is not recognised by linux, be working under this artificial windows? Can I use the usual windows drivers with the guest vmware windows?

Cour de cassation is like court of appeal. That's where you go when you want to appeal from a previous decision. I would not call it the highest court. There are several of them, in major cities. And the highest court, similar to the Supreme court, is the Conseil Constitutionnel, ie Constitutional council.

  4. Cocorico ! on Legal Victory for P2P in France · · Score: 2, Informative

I think this decision is fair. You guys have to be aware that french people pay a special tax when they buy blank CDs. Where does it go? Into the SACEM's (~RIAA) pockets. So anyone buying CD-R/CD-RW is already paying for the right to make copies. And if you use the CD-R to make a backup of your documents (yes, I know, who does that?), you basically paid the tax for nothing. So let's download citoyens !
I think also the distinction between private and public is in the money. If you download for your personal use, and do not make money out of it, you're good. But if you burn the downloaded music and sell the CD, you're evil! Actually, making money and being evil are very strongly connected in France. Darn capitalists!

What about that? I just heard on NPR that one of the founder of the Digital Universe project is also involved in some extraterrestrial intelligence believer group... I didn't quite get the details unfortunately. Does anyone have more details. It could affect the credibility of this project, couldn't it?

Actually, there is this java program Mercury that allows video chat and that is compatible with MSN messenger clients. Pretty neat, it works on Linux and Windows.

What hackers like, among other things, is the challenge. Crashing or discovering bugs in IE is probably fun, and a lot of people get screwed. But since Firefox is open-source, when you find a security breach, it's probably as fast to fix as using it. And there will be recognition from the programming community. If you find a bug in IE, what can you do? Send an email to bill.gates@hotmail.com?

  9. Re:What do they have to lose? on XGI, VIA Release Open Source Drivers · · Score: 1

Drivers are good. But could they also release software to deal with the card's features? Some GUI to activate the TV output or something... With my Nvidia, it's a pain to do that. You have to go to XF86Config-4 manually...

  10. Car CPU Crash in France on Will Your Next Car Run Windows? · · Score: 1

Apparently, there were several drivers who experienced problems with their Cruise Control. Some guys had their speed locked at 200 km/h and could not slow down, the brakes were not operational and the could not turn off the Cruise Control. After a while, everything went back to normal, and nobody was injured. The carmaker (Renault) claims this is not possible and inquiries are in progress. Nevertheless, it makes me wonder if Electronics are reliable enough to replace Mechanics...
