  1. Their digital knowledge sucks on The Presidential Portrait Goes Digital · · Score: 1

The JPG on the official page has the Adobe RGB color profile embedded in it. Most browsers don't pay attention to this and assume sRGB, which is why people are generally told to convert to sRGB before uploading to the web. If you look at this side by side in Firefox 2 and Safari on a Mac, you'll see the difference. It's huge.

I have a power logo on my back. Well, technically it's a "standby" logo. This shot has a lot of blood in it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/thechrisproject/2717988863/

I'd like to see you point out the part of the Flickr TOS that states that they can freely re-appropriate your content for their own uses.

Flickr is generally very good about copyright issues. You can retain full copyright, or apply Creative Commons licenses to your photos. This was not a Flickr problem, it is a problem with the people that ripped her off and sold prints of her photos. If she had her images on a site that she had complete control over, this would still be a problem.

Using Google, Yahoo, etc should not and does not mean that you lose all control over your content.

  4. I'm suprised they waited this long on Photoshop Online Within Six Months · · Score: 1

Adobe Graphics Server has been around and hasn't done much. Other sites have had basic online image editing available for a while. I'm glad Adobe is finally getting in gear. I'm a serious Photoshop user, but this has some exciting implications in a lot of non-serious-user areas.

There are already companies that you can outsource certain parts of a Photoshop workflow to, like creating clipping paths:

  6. Re:Now if only thier feeds weren't crippled on Google Upgrades Blogger · · Score: 1

I'm talking about the fact that blogger doesn't allow external linking of their images, even from feed reading sites like Bloglines.com. The atom.xml of my examples does have images in it, as you have pointed out. However, when using a browser based feedreader, like bloglines, the images will only show up if you already have visited the blog and have them cached. I can show you the headers if you really don't believe me, but I've written to Blogger and their reply was this: I understand that Blogger hosted images are not appearing on other webpages. This is happening because the images are hosted on our server, which does not allow external linking. Our servers are maintained this way in order to prevent bandwidth theft. We apologize for the inconvenience. Sincerely, Karl The Blogger Team

  7. Now if only thier feeds weren't crippled on Google Upgrades Blogger · · Score: 1

I read a few people's blogger/blogspot blogs (including John Kricfalusi of Ren & Stimpy fame, The Online Photographer and others), and there's something that really bugs me about their feeds: the images don't show up. In an effort to save bandwidth, Blogger has prevented all external linking, including from Bloglines. For a blog about photography or animation, this makes the feeds next to useless. The thing that gets me is that this is actually costing them more bandwidth, since I'm downloading the feed and then going to the page to see the images anyway. Blogger: if you're going to allow full-text feeds, allow images too. Picasa web galleries allow hot-linking, Google video allows embedding... but blogger won't allow images in feeds?

  8. Snobs everywhere on Linux Snobs, The Real Barriers to Entry · · Score: 1

This reminds me of my time spent trying to learn Cubase, an audio sequencing program. This was a few years ago and there was definitely an attitude of RTFM there. In addition to that, the snobs would also occasionally pull out the "you're using a hacked version" card. I had someone tell me that once, something along the lines of, "I'm sick of supporting people like you using hacked versions." I sent him a picture of me and my paid-for version of the program, but still couldn't elicit an apology out of him.

What I've found is actually helpful for noobs is this: if you're going to tell them to RTFM, at least tell them where in the FM to look. Something like "page 78" or "the chapter on whatever" can really be helpful sometimes.

Oh dear Jesus, please teach people to use the damn apostrophe correctly. "random and limited number of subscriber's TiVo as of this weekend" When you pluralize "subscriber" there is no need for an apostrophe. In fact, it's wrong. Stop it!

  11. Export Processing Zones on HP, Dell, and IBM Agree to Manufacturing Code of Conduct · · Score: 1

"companies must comply with minimum-wage laws; and overtime and benefits policies must be in accordance with the law where the factories are located." Okay, that's well and great, but many/most of these factories are located in export processing zones where the laws are way more lax than the countries in which they are located. It sounds like another hollow attempt to appease people with consciences. Great marketing ploy!
