  1. Re:What about slashdot? on Are Media Writers Biased Towards Apple? · · Score: -1

"Really quite useless, but here it is just because it has "Apple" in the title."

Or maybe because /. posts pretty much every Dvorak article?

  2. Re:MS does have things that are worth the money on How To (Really) Share A Simple Calendar? · · Score: -1

The text of the question states that that asker is a) The owner of the business, and b) looking to work with only three calendars. I would hardly think that you would need to run an Exchange server to do that. Since it is a small company, they'd probably not want to spend a lot of money on Outlook either.

I would almost think that the best solution is to use Sunbird with the actual calendar files stored on a shared and public (to the company) file server. That way there's no messing with WebDAV servers or anything, although there may be problems with simultaneous access and such.

  3. Re:WildTangent on 360 Live Arcade Details Out · · Score: -1

Sure, but some could argue that spy/ad-ware doesn't affect the functionality of your PC (much). It just tracks everything you do. Of course, MS can do this already I'm pretty sure with Xbox Live, so maybe all a company like WT has to do is tap into the things that MS is already recording.

  4. Re:Brilliant header! on Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 DoS Exploit · · Score: -1

Is it? The article says "1.0.7 downward". Does that include 1.0.7 or not? Also, what exactly does this exploit do, anyway? Someone can use a DoS attack on my PC when it's using Firefox to shut down the connection? Or someone can hack any Firefox browser remotely to DDoS attack some site?

Specific quote from the article: "Although many of the images of the death ray depict Archimedes with a parabolic mirror, it seemed like a bunch of individual flat mirrors positioned by 'the troops' would be a fast, more practical implementation of the concept."

  6. Re:Glass? on Archimedes Death Ray · · Score: -1

It was a mirror. Glass is an old-timey term for a mirror. I didn't see the Mythbusters show on it, but I assume they used mirrors, as did the MIT folks.

I'm not sure, but a lens would probably produce better results if the sun was directly behind it because it would focus on a single point, whereas these mirror had a pretty big reflected area. Of course, it would have to be a mondo big lens, or a whole bunch of them.

  7. Re:20 gigs? on J. Allard Responds to Hard Drive Criticism · · Score: -1

The reason for the pricing is so MS can make lots of money on everything but the system. The only thing they take a loss on is the main system. Memory cards, hard drives, controllers, etc. are all marked up 200% or more for pure profit. That's why MS isn't including one standard in the cheap system in the first place- it's better if you can make the consumer buy as many peripherals as possible.

  8. Maybe for now on The GBA's Last Stand · · Score: -1

Nintendo still has the DS, so if you consider that a "Gameboy," then they'll still be around for some time. Just because it's not called a Gameboy doesn't mean Nintendo's influence on the portable market is any smaller than ever. The PSP certainly has a beautiful screen, but the games really haven't been very good so far, and the DS is doing very well.

Tim Rogers is probably the worst offender on the verbal diarrhea list I know of. And he's not even that interesting in the first place.

  10. Re:As far as I can see... on Microsoft Finalizes Its Desktop Search Software · · Score: -1

Google Desktop Search does all those things- you just need to install an add-in to tell GDS that those are text files. There's one that's called Larry's Any Text File Indexer that lets you specify what file extensions to index as text. You can find it here. I use it to index my LaTex files (I installed a separate one for C++ file indexing).

  11. Re:Why, snails could move faster ... on Update on Project Prometheus · · Score: -1

Part of the problem for some of this technology is that the development time is very long. The Prometheus ion thruster will probably have to run for over 20,000 hours. To get a good idea of the erosion on the thruster (the life limiter), they need to run in a vacuum tank for quite some time- probably at least 8,000 hours in this case. Of course, simulations can predict life to some extent (that's actually what I do), but NASA doesn't rely on it. The NEXT ion engine is what I've been working on for the last three-four years, since it's inception. They've done a 2,000 hour wear test and are getting ready for a longer one. All this before it ever gets put on a spacecraft, because you don't want the thing failing halfway through a mission. Even though NEXIS and HiPEP (the two possible Prometheus ion engines) are under development right now, I don't expect they'll be ready before 2010.

  12. Re:ign.com and apparent Quicktime plugins on Firefox 1.0 Released · · Score: -1

It sounds like you need to re-install your plug-ins. I think flash and shockwave need to be updated when you upgrade. The Quicktime plug-in shouldn't need it, unless you were having these problems before. The ad problem is probably due to out of date flash or shockwave. Either way, if you install Adblock and block those banners, it won't be a problem! I've never had a problem with IGN in any Firefox iteration, except for the fact that the page flashes like crazy when I load it. I think that has to do with a certain page setup.

  13. Sadly... on Nuclear Rockets Moving Along · · Score: -1, Troll

I think that Bush being in office for another four years would do wonders for nuclear propulsion of all kinds. RTGs, nuclear reactors on electric propulsion, and thermal nuclear rockets have all made a come-back in the last four years, when before nuclear was a taboo word. Now NASA is all about nuclear, and several missions are being planned which use it as the primary power source. Unfortunately, I really want to see Bush get kicked out of office, so it's a bit of a problem. I don't know what Kerry would do about the nuclear stuff.
