  1. White eye-pod goggles, anyone? on The Future of the iPod · · Score: 1

goggles will be see through, and the user interface will be braille coded.

You are probably right, but I drive an old (fast) hatchback which has automatic mud smearing built-in (on those rainy days).. Anyway, if the rest of the car is dirty too, I would probably get away with it. Instead I could get a ticket for being a public eyesore, using such a filthy conveyance :)

  4. $30M? Cheap at the price.. on Movie Studios Unveil New Anti-Piracy Lab · · Score: 1

Studios churning out lousy movies (remakes, tie-ins, sequels, whatever) nobody will see -or want to remember seeing-. Throwing another 30 down the drain is piffle. A good anti-piracy effort would be to create a good, high quality technology which is also affordable. That way a lot less people would want to spend the effort to get hold of bootlegs. That, and making fewer and better movies. The way I see it, the celebrities, the producers etc make way too much anyway.

Smearing some mud, partially obscuring the license plate will do that just fine. Better yet, for total authenticity, you can refrain from washing your car, like me..

  6. Re:Back on Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 Released · · Score: 1

I do have both Opera and Firefox, and use them alternatively, though Opera is my main browser. I only resort to Firefox for the adblock (the way opera handles blocking is awkward). Opera is faster and appears to safer (according to security experts, one of which I am not), the notes, the save/remember session ability, the zoom facility, the mail client has me sold. Even though Firefox can be extended to have many abilities Opera has built-in, they occasionally do conflict and responds sluggishly, and I do have a fast computer with loads of memory. IMHO the back and forward b uttons should behave like flipping to check a page in a book. There is always a reload button if I need it.

(Oh, and Opera does even remember what I filled into forms when I go back).

  7. Re:Getting work done on The End of PalmOS? · · Score: 1

I agree. I do have desktop and a laptop computers, with real keyboards and large displays and mice and wacom tablet wireless etc. I also carry around a Palm T|T which is more than enough for PIM, some e-books, e-mail (through BT), and some games for occasional time wasting. It is all I need. A lot of /. contributers may need to develop web servers on their PDAs, but still many people don't. I have used the brick called Zaurus. Linux is a lovely platform, but way too much cruft and legacy for a speedy, easy to use PDA experience. We speak of shoehorning Window$ into handhelds, but to some extent Linux is also being shoehorned into the same. Many more keypresses and more time to jot down the same phone number or small memo. If I need some software for anything, it is available somewhere, a lot of it free (a nice small fast timecode calculator for example, as I do 3d graphics and occasional compositing). The new mobile OSes are going the same way M$ Office. Bigger Better More Features etc, when all I really need is some text editing and formatting now and then. It is all about simplicity, ease of use and fast response.

  8. Do we need another driving sim or another FPS on WoW Helping or Hurting the Industry? · · Score: 1

If it's a good game, people will continue to play it, no matter what. Xxx the game "industry". My opinion is, there are way too many basically indistinguishable games, as there are way too many Hollywood "blockbuster"s going around. Either get a genre and do it right this time, or invent something new. Making games or movies have become too industrialized now. They are no longer labors of love. They are simply laborious repetitions.

  11. Skirt away on Game Creation and Careers · · Score: 1

Not having read this book (but having some acquaintance with similar ones) I can say this: - Most of the game projects get shot down prior to launch. Each success story masks at least fifty valiant efforts, now lying in a ditch somewhere. - Actual game makers (not publishers) do not earn enough to compensate for the burnout. - The 10 Gazillion Dollar Game Industry needs new and young and enthusiastic blood to go on. Nobody else in his right mind would work, if they knew the deal (with very very few exceptions). Go figure. Another recruitment manual. Join the army, meet interesting people, and kill them. Return, spend your pension on shrinks.

  13. A difference that makes no difference.. on Bush Website Blocked Outside N. America · · Score: 1

Is no difference. What US does is everybody's concern, due to economics and US foreign policy and even internal policy. I am a Turkish citizen, and US has its fingers in so many pies here like everywhere else, that makes it also our concern. And no, I do not think much will change whether Bush or Kerry gets elected. The so called "old boy network" will continue to exist, with it the arms companies, the oil companies and various other powerful lobbies, whose interests really get to decide which way US government jumps. Bush is well disliked around here, but at least he is good material for -some really very funny- political satire. It's like having choice but between only two brands: coke or pepsi. No wonder US voters are apathetic and don't show up at the ballot.
