People, guns are not the way to hold on to your rights.
Not too sure about the timing of this - tech markets are not exactly well regarded in the city right now, following the tech stock meltdown earlier this year.
Mind you, Turbo Linux _do_ have a product, an established user base, and a lot of the good things investors look for.
Don't expect a Red Hat like surge on this one.

Individual RPM's are RH version specific, so I can't get the latest & greatest Samba. Am I being dense here (most likely) or is RH trying to take me for another 70 UKP for the 7.0 CD? I'm truly interested, not dissing RH - but I thought the upgrade treadmill was what OSS is supposed to avoid... Someone hit me with a cluestick!:)
I agree with you, see here but thanks for the lecture on pron - read my post; there's a couple of points you missed.
I've no idea why it got pegged to "flamebait" but reliable moderation isn't a/. strong point right now...
Village I described... Was my home village in Berkshire about 15 years ago. Didn't lock any doors in my folks' house, fields and trees, next door neighbours who were friendly and considerate... I miss those days, and I think they are long gone in what we laughingly call "civilised" society...
Yeah, I'm not knocking Google over this, though. They still need to get some cash together to maintain their service, and as services go, Google is pretty good.
Maybe I've been reading too much Iain Banks recently; I look forward to being able to say "free as in bandwidth and CPU time"...
Face it, corporate interests are vandalising the internet as we knew it, kind of like turning a sleepy village in South West England where people look after each other, don't need to lock their doors and play cricket together on Sundays into an inner city slum, manifest with crack whores, guns and drugs. Still, on the plus side, it's better than terminal only access over 3200 baud...
The last sentence says it all... "Otherwise we won't be able to find anything on the web"
I know the gags about all web searchs returning at least one pr0n link, and they are exaggerated to a certain extent. There is some truth in it, though.
But the lack of honesty on the internet appalls me. As an old schooler (I remember gopher, before this new fangled www thingy), I'm used to being
able to find things quickly, and only find things that are relevant.
With the proliferation of personal home pages, unscrupulous company webpages exporting lying meta tags, I'm disappointed in the web as it has turned out.
Pr0n sites are they best and worst thing on the internet. Best, not for the reasons you'd think, but because the pr0n sites drove the need for high quality image and moving picture compression, and provided the need for higher bandwidth availability. But now, they are ruining our internet, along with the spammers. That said, AllTheWeb does an excellent job at stopping "adult" links being returned from a search, and it's bastard quick, too.
Why not _force_ all pr0n sites to have a.xxx TLD? Easily spotted by search engines, web filters and all. So all of us who can handle the internet in it's glorious tangle can find what we want, and avoid what we don't. And segregate other sites into more stringent TLD's - like.tec for tech sites,.sel for ecommerce,.hmr for funny sites etc etc etc. Everyone benefits that has a legitimate site, effectively killing these ad-laden dross sites that popup 10,000 more windows when you try and close them. The only problem is policing this effectively - maybe have an optional membership to a regulatory agency, which allows you to publish a "certified" tag, which can be a criterion for web search engines. The only problem again, is how this agency supports itself financially.
What do you guys think?
I _really_ don't think we need YATE!!!
I could spark a holy war here by asying all you need is vi, but I like the diversity out there.
Nope, where OSS fails is where no programmer has an itch to scratch. The only way around this is when forward looking business approaches OSS programmers and pays them to write the code.
Can any/.'ers think of anything that needs writing, but nobody wants to?
Mhhm.
Every modern country has debt. And all of those contributing to the international space station are included.
It's a fact of modern life, and nations have sophisticated methods of dealing with that. I'm not happy about it either, but that's the way it is.
But do you want to tell your children that you paid off your national debt, or that your country contributed to one of the most wondrous anomanalies in the sky? That you bargained, negotiated, created, innovated and had the balls to put together something that defies natural law, and provides scientific value to the entire human race? And how that process brought you to a deeper understanding of different cultures, the benefits of which will underwrite your childrens future?
Go on then. I think this is a fantastic common ground for nations to get together and do something.
So, is this a non-story, or are TW _really_ up to no good? Because if this is true, it smacks of strongarming ISPs into becoming part of the AOL/TW collective.
Surely, if all the ISPs unite, and nobody caves in, this can garner suffient momentum to attract FTC attention?
Kinda reminds me of the mess over here in the UK, where BT are twisting and turning like a twisty turny thingy, as they are forced to give up their monopoly on the local loop...
I've had cable TV for 3 years, and _still_ won't get a cable modem until late November. And I wouldn't call Central London out in the sticks, either...

Thanks for the advice.
I will try and get a life, one that is better than the one I have and like, although I may have to search a for a long time for it to get any better than I've already got it.
Define 'life' for me. Go on, have a gooood think about it.
I'd classify it in the relationships I have, the things I do that make me happy, and the things I do that make others happy. Sometimes the inexpressible joy at smelling a crisp spring morning, or the feeling of being alive and warm when a winter storm is blustering against your window. And no,/. is nothing compared to all that. But if/. is "just a weblog" why are you concerned about the quality of my life?
Todays twin 1st posts were a fluke. I got a lucky fp when I first checked out/. today, then as I returned to the main screen, I got another. You must ask yourself why I did that, having posted sensibly (well, mostly, anyway...:) on/. previously
I think you're misinterpreting the gist of my posting here; my ultimate happiness and quality of life aren't really affected by what goes on with/. . But when you see something that was good lose it's former glory, do _you_ stand by and watch it die?
Taco is not just a guy like you and me. He's under pressure from his position of wealth and celebrity (Wired, the Register, Salon and NTK all link to/. from time to time), he's been in Time magazine, and Taco and/. are becoming a recognised media source. I'm not knocking him in any way, and if it sounds like that, then I apologise. But at the end of the day, he is responsible for/., and it seems to me the volume of posts is dropping, there are fewer posts reaching +5 Insightful/Interesting, and that is not a good thing; in case you had forgotten,/. relies on banner ads for revenue. Lose what draws people here, and Andover will drop the site if it is not paying its' way. And nobody will blame Andover for that.
I'm halfway tempted to return your personal comments to you, "get a life yourself etc", thinking you're a troll, but I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here and I've got more important things to do right now.
That'll be my quality of life kicking in, then.
And how many articles and TV news stories have you seen on dangerous "hackers," online predators, Net addicts?
And how many on "dotcompreneurs" who are growing filthy rich? Go on, count the times you've seen Bezos and his ilk gassing on TV about the e-information age...
As far as the violence goes, it is perception that counts. And that is something Katz has conveniently skipped in this ill though out piece of flamebait.
There is a saying "no news is good news". Ever wonder where that came from? Originally, in the formative days of the BBC, if there were no disasters or bad news to convey, all that would be broadcast would be "there is no news today".
But in this day and age of more and more saturated TV coverage, enabled by our better communications and logistics, could you imagine CNBC or the BBC broadcasting that?
When was the last time you saw a news programme where there were solely "good" events happening, instead of the quirky 20 second slot on some news shows? And why is that? Because it doesn't make for good viewing figures, and that is what the news agencies depend on for funding.
I have given up watching the news, reading papers for this exact purpose. My current affairs knowledge is now minimal, but I am happier. Because can I really make [insert tragedy here] not have happened? Can I un-drown all those people lost at sea off Greece? (I only know this because the guy who sits next to me at work is Greek, BTW)
And those that Katz derides as Luddites (BTW, Sherwood Forest is _in_ Nottinghamshire), maybe they're looking at the 80+ hour week pressure cookers some of us high tech workers are in... And want something different. However, they don;t seem to understand that we can walk away from these furnaces at any time. The Luddites were still in a feudal system; the Lord of the land basically owned you, you did his bidding. And that is why the Luddites didn't want the tech.
People ask me if I can just write a program to go in and automatically digitize the location of single atom defects.
So, there _is_ something you can't do in Perl, then?:)
Oh, yes you do.
Tech companies are _dying_ to maximise their profits by dropping all your salaries, using this bill... All arguments aside, I believe that H1B workers are entitled to 90% of industry standard rates. I accept there may be notable abuses / compliance to this, but the more people there are earning only 90% of the going rate, that's going to drop the average...
I'm in the UK, and the UK Government is trying to do the same, offering "fast track" work visas for tech workers... Tony Blair PM (an anagram of Tory Plan B - Tories are "the opposition") wants E-Britain, yet his government has yet to demonstrate an understanding of what is actually required (remember RIP?), failed (and expensive) efforts to update the passport office's computing systems, lack of accessibility of government resources on the net...
These lapdog politicians will be well out of the way when the any social problems 15 years down the road come to bite the present government, problems caused by a nation trying to absorb too many of another nationalities citizens too quickly.
Don't get me wrong, I think that mixing up our gene pool even more by migrant workers is a Good Thing, I just think it's being done too quickly, and for the wrong reasons.
That said, I've worked with Indian, Russian and Austrian workers, and they were all shit hot!
OK, I'm not doing down this discovery, or the scientists who researched it.
But a step closer to nanites? Come on!!!
Nobody seems to have a clear idea of what a nanite is, yet there are always claims after a discovery like this - "Nanites tomorrow!!!"
I would define a nanite as:
Having some sort of applicable intelligence, either as a function of what it is made of, or an AI in the truest sense of the meaning
Capable of acting individually or collectively.
Very, very small
Capable of receiving instructions, or acting autonomously.
I don't see how duplicating an existing chemical reaction in an organic compound could possibly bring us anywhere nearer to "nanites".
And yes, I know that being able to modify individual molecules is handy when creating tiny, tiny things, but you must remember carbon has some special properties which may be assisting here (c.f. electron clouds on benzene rings), and those properties may not be found in compounds suitable for nanites. This is just an organic compound, ferchrissakes!!!
A closer take on this would be "it's a step closer to being able to make the materials for nanites", and that, IMHO, is an important distinction. It's a bit like saying the discovery of silicon is a major step to making a Cray...
If the record companies had been a bit more on the ball, MP3 would never have gotten the mindshare it has now. If a reasonably secure method of audio file distribution could be had, and was pushed by
all the record companies, we wouldn't be seeing the legal action we are now.
Yes, you _can_ rip any audio - it's just the difficulty in doing so which determines it's ease of use. Ripping an MP3 is a doddle, anyone can do it.
Wiring a feedback loop isn't something your average AOL'er is likely to do... They'd rather pay the record company to let them d/l the music than mess about with wires and "tech stuff". Which means that the amount of illegal music out there is driven underground and the impact on revenue is lessened.
The record companies _really_ screwed up when they failed to halt the MP3 boat, and now it's too late - hence the litigation frenzy that is currently going on. They should have put together something that was reasonably secure, and used their muscle with manufacturers to only support their format, not MP3.
Kinda like what MS did to get IE a mindshare. I'm not agreeing with this course of action, just saying what I would have expected them to do if they had their eyes open instead of their heads in the sand...
AFAIK, the athletes themselves are sponsored by their nationss / corporate interests, so that's that taken care of.
People pay at the stadium, which rakes off a prfit from that, as well as drinks/food/tshirts etc... Besides which, the local economy is given a massive boost, the host country gets a whole load of foreign currency...
So, is the IOC a non profit, or what? Any conspiracists out there with an answer?
There are 3 main problems with WAP, as I see it:
1) The connection speed is way too slow and flaky. A friend of me has tried to get a WAP portal going, Talkfolio, apparently your web experience is greatly limited by bandwidth - kind of like watching TV in black and white.
2) Acceptance - very few major websites out there have a "WAP Option"
3) WAP devices _suck_. It's like trying to look at the internet through a keyhole. What the killer appliance IMHO in this instance is a gameboy, palmpilot and mobile phone all rolled into one. That way you get a decent screen, your connection, and pluggability so you can put a folding keyboard on it, or use graffiti. The lack of a mouse device and keyboards on WAP phones just cripples the device. Cool toy, but I can already receive and send email on my mobile easily. If you want me to have mobile web, it's got to be easy to use.
I think people are expecting too much from WAP at the minute; it's been overhyped and people are expecting a full on internet experience, which it just isn't.
Yeah, I've had contracts like that, as well - only from software houses, though.
I can't see what right my employer has on _my_ code, written in _my_ free time, with _my_ compilers that _I_ bought (well, downloaded GCC, anyway...)
