With Vista you plug in the pen and it asks you if you wish to use it as Memory, with Linux and other OSes that the same ability built it you have to perform time consuming tasks to get the job done.
Take a look at USB Pens and how much they cost. You can get a cheap 4gig pen for under $50 (CAD) and a Kingston 4gig pen for about $100. This price has gone down dramatically (from about 400 bucks a year ago).
Keep in mind that USB drive does not have to be empty, it will just work around the data on it.
His point wasnt that MS Office is slower then Open Office (Anyone who has tried them both cannot make that argument), his point was that if your system is too slow to run OO then it's rarely outdated by todays standards.
I personally don't like using OO, but I do install it on friends computers (prevents them from illegal software, especially considering they only need basic word processing functionality). Out of the 10-15 times I have installed OO I have noticed it is pretty slow.
However, the opposite is true: The iPhone, despite its many media-oriented virtues and its sweet design, will do far less than most existing smart phones. The problem Apple now faces because of Jobs' premature detail-oriented announcement is that of dashed expectations. When customers expect more and don't get it, they become dissatisfied.
What doesn't iPhone do? Unlike most smart phones, the iPhone doesn't have voice dialing, voice memos, 3G Internet access, Word or Excel support, one-handed operation or video recording. It can't be used as a laptop modem. The battery can't be replaced. It doesn't support removable storage. The calendar, task list and e-mail won't sync with Microsoft Outlook.
When I first started reading about the IPhone I didnt think it was very special, so I watched the keynote speach, which changed my mind. Now after a few weeks of going articles and peoples posts on boards such as this I have come up with the conclusion that it will sell well with young people, however it will be a big disapointment with the business community.
The following points concern me.
1. Depending on what they do with Battery life / replacement
2. Lack of 3rd part applications
3. Lack of Outlook support. Outlook is the most used comminications application in the business world, it is not a good idea to simply ignore it.
When Apple decided to reinvent the phone they forgot to add some features some of us consider default behaviour. I do still like the plain jain phone features, they are a big improvement over other phones, however its simply becaause of the large UI, most of the features simply cannot be done on the currently phone style...
So apply simply re-invented how a phone looks.. And hopefully did a good job with the Patent...lol
Every OEM sends their recovery CDs rather then a Windows installation CD. HP (at least their business line of products) sends a recovery CD and a Windows Installation CD. The Windows CD is bootable and does not contain any OEM data or programs (I use them on a regular basis). As for the home line of HP products, they may come with different restore CDs.
Trying to perform a restore with a Dell is next to impossible. If you do not do it Dells way, you will have to find another Windows CD because Dell combines a lot of crap with it.
IBM just sends the restore CDs on the harddrive, so you are screwed if the drive goes. Tech support has no problems sending you the CDs when requested though, but I still find it a pain in the ass.
I would never purchase a non-business notebook again. I have seen so many issues with the home computer products, especially notebooks.
Be happy it wasnt a Dell, you would have had to reformat your machine everytime something happened:)
Personally I think IBM has the best notebooks on the market (although I own a HP), their T series books are great and never seem to have hardware issues.
Ive noticed you never actually reply to a post with anything valid, just pointless insults.
I live in Ontario and am not homophobic, I just stated that the only people who ever ask about Macs also like dick. I look foward to receiving your pointless reply, provided your mother didnt revoke your Internet privileges
I do not watch Fox news (or any American news for that matter)I am a Canadian, we do not enjoy watching violence on the news.
If you must know, I am a system integrator, which means I have to deal with Windows boxes on a daily basis. Of course I could start pushing MAC sales, but my job is to solve business problems not make picture albums....
Of course I understand a MAC can function in a business enviroment, although they have limits... but tell that to the CEO's I deal with who are bombarded with the MAC vs PC commercials.
In fact the only times any of our clients inquire about a MAC is when their daughter or gay son (this has happened 3 times now... I am not picking on fags) is going away to school...
which brings me back to my orginal point. Apple cannot market their products effectively. They have been in the industry for over 30 years and have only made 2 outstanding products. A computer 25 years ago and a music player (not really the company I look too when I have to solve a business need).
conclusion: People who like Dick, like MACs...
None of the Mac users I know have any desire to communicate with the types of people who tend to be PC users, let alone corporate PC users with this thing they call a "messaging platform." Not the real Mac users, anyway.
All Hail the elite MAC users!
Seems like the IPhone is similar to the IPod.
The IPod is not really the 'best' MP3 player in the industry, it is popular because it is a fad. Its the 'cool' MP3 player to buy.
With the high price tag I am not really sure who Apple is marketing the IPhone towards. Its too expensive for masses of young people to purchase, it doesnt offer anything that Windows Mobile or Palm offers for Business users (in fact is offers less). I guess we will have to wait for its release and commericals, mind you Apple has never been good at marketing its products, with the exception of the Ipod of course.
It will not be any different then with Windows XP, ME or 9x. Take a look at any HOME brand computer that gets sold by an OEM, especially Gateway and Dell computers. They are covered in total crap software that the only 10% of users actually use.
The taxpayers have to be more assertive in demanding FLOSS in schools. The taxpayers should demand that Windows be kicked out of schools just as they would demand drug dealers be kicked off school grounds. Most curricula have not specified Windows and many curricula suggest more use of IT in classrooms, so there is continuing pressure on budgets. My school has a cluster of terminals in every classroom. Schools with Windows rarely can afford that.
That is the stupidest thing I have every read. You think its a good idea to train our future business force on the Operating System that IS NOT used in the majority of businesses... You would be suprised how little knowledge most students have once they complete grade 12, why would you want to reduce this??? Do some research and see how Microsoft can benifit a School, they offer some great programs.
With programs like http://www.faronics.com/ DeepFreeze, maintenance in any OS used in a school is left to Installing new applications or Hardware replacement.
Prompting for admin passwords for the normal home user is the same has not prompting. People will just punch in the password when prompted without a care as to what is requesting it.
Also, 0% of software can be installed as non-admin? That's some hyperbole there. Learn to use Active Directory and deploy software under the group policy stuff. Limited users can install software just fine via that.
Apparently I did miss the point. It seems to me that your original statement implies that if you "learn to use Active Directory" and "deploy software under the group policy stuff" then "limited users can install software just fine via that."
If you see the post he was initially replying to it may make more sense.
This is a perfect example why Mechanics should be Mechanic and the IT Staff should be the IT Staff.
Your poor experience with a program was more to do with the crappy design of the program and your lack of knowledge of the software you use, then with the Framework itself.
C# was designed and built to program against the.NET Framework, which is probably the strongest reasons why C# is such a strong language.
The facts are:
1. The.NET Framework makes it simple to jump from Web Development, Small App Development, Windows Development, Database development.
2..NET Framework is created and strongly supported by the largest software development company in the World.
3. The documentation for.NET is by far the best in the industry.
By your statements you seem to have limited use with Windows. A few points I would like to make.
1. Their are plenty of programs that do not require Administrator accounts to install. This is up to the Program Devs to write proper code. Unfortunately Windows made it easy to write crappy programs, Apple did this before also, but they could EASILY change their code base because they do not have thosands of businesses and thosands of programs relying on their OS.
2. You said you let the 'Kids' install their own applications on the computers, well that is just asking for trouble. Their are plenty of hardware or software solutions on the market designed for your enviroment that will wipe out any changes after a reboot. The fact that you don't use such a solution says alot about your 'experience'. You have to understand that Windows has about 100 times more programs available, and most of them will cause issues once installed.
3. 'When it all comes down to it, the amount of software available isn't truly what's important'>/i> Sure it is very important. Windows has more and better programs built for it then the MAC, which is one of the reasons why Windows has such a large share of the markett.
Learn how to properly admin a Windows network, then try to justify your statements.
By the end of the year Windows Vista will be on more computers then OS X. OS X may be better on a 1 on 1 camparison but the IT industry favours Windows, thus it will come out on top.
Ubuntu hard to install?, its no harder then Windows... simply keep clicking next using the defaults. Actually Ive never changed settings on any OS (Linux or WIndows) install except when I am making image installs or scritped installs.
Actually I have to change the date for Windows XP installs, it keeps thinking I am in the Pacific Time zone for some reasons, cant remember off the top of my head if the Linux install gave me the correct time zone by default.
Try zipping up a Windows install from the first IDE harddrive on one computer and unzipping it onto the second drive of another and getting it working again
This only works if the program installation makes it possible, its not Windows that restricts this.
When you do a new Windows install, how many reboots and driver installs are nessisary
For Windows 2000 1 reboot after its done copying the installation files, I think XP is the same.... Why does this matter?
an you automate software installs, or do you need to click "next" a bunch of times?Yes, if the installer uses 'Windows Installer' or 'Install Sheild', which is probably 99% of programs for WIndows, its possible to automate this using scripts. By you asking this question, its obvious you have not had to maintain a Windows network and dont know how Windows works.
Can you run a network where the users don't have admin rights,
You are correct, users have to run with Admin rights, however these are Admin rights on the 'Local' machine, not the network, there is a huge difference there. Its very possible to write programs that do not require Admin rights, however Windows doesnt make it simple and its human nature to take the easy way out (faster ship dates / More money / Less bugs).
or do you constantly need to make exceptions for badly written programs?
Ive seen many bad programs made for other Operating Systems, its the programs that are bad, not the OS... Sorry, but I have no clue what point your trying to make with that comment.
This is the same with anything in Technology. If you buy cheap, you get cheap performance.
With Vista you plug in the pen and it asks you if you wish to use it as Memory, with Linux and other OSes that the same ability built it you have to perform time consuming tasks to get the job done.

Spoken like a true idiot with nothing to prove.
