If these files are opened - really opened, Microsoft will have to compete on the basis of quality, price and by innovation.
Well...
1. Price: MS can lower their price, or make special deal packages with their other CALs, however price isnt really a factor right now, perhaps in 5-7 years. Half of my clients still use Office 2000, the only reason to upgrade too 2003 is Outlook 2003, which is a much improved Email client. So if you think about a upgrade of every 3-5 years, its not all that costly, especially with if the company has already invested in Software Insurance.
2. innovation: Well no contest there, OO doesnt even compare to Office for features, especially on the team collaboration side.
3. Quality:Well OO is riddled with bugs and is slow. For some reason it takes forever to open an attachment from my Outlook. Drove me insane, but I dealt with it.. up until I tried to open 3 documents at once... it took like 20-30 seconds for them to open... That is way to long.
You are also forgetting that MS Office is already part of a lot of different software packages, in fact about 30% of my client HAVE to use MS Office because other software solutions require it. That is pretty much a lockin for these companies.
Id like to leave you with the following two things to consider:
1. I can see Office dropping a bit of the lead, but I doupt OO will take much of it, its just not good enough.
2. Office is more than just a Word processor. I would imagine Excel and Outlook are the reason people use MS Office, Word would probably be a really minor reason.
For a game company to want to support Linux they would have to think of (at least) the following:
1. The dozens of Distros out there... Big hit against Linux
2. Hardware support, if Hardware OEMs dont make/support their own drivers how the hell can you make/support a game on the platform?
The market share of Linux on the home desktop is so tiny that its not even worth the LARGE effort it would require to get the game to market. The only people who think Linux is able to do everything Windows does are the people who use Linux on a daily basis, unfortunately for you thats a very very small percentage of people:)
You mean to say that I can save $40 next time I purchase a new HP and I will be hit with Advertisements... No Thanks, I would rather spend the additional 40-50 bucks to have the normal Windows.
Is it just me or is it people that hate MS mainly post on Microsoft Topics?
This is a very nice product, and Microsoft has proven once again why they dominate all the Offices around the world, but for some reason half the posts on this board are bashing this new product?
If OO came out with a version even comparable to Office 12 I am certain the posts would mainly be praise about how good it looked.
Myself I cant wait to try it, for a few months I was using OO, but then one day I tried to open 3 documents at once...Now I renamed my Office Writer shortcut to 'Export to PDF'.. mainly cause thats all its good for. Once Office 12 is released I can finally uninstall OO:)
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/academia/ Take a look at the Microsoft AA program, its a small price to pay for the school to provide a wealth of software for the students
Usually these companies have Software Assurance anyways, so they already have the licenses for XP Machines when they get new computers now, and will have all the Vista licenses when it comes out. The actual cost for Windows on a OEM machine is not even mentioning.
Well if the differences in Office 12 require Vista to have all the new UI things then YES. The new features in Office 12 will mean a huge increase in productivity.
Try to browse the INternet with a Windows 95 machine, I think IE 5.0 is the highest that can be installed on it. I dont know about you, but I have many clients that require IE 6 for work related websites.
IE 7 beta
37k without OWA 2003, just slashdot
44k With OWA + slashdot tab
Even considering IE 7 is in beta 1, it takes little to no memeory compared to a normal site. Considering 516RAM isusually the default for new machines, its peanuts. Now a Java applet... well Java is slow even on fast machines, not bad once it gets going, but the load time is slow.
It wasnt broken till it was already released, you speak as though MS knew of the vulnerabilities and shipped anyways.
Look at the security changes from Win95 to Windows XP, do you not notice how it has gotten better, but vulnerabilities are always found, could it be the fact that the majority of the users of this OS have little to no Computer knowledge?
Like the parent, I have never had issues with Spyware/virues/worms..etc. But then again I know what I shouldnt do on the Internet.
How the hell did he get modded up for that useless post? Insightful?, he just said the same thing that 25% of the other users post anytime Microsoft is in the story title.
I dont think any 1 company will come out on top, its just too big. Look how big Google is right now, but yahoo is still racking in the bucks, and msn isnt doing too bad either (I would expect msn to come out with a lot of new things in the next few years, especially with Vista on the horizon)
There is lots of room on the Internet for a few big dogs, I suspect Google.com, yahoo.com and msn.com will be the clear leaders in the future.
All 3 companies can make billions anually, is this not worth the effort? Google may be the leader now, but in the wold of IT, leaders can fall fairly easily, very few companies can hold on to it.
Also let us not forget that it would be GREAT for MS to make a serious push into this section of the market, it would mean that google/yahoo would have to inovate and increase their game!.... We all win, just like the browser wars... The best browser came out on top and we got Firefox:)
Often times if you go to the hardware manufacture site, they 'may' have a driver only download. YOu are correct more often then not the drivers are huge downloads, but only because of crap software you will eventually disable anyways...lol
By all means Microsoft should give us a real limited user account and force the software vendors to honor the model
http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/security/ Well they did, but forcing software vendors to complie with it is a bit much. Microsoft is really good to developers and help them with as much information as they can give... THey know that they heavily depend on software packages for Windows to continue its success. If you look around you will find information you need, you can start here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/about/
should find and plug security holes and exploits in IE and in all the services that you are running out of the box that they can.
http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,2180,177 6290,00.asp They are doing this, but as you can tell from looking at the security issues of other browsers (non of which even match the amount of users IE has) security in browsers is a hard one to beat. Because there is money to be made in Spyware/Adware, people will always find ways to 'sneak' in.
I predict even after MS forces people to run as non-admins, fix/improve security in IE, include an outgoing/ingoing firewall, and include an Anti-Virus and Spyware clients, people will still find way to get spyware/adware into the computer.
This isnt a rant against you (Just didnt like the two quotes I added to my reply), but to a lot of people who complain about MS security. If anyone doesnt think MS is trying to make computing more secure I'd like to know how they can do more.
People dont seem to understand the difference between MS and other server/desktop OSes
IE integrates with Windows nicely and cannot simply be 'switched'. Any user has the ability to install additional browsers and make them the default (Being the default means that browser will open Webpages for the user. IF the user wants the browser to open further pages he/she can associate the file extensions within Windows itself.
Until other browsers can match the functionality (for more then just webpages), there is no point in completely removing it, many people require the activeX functionality.
No clue, but it does ensure that all relavant data for my on the road coworkers are the same for the in office ones which is all our business needs.
A product can either provide needed functionality to a company or not provide it, SQL Server products (MSDE, SQL Server, SQL Server CE) provide a lot of needed functionality, just look at their market share.
Clearly, this (as well as news of Oracle's "free/lite" version of 10g), are good news... that Open Source projects like MySQL, PHP....
MS HAS ALWAYS OFFERED A FREE DATABASE ENGINE, its no secret. SQl Server 2005 Express is just the new version of this product which has been available for years. Because of its easy transition to Sql Server its used a lot as a started Database for companies trying to sell in the SBM market. A lot of software application make use of MSDE (which is what the engine was called before Express edition)
Now as for the Express editions being free... They are not (someone let me know if I am wrong here). They cost like 40 bucks or so, I had the beta installed on my system, once beta was over it prompted me to register/pay for it within 30 days..etc the usual MS registration.
The reinstallation process isnt all that difficult on OEM computers, usually the recovery CDs dont leave any room for error or for data recovery for that matter.
Well...

Then why even post under MS threads? You obviously are interested in what MS is doing otherwise you wouldnt be reading about it
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/academia/ Take a look at the Microsoft AA program, its a small price to pay for the school to provide a wealth of software for the students
S makes its money off of CALs for Servers/Office.
You just showed your own ignorance... I said the changes in the UI (User Interface). Take a look at the changes then rethink your posts.
Well if the differences in Office 12 require Vista to have all the new UI things then YES. The new features in Office 12 will mean a huge increase in productivity.

And the Troll MOD was appropriate for your comments
A good product for public places like schools/libraries...etc
If you actualy wanted to use such a product I guess it is possible (although probably annoying) to use it on a personal computer (idealy for kids).
When I tested this out for a client (public library) I browsed around and obtained several viruses/spyware variants, rebooted and all was fine :)

Replication between Sql Server 2000 and Sql Sever CE works fine. Its very nice to have a Mobile Database that can sync with an Enterprise database.
