  1. Yes, but.. on 3 Million in Xbox 2 Sales At Christmas? · · Score: 0

..can it run Doom 3? /obligatory

  2. Flare... on Half-Life 2 - Lost Coast Details · · Score: 1

Just please say it won't have the bloom effect that we seem to see in every screenshot nowadays... it's okay once in a while, but playing a video game where every frame looks like a capture from "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" can get annoying.

  3. The Guide Wasn't Much... on Run Two 30" Apple Cinema Displays on a PC · · Score: 1

I'll admit, I only clicked on it to see the pictures of the dual 30" displays. Is it as beautiful as I expected? I think it was, only moreso. Now if only I could afford the cost (or the desk space).

  4. Re:Like space elevators? You'll love... on Space Elevator Update · · Score: 1

Sounds like an interesting idea actually; biology produces strong carbon compounds every day. The only problem is that a "grown" space elevator wouldn't be able to support its own weight before it gets to the height where centripetal force and gravity balance out. So it would have to be grown in space, and lowered down to Earth afterwards. Actually, a biological space elevator would produce other problems - how do you keep it from growing taller? What happens when it dies? How do you actually go up and down it? Maybe what we need is a big spider in space that makes a big cable of spider web. Speaking of books that refer to space elevators, I highly recommend Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson.

And in other news, Google is taken over by the US Military; renamed Skynet... Robots are cool and all; and I certainly prefer if robots instead of humans are placed in harm's way, but this can only end badly. Either that, or wars will become some sort of farce, where robots go and battle each other without any human casualties at all. Better deactivate that learning chip though; else the robots will realize that it's pointless to fight each other and all become hippies.

  6. Cool! on Touching Molecules With Your Bare Hands · · Score: 5, Interesting

Tactile interaction with molecules is the first step towards understanding them well enough to create working nanotech. Right now all we have are descriptions and equations, and it's a lot harder to work from a statement like "the force between these two atoms is such-and-such Newtons" than it is to actually feel the force (appropriately scaled up, of course)

  7. Precursor to the Grid? on Linux Distro turns PCs into Night-time Clusters · · Score: 5, Interesting

I remember hearing about how in the future, we would be able to plug in to the internet and not only access information but also spare processing power. It would be really handy; most of the time you are only using a fraction of the power of your computer (for example, my usage is hovering at around 8%, and I have a movie playing as well as several other applications running), but when you need more processing power, you could get it on demand. Of course, the lag would make it too slow for video games and such, but for some computationally-intensive stuff (video editing, ray-tracing, etc.) it would be perfect.

  8. Interesting Concept on Dance Dance Revolution Exercise Study · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's too bad though, that kids have to be enticed with video games in order to become active. Just go outside! It's like a video game, except with better graphics (and when you die, you really die).

  9. Re:Neat idea, but... on Wikipedia Planning a DVD Version · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well, wikipedia now is free. If I'm spending money on an encyclopedia, I'd rather it be factual. If it's free, though, I don't mind the occassional error.

  10. Re:Endless fork? on Easy, Fast, Cheap Way to Generate CPU Load? · · Score: 1

I've been using int main() { while(1); } to stop the Dev-C++ run window from closing as soon as the execution is done - it seems to eat up 100% of my processing power, but dammit, I want to be able to see the results! The only thing it seems to mess up is if I'm listening to music at the time.

  11. Neat idea, but... on Wikipedia Planning a DVD Version · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think it's a good idea to have wikipedia available in other formats than just online, but isn't the whole point of it that anyone can come and edit the articles to make them more correct? You couldn't do that with a DVD version. And unless someone is going to go through every article before putting it on a disc, you'd run the risk of buying an encyclopedia with some things blatantly wrong. I could envision pranksters trying to sneak in false information just before the DVD release...

  12. Human Intelligence? on NNSA Supercomputer Breaks Computing Record · · Score: 2, Interesting

Isn't the human brain supposed to be equivalent to a supercomputer running at about ~100 teraflops? And if so, shouldn't this computer be smarter than us?
