They are not making a program not work. They are blocking KNOWN to be bad programs. I.e., all programs work by default. Then, after it's KNOWN that a particular driver crashes the system, they block THAT one particular driver/version. How is that not a good thing? Would you like to see a message come up and say: "Warning, if you install this driver you WILL for certain fuck up your OS, press any key to continue." NO! of course not. I would much rather that you see: "Warning, the driver you tried to install would have DEFINATELY screwed your entire system but we've saved you from yourself. Please get an updated driver meanwhile continue to use the, obviously, working one for now".
Zone Alarm has ALREADY been updated to be XP compatible. BlackICE will be updated before the end of next week to be compatible.
This is a Good Thing(tm) for MS to do. If they KNOW that a certain driver is bad then why shouldn't they prevent you from making an obvious mistake. Why would you WANT to be able to add in a known bad driver? You actually fault MS for this? I applaud them - I say: FINALLY!!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I have ordered the VHS versions of both. I'll save my money on LD copies (which I'd prefer) for the later to be released DVD versions if Disney ever gets off it's ass and releases them.
Thanks again!

I appreciate the reply. I've already seen both in Japanese off LD years ago but have lost contact with the fellow who presented them. Our host spoke Japanese and explained it to us.
I think these two are the very best I've seen.
Just looking for a source for even the Japanese LD versions.
I have looked everywhere and perhaps I just don't know where to look properly or it's just this hard to find these videos. I would be ever greatful and indebted to anyone who can point me to where I can obtain copies of these two movies:
Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind
and
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
(see: http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/films/)
In NTSC format required. VHS or LD is fine. Bootleg DVD is fine. MPEG is fine. Subbed or in original Japanese is fine.
Can ANYONE point me to where I can buy these, price is of little concern.
Thanks in advance,
db

In my experience, it's always the fault of stupid admins who don't properly setup and patch their OS (any). But, here it is in a simple nutshell, everything you need to run a secure W2K/IIS box.
Install W2K Server.
Install Service Pack 2
Install this IIS patch: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/cri tical/q293826
OK - lets see someone "root" that box. I can positively guarentee you won't find any box with these two simple patches applied being defaced!
Is this really that hard people? W2K is secure. IIS is not nearly - but can be with a single patch (it's a rollup of all previous patches).
W2K might have been based on NT technology but is such a massive rewrite that it's unfair and inaccurate to consider it the same as the 5+ year old NT4.
Is it fair that anytime we talk about Linux 2.4 that we can chide it for any faults and ommisions present in Linux 1.0? or just any Unix you can name cause Linux is JUST another Unix... right?
A tiny 8 person company in MI decides to try to make more money off the FUD on NT (they didn't mention W2K, which they do NOT charge more for. I called, did you?) - that's hardly newsworthy except on/. where anything MS is not only fair game but headline making!
NT != W2K != XP. You completely missed the party as well as CIS class. NT4 is what this article is talking about (I actually contacted this company a few months ago, I am in MI, and knew of this crap back then). If you are using W2K he does not charge the premium. You'll notice how that little fact was convienently left out. Don't believe me? Call them yourselves, they're on-line and in the yellow pages.
Besides, it's IIS that has the biggest problems with vulnerabilities, NOT NT or W2K themselves. Ever heard of someone cracking into a NT box from within the network? Me neither. It's always some malformed HTML request taking advantage of some cool MS only feature IIS brings to the game.
NT means NT4. W2K is a new animal.

You make a common logical error in your assumptions. Just because netcraft claims there are more DOMAINS running under apache servers does not mean that MANY of them have no dymanic content whatsoever and that the majority of IIS survers do.
My field experience shows me that most apache servers run static content for huge virtual hosts with zillions of little bitty domains while IIS typically runs only a few domains or only one but they are much larger and more likely to use dynamic content. Your typical ISP runs Apache because it's the free one that came with the free OS they are running cause they have little money. And, true, it's easier to host zillions of "10 meg limit" static page websites on apache. Businesses typically are running IIS and they have a need for dynamic content and use ASP.
It's designed to prevent the slashdot effect. Unless you think it's fair that this little site should be hammered out of service until the story scrolls off the main slashdot page...
Hehehe, this guy was smart, they aren't going to get slashdotted (and no one is going to see the original message) because the page was changed with this small addition:
if (document.referrer.toLowerCase().indexOf("slashdot.org")>-1)
location.href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/";
else
....
My god, that story keeps changing and changing and the lies grow larger by the second. It was a very early copy of NT4, it was NOT the OS that failed. It NEVER BSODed at all, the database application failed.
It happened before W2K was a twinkle in Bill's eye.
I mean, I know you are afraid of how good W2K is but making this shit up THIS obviously lame is just, well... lame.
Are you kidding? You are kidding right? The GeForce 2 drivers are not only utterly rock solid but I cannot think of any game out there that won't run on the geforce! And MS wrote DirectX 8 in cooperation with NVIDIA so there is a particularly good match there. And when X-box games are released, there will be matching PC releases and NVIDIA makes the graphics chipset the X-Box uses. Getting the idea?

IE6 beta does NOT include any firewall of any kind. You probaby have proxy incorrectly set.

What more is there to say - if the hardware has it, W2K supports it.
What's even funnier is that it DOES run and everyone else has noticed but you didn't even bother to check yourself - ha!

Not yet ... but it's dropping so fast I don't think it'll make it out of 2001. Hard to keep a company going when it doesn't make any money - eh?

W2K is THE most stable OS I've ever used. Period.
Sigh... doesn't anyone spend 15 seconds on a search engine?
