I saw the trailer last night. Halle Berry is playing Storm... that is one fine woman. Too bad she remarried. Guess I'll have to give all my lovin' to Ms. Portman:)
No. The comment area should be used for personal comments. Headlines do not have to be "soulless" just because they are without slant.
And whats with the personal attack (character assassination) against Signal11. "You should be ashamed of yourself"?! I wonder how your other posts read.
That is not my train of thought. On a side, Germany was never evil. The ruling party thru WWI WWII was evil. Germany's party/ideology has changed.
It's interesting to note Hitler's party in this context. After invading Poland, the Nazi party made statements that they would never invade the Netherlands, Belgium or Scandanavia. But they did. Each time making reassurances to the others that they were safe.
A clear and consistent action was taken over and over again. It didn't necessarily mean that they wanted to over-run Europe, but the French were wise in making their defensive line despite what was stated.
I never said MS would take any action -- based on their past or otherwise. I'm just saying I take what they say with a grain of salt. A large grain. Think golf-ball sized here.
You've made some good points, especially the garbage throwing one. I'm not arguing against you. But their actions persuade me more than your points.
I think anybody has the right to be sceptical of MS (and they don't have to be Slashdot Readers either).
But, "They are doing this for that reason..." or "They will do this because...", are just arrogant statements. Nobody really knows what their intentions are. And that's the problem when you take their history into account. How many times? Yet this one will be different? Can't say for certain.
Remember the story of the frog and the scorpion? The scorpion needs to cross the river and wants to cross on the frogs back. The frog is leery but accepts anyways. Halfway across, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog asks why and points out they both will die. The scorpion responds, "Because I'm a scorpion."
p.s. Love the inference that everybody else's speculation is "gong off the deep end" yet your speculation somehow is "realistic"
Everlevel could never come to Linux and I would be happy. Materialquest might be a technical achievement, but as far as imagination goes, it plays like a skipping record. Kill rat, kill rat, [level 2], kill spider, kill spider, [level 3], kill foo, kill foo, [level 4]. Where's the friggin story line?! Quests? Quest A: kill this then bring back its carcass and I will give you that. yawn.
Neverwinternights on the other hand looks to be very interesting. One of the players is a DM who guides the others through a storyline. He can create monsters on the fly, speak through an NPC to give you clues, yada yada. Best of all, they are working on a version for Linux.
I had written out a rebuttal to your post, but you're not worth it. You would only bury your head to that too. "What was your point again?" -- how blind.
Fiscal year calculations anyone? The fiscal year rollover for my work was back in July and we had plenty of programs that did fiscal year calculations. A smaller event than the calendar rollover but it has been quite quiet hasn't it?
"His actions prove he was a saint." -vs- "His words prove he's a greedy opportunist."
I doubt that his intentions were purely altruistic (genuflects) SIC? or greedy. It was probably done in jest so don't get bent out of shape, just laugh.
I was thinking the same thing. As for the other reply about not being willing to fork $20K for a senseless patent you're right and wrong. This is McDonnel-Douglas -- the Gov. writes their check they aren't exactly hard pressed for money.
Maybe $20k is a small investment to be able to use some of the "obvious" ideas that other companies would have. Maybe this, maybe that, its hard to say exactly why they did it but these guys aren't idiots -- they did it for a reason. (and everyone agrees the obvious one is senseless)
Drawing everyones comtempt for the current system might force a rewrite that would be of better benefit.
yeah, i'm afraid my mocking wasn't clear (blunt subject line with the minimally helpful body) i was trying to demonstrate how the replier came off, poor taste from both of us.
This is a "forward looking" situation. I agree not many are going to buy one of these now, but the devices aren't going to remain static. I believe the context the article was written in was "these are the future". But when is that?
I would dare to say "anyone who would buy a cell-phone would buy one of these" (eventually is an unspoken)
A benefit to shifting work to a graphics chip rather than having the CPU perform the calculations is that the CPU is more readily available for other processes.
The frame rate cap sounds really good. Unsteady motion (going from one rate to another) is much more irritating.
As others have noted, this is showing very poor taste on the part of Loki...
Actually, its showing less than perfect judgemnet on the part of an employee who works for Loki. I doubt this was batted around and finally pushed out on behalf of the company.
Especially since the obvious intent is to ridicule this customer.
He does make fun of the inexperience of the user, and agreed it is a part of the story, but my take on the story was from the final statement. It begs the consideration of Microsoft testing Linux on desktop usability and where Linux is at.
I sure hope I never have a reason to call Loki tech support.
I do stupid things and I know people laugh at me. I hit on girls and some think I'm a fool and reject me. I'm not going to stop because someone will realize the truth that I'm not perfect.
But you're right, this wasn't professional and could've been done better.
Flesh out the GPL License! Define what beta means. Define what constitutes distributing. Maybe define a heirarchy of which points trump the others (get rid of the "article foo says...","oh yeah, well article bar says..." confusion) and finally have an ask slashdot forum, "What the hell does the GPL License say and mean?"
Sitting in a forum and arguing over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin (never resolving anything) is meaningless. What can be done really but improve the license' clarity?
I humbly ask that this could be moderated up insightful (if it even receives attetion)
At any rate, this shows that the issue of beta testing needs to be addressed clearly by the GPL license. There doesn't seem to be be any defined limit as to what constitutes a "public distribtion"... is there?
Can a company say we are going to have a massive beta program, issuing 200 million beta licenses? What is to keep company X from making their inhouse distribution and keeping it in perpetual beta outside the legal constraints of the GPL?
The follow-up question is, of course, "why would anyone do something so stupid like that?" Let's not find out.
sorry, my bad. that should have been informative.

The Sims comes out the first of Feb. Start porting it now cause it will be "the game" of 2000. Another must should be Thief: The Metal Age.

it really sucks to be you, it just comes across so clearly.

I wouldn't doubt that the trojan has a sniffing capability too -- for those who don't store their passwords.

If you don't want to help someone out then just quietly move on with your reading.

ok, i should qualify that statement a little... but i'm not going to
How loud do you suppose one of these things would be when the compressor is running? Running one as a server stuck in a closet might be fine tho.
Pathetic isn't it? Its almost an insult to our intelligence.
Considering all the spin on everything nowadays its nice to know whos giving the "factual information".

the problem with that thinking is to apply the actions and opinions of a few and accredit them to everybody.
