You have to be/have been a pilot or navigator to captain an aircraft carrier. (I wrote a paper about this in the 90s...) and the US hard-on for aircraft carriers ain't going away anytime soon.

It solves (probably poorly) the problem of police officers being shot with their own guns and kids getting shot by guns their stupid parents left accessible.
They will gather information about you on tumblr and sell ads on other sites. So this is the best route for Tumblr to become profitable without losing "street cred" (So lame that that is a business term)
Why do we tolerate this bullshit? Religion is a mental illness that requires institutionalization, so the diseased don't harm others. Only when it can be shown that individuals are not a danger to the community should they be released and placed on a public list like sex offenders (obviously there is a lot of overlap between the two)
The IRS could send out a new number after they process your tax information. Since it's only "real" long term purpose is for social security and taxes right?
