  1. But couldn't someone just make a "mod chip?" on Apple to Lock OSXi to Apple Hardware · · Score: 1

With everything going on with mod chips for playstation and PS2, couldn't something similar be made to mod any PC into looking like it were apple hardware? I don't know much about hardware and what not so I'm just throwing the question out there. It really seems like something could/would be done to get OS X running on generic PC's.

  2. With a hopefully smaller burst of the bubble on Another Dot-com Boom? · · Score: 5, Interesting

It will be interesting to see how Wall Street reacts the second time around with these tech stocks. I would hope people can look back now and wonder what they were doing, consistently buying these stocks with P/E ratios of 300 and higher. With the tech bubble of the 90's still fresh in investors' minds, I would speculate that this time it won't get quite so out of hand. The name of the game on Wall Street is earnings, and in my opinion, one of the biggest problems we had with the last tech bubble is that so many of these companies had no earnings to speak of. To make matters worse, I don't know that a lot of these companies (pets.com) had a good idea of how they would ever have earnings. Hopefully the big investors such as pension funds, insurance companies, and mutual fund managers will think twice about backing some of the more obscure companies. Perhaps I should do an understandfinance.com IPO :)

  5. Wrong. It's not hackers... on NYT Says Paperless Voting A Serious Problem · · Score: 2, Insightful

On election day, the discussion most commonly heard in the office wasn't about the candidates, the issues, or the country. The chatter was all focussed on one thing--the lines at the voting booths. People complained about waiting a full hour to get their voices heard while the others shared their similar stories. Inevitably, these conversations all led down the same road; the country needs to institute electronic voting via the Internet. The brilliant people in these conversations all agreed, correctly I might add, that this will not happen. However, they were absolutely wrong in their reason why. I don't know how many times I heard someone use the term "hacker" when citing their argument against online voting. Hackers? That is in no way the reason why we're not voting online! We're not voting online because of a percieved inequity in this country. The true reason we won't see online voting is because every voice in this country needs to be heard. In 1776, Thomas Jefferson coined the phrase, "All men are created equal" in the Declaration of Independence--maybe you've heard of it. Anyway, the fact of the matter is that we're not all created equal. Some of us have computers and some of us don't. And for this reason, all of us don't have online voting. If any group made a case for online voting, it would be the republican party. Since the wealthier people tend to vote for the republican candidates, and wealthier people tend to have computers or reasonable access to one, it all makes sense. This notion would clearly be shot down by the democrats, vying for the poorer people's vote. Democrats would argue that online voting would leave behind too many people--those without computers or those that have eight kids and can't get to the public library to vote. I don't know what my stance is on this issue to be quite honest. I'm not convinced that the poorer contingency is voting anyway. But mark my words, the democrats think (or hope) they are. Let me just point out as well that I'm not casting judgment on either the republicans or the democrats. I'm just stating the facts. Online voting will not happen because of inequality. So thank Thomas Jefferson... because of him, we're lining up at the voting booths like it's 1776.

Funny you would mention the landmarks. I used to drive from Florida to Maryland quite a bit, and once I was in Maryland, I'd take the back roads all the way to my destination. Anyhow, there was a giant weeping willow tree where I needed to turn and it was right near the road so you couldn't miss it. I had no idea what the name of the road was, and never paid attention to anything else because I could always count on the tree... until they chopped it down. To make a long story short, I added a good 2 hours onto my last trip due to the absense of that tree!

Ever map out where you're going, only to find that its nearly impossible to see any address numbers on buildings, making it harder than it should be to find your destination? I'd like to see streaming video that shows you the drive to wherever you're going. Of course, you could speed it up for the long parts, but show the turns so you know what to look out for. It seems like they could equip some delivery trucks (from other companies) with cameras, maybe strike a deal with UPS or Fedex, and then sort out the video later. Of course, it would take a lot of work, but it could start with smaller cities and work its way up. Now that's what I'd like to see...

There is definitely a synergy that is created (or should be created) when open source teams up with corporate entities and this relationship needs to be nurtured further for the most bang for the buck.
