If the feds keep taking all of the shady sites down, where in the world will we get the next Paris Hilton sex tape?
On a more serious note though, I know they keep going after the distributors but why not start going after the downloaders in big swoops as well? The media would surely hype that up and I think a lot of the casual downloaders would think twice if they knew their IP were being logged. Just my $0.02.
One of the reasons I stopped playing World of Warcraft was because even an hour or so a day wasn't enough. The problem was that there's only so much you can do in an hour, and the results seem almost insignificant. I just didn't have the time to spend even 2 hours a day playing a game, and it became really frustrating not keeping pace. What became even more frustrating was seeing people I had grouped with only a few weeks before, and they were 15 levels higher than me already. Then a few of them started alts and their alts would pass me in level! Admittedly, I'm not very good at video games, but the level of fun just dropped off and I retired WoW to the bookshelf.
I hate to be a skeptic, but this train seems pretty damn scary. The idea of going that fast on land just doesn't seem to be too safe. So while reading the article and looking for some clues to its safety, I stumble across a quote that the train "has cat ear-shaped air-brakes that pop up from the rooftops to help slow the train in an emergency." Is it just me, or in an emergency situation, wouldn't you like to have something a little more reassuring than cat ear-shaped air brakes?
I'm not very familiar with the entire process, but what keeps someone from ripping some commercial video and putting it on the system and charging others to view it? If someone from one of these rogue countries does this, it's not like there could be any legal action against them, correct?
To me it makes sense to go after the ISP's directly. I see it similar to the parents that don't properly look after their children. The children get in trouble, and then the parents get in trouble for allowing the children the freedom to get in trouble. It's a scary analogy (especially if you're an ISP) but I think if they want to subdue piracy, it's the quickest means to an end.
With that having been said, I do have to mention that I think the entire task is going to be extremely fruitless. Even if they shut down massive torrent sites or p2p networks, people will just find a new way of stealing music/videos.
That's a great point. And how easy would it be to tack on a little moderation box similar to slashdot where you could post your opinion on whether or not it was fraudulent. Then, you could limit your searches to ones where they aren't fraudulent. Of course, you'd have sellers modding down competitors items, but they could put in some sort of punishment control for that. I really haven't thought this all out, but I'm sure it is feasible and would really improve the system.
Whenever I do a search on Ebay, I always find ridiculous auctions. Just do a search for a Powermac G5 and you'll see what I mean. There are inevitably those auctions with buy it now of $29 where they claim you'll get a system for free. Of course, I look past those but it would be nice if someone could write a moderation tool that would allow you to filter your results. Perhaps with ebay opening up their systems a bit, a crafty developer could go in and make changes such as this, which would markedly improve the ebay experience.
WHat games do you usually play on Mame? I had it for a while and the only game I could find that I remembered was "Tapper." What else is good for it? I'd like to give it a second chance.
It's as censored as a Chinese blog... and congrats to slashdot. THis may be the first time a site was taken down by slashdot users without it being a bandwidth issue.
Based on all the negative comments about his project, I can tell you guys just don't get it. This is academic. And anybody that has ever had to read academic thesis will know that it's their job to put useless thoughts on paper. Furthermore, it looks like he's doing a great job!
There's one reason, plain and simple, that I won't go to the movies. It has nothing to do with money, not being able to pause the movie, etc. It's the fact that every time I go, it's packed with high school kids acting like children. It doesn't matter what movie I'm watching. Even movies where I'd expect an older crowd, we've got high school kids yelling back and forth at each other, cell phones going off. This is in Naples, Florida too, where the average age is pretty high up there. For one reason or another, the movies are always a shitshow so I'd much rather stay at home where it's quiet.
Seems to me that the software more stores should carry is for Mac OS. I'm really surprised to see Best Buy and Circuit City (the two stores in my town for software) not selling any Mac software other than ordering online. Just seems that by now there are enough mac users out there to make it justifiable. I'm not asking for aisles and aisles, but a small corner of the more popular titles wouldn't hurt.
We had to see this one coming. The spyware/adware folks are getting good at putting their "product" everywhere. It was only a matter of time before bittorrent reached critical mass and became a good target.
One thing I can tell you is that the IT department at the company where I work has bastardized our Windows even more than Microsoft. We have no media player, no solitaire, nothing fun:)
The Kim Commando show? Seriously, that show sounds like they put a phone in a mental institution and let the patients phone in. Please don't use that as your proxy.
I think the big problem is with the old adage, "If its not broke, don't fix it." In Microsoft's case, I guess its really, "If it's less broke, don't fix it." The problem is that people understand Microsoft's constant problems so they stick with something that works for them until they have a compelling reason to switch, such as better security, a loss of support, or huge new features. I think this presents a problem though because it encourages Microsoft to add a bunch of "features" even if they aren't needed. This could really lead to them losing a core focus on what they're trying to produce. Just my $0.02.
(begin sarcasm)
Wow, it's about time someone wrote a book about HTML and CSS. I went to the Barnes and Noble and couldn't find a single one on the subject. Are they trying to keep this stuff a secret?
(end sarcasm)

There's a lesson to be learned from this. Always check your pay stub. You never know when your employer is going to short you $100 million.

If this project evolves and somehow we have a fully web-based OS, I would bet it would STILL be more secure than Windows.
I really don't think proof-reading would have helped. The problem is much simpler--the author is an idiot.

$70 for a mouse?? You sure Apple doesn't make this mouse?

"to the moon" even... didn't notice the typo before submitting.
I want to preface this by saying I do think NASA went to the moon... but I do think its funny to read the conspiracy theories... there's always a few. http://www.space.com/news/spacehistory/moon_hoaxes _010215.html
Isn't it ironic that to trick a user into clicking a fake email, they use the fakest of all celebrities?
