  1. Re:Nice, but I feel like it's hopeless... on National TV Turn Off Week · · Score: 2, Funny

Most people do not want to be free of TV. You have to want to not watch TV and see that your life could be better without it.

That's why we never disconnect anyone over 30. Their minds simply can't handle it. -The Matrix

Where is Virginia Tech? When I started in 1998 we were the most wired campus in the nation. By the time I left (yes, 4 years later) Tech had started to introduce wireless. Come on guys, who dropped the ball?

Here is a link to CNN's 'News Tips' section where you can submit breaking news and ideas. I sincerely hope some of the slashdot population takes advantage of this as I just did.

A superfluid is a fluid that flows without viscosity, meaning that if you were to stir a spoon in a superfluid soup, you could take out the spoon and the soup would keep swirling forever on, since there is no mechanism there (i. e. no friction) to make the vortex you just made disappear.

How exactly does the spoon start the soup swirling? If a superfluid has no viscosity, the spoon isn't able to disturb it, right?

Here are two things that no one's brought up yet. Any thoughts?

CandyMan: Neo accepted a piece of candy from the Oracle. Was this akin to the cake that the blonde ate in the resteraunt? Though it wasn't shown in the same detail (thank goodness!), it could be a program that altered his choices for the rest of the movie. Maybe this is why "The One" isn't like the others.

If you remember Neo's first encounter with the Oracle, you'll remember that he took a cookie. Same premise?

Religions 'R Us: Here's one more likeness of Neo to religious lore. In one scene Trinity is seated, looking up in the air. She holds Neo in her arms; his body limp and lifeless. This is the exact image of a classic sculpture depicting Jesus and some lady. (I wish I could remember which one, but the last time I looked at stuff like that was in High School!) Uncanny, isn't it?

Several of you have mentioned that you've been able to make the laptop work as I have sugguested. Now the question is "What worked for you?" Not so much software wise, but hardware wise. What PCMCIA nics worked the easiest? or at all? On the other side of the token, what definitivly didn't work?

How does one go about cooling down a laptop? With my desktops, I can just pop 'em open and toss in another fan, but with a laptop you get a very compact design. This comes close to eliminating the room that I would normally use for a cooling fan. All I can think of would be to mount a common house fan underneath the laptop and turn it on. =D

  8. How useful are old laptops, really? on Can Old Laptops Be Routers Too? · · Score: 2

My P75 laptop is rather dated. It can't be upgraded to handle more than 20 Mb of ram (who came up with that number?)

Several others have mentioned the usefulness of old Laptops, but I'm not sure where they get this idea. If you are running windows (sorry, but it's useful sometimes), you aren't all that good off. I currently have Win95 on there with MS office, an FTP application, and a web browser. With more than two of these open at once, I almost want to put the poor processor out of it's misery. While I haven't tried installing Linux on the thing, would the performance really increase that much? I'm sure X would be struggling all the same. If this is the case, what better use than as a packet passer?

True, but are there specific reasons not to? Are there any problems asociated with leaving a laptop on 24/7? This isn't the way they are normally used.
