  1. (Read all of it) Nash gets form letter rejection on John Nash's Declassified 1955 Letter To the NSA · · Score: 5, Funny

After Nash invents modern cryptography, explains it quite eloquently in a few pages of hand written notes, and designs and builds an electronic machine that automatically encrypts / decrypts the messages. He is then sent form letter rejection by the government: "It has been found that cryptographic principles involved in your system, although ingenous, do not meet the necessary requirements for official application."

  5. More sink or swim please! on Professor Questions Sink-Or-Swim Intro To CS Courses · · Score: 1

I have long thought that "sink or swim" classes were the only classes worth attending. The possibly to "sink" comes from the classes actually trying to teach something hard. They cover material that requires time and practice to learn. This is a great thing. Algebra is one such class. CS 101 is another. This isn't to say you need to just smite everyone who can't understand what a function is right away, but the reason these classes seem so hard is because they actually ARE hard. How awesome.

This is the kind of asshole response that causes people to abandon slashdot's community in favor of reddit's. Do you realize that we need new users or this site will become irrelevant? There are clear trends (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/slashdot.org+reddit.com+digg.com) that that is already happening. Try being nice for once.

While you are correct that you don't need calculus or differential equations in most programming / technology sector jobs, it is also important to note that to get the jobs in the first place many of us had to get BS degrees in programs that did require those classes. We really do know calculus, and it is likely that because of that we are smarter and better able to do our jobs.

Ask your programmer friends. I bet they would agree...

    The use of goto for error cases seem fine when writing the code, the problem comes when you are maintaining it. Puzzle: what is wrong? void puzzle() { a = new... if (failure) goto cleanup: b = new... if (failure) goto cleanup: delete b; cleanup: delete a; return; }

  12. Work ethic on Critical Shortage of IT Workers in Coming Years · · Score: 1

It doesn't really matter to me if there is a shortage because reguardless I will do my job better then most people could -- I will improve where others will stagnate -- I will learn new tricks as others get complacent.

The problem with the US is that we as a people want things to be given to us, and as I see it now that isn't happening for IT anymore. Yes, the easy jobs are going overseas, and the people who don't actually know anything can't get jobs. It is unsuprising that the large bodies of Americans who could go to any major choose the path of least resistance -- not IT, not CS -- where they can continue to work minimally and be paid well. Good for them for being smart, I hope they make it.

But for us this isn't the end of days, this is a chance to prove yourself again and again. For those of us with work ethics, I doubt we have anything to fear.

  13. Real stores on Online Shoppers Aren't Impulsive · · Score: 1

It is all about access to information, the internet has it, and stores do not. What I wonder is as portable internet access takes off, will the same trends start to happen with real stores as well.

Example: See a TV sale in Best Buy jump online to find out what is going on -- look at reviews -- look at other deals -- look at newer models that the store might not have in yet.

People will look up facts IN the stores themselves just as they look them up while online shopping!

    What does everyone think?

  14. Reverse Compatibility on PSP Hacks and the Mainstream · · Score: 1

There is only one mod I want for the PSP: A Super Nintendo emulator that plays off of a memory stick.

Yes, this is a long way off, but let me get this meme kicking for a moment.

There are many reasons why the PSP is the perfect choice for this:
First -- the PSP screen is beautiful and would be perfect for Super Nintendo games.
Second -- Super Nintendo has exactly the same number of buttons as a PSP.
Third -- the PSP has plenty of processing power to handle emulating a Super Nintendo
Forth -- the games can be easily read off of memory stick storage and probably directly into memory.

Now let's think about the games that would now be playable on that big beautiful portable screen:
    Super Mario World,
    Donkey Kong Country,
    FF3,
    Chrono Trigger,
    Street Fighter 2,
    Legend of Zelda,
    Super Mario Kart
    ...

Just imagine it! You too might even buy a PSP if these were the games offered - Yay reverse compatability.
