Is it the agony of losing jobs to India that's making this tim guy say this?Is he being racist?Or is it the typical ingorance of the american simpleton? Did he forget to RTFA himself? Is it the fact that living in Seattle is showing up on the poor soul (what with the M$ winds blowing from that direction?) It's time to boot out such ignorant, partonizing frustrated individuals from slashdot(or boycott slashdot itself for having allowed such arrogant statements). Speaks volumes about the incompetent editors of slashdot, doesn't it? They would probably prove that they're unbiased by letting through future posts that speak of "Some black american guy who plays a bit of Basketball" or "some fag from princeton who keeps jabbering about game theory" or "some american chess guy who's running round the globe to save his ass". Such posts are in real bad taste, to say the least, and the editors are showing their pathetic standards by letting them through. STFW for Srinivasa Ramanujam, read through his findings, (given your negative IQ , you might spend the next decade of your life trying to comprehend what he put together in a year) and you'll know the enormity of the achievements of "Indian math guy". Installing Fedora core doesn't make you a genius, wise one.
"Microsoft's bought-and-paid-for whore.."
And who's bought and paid for you, holy one? IBM?I can only feel sorry about the inability of some people to understand the news that they read.Such pathetic naivete.
Stop the Sun flaming, wise guy. If you can't add anything of value to the main topic (which is just a technical comparison of the middleware suites & the desktops), don't waste real estate by repeating the favorite slashdot past time of flaming Sun. And as far as "sun is a company in trouble" is concerned, looks like you don't read anything on the web other than slashdot. Leap out of your dark, confined well and you'll see where Sun's headed. As for their toplines & profits, only time will tell how soon they can make a complete turnaround. Of course, you're welcome to continue flaming if you don't have anything else to do & plenty of time to kill.
kidding right?
Yes and No. A geek's grandmom is supposed to be able to wade through all that "press F6", "Press Shift+F10" maze.:-))
But then, the layman still falls for the mesmerizing (read hypnotizing) gui and says, "ah! that installer was a breeze!" (before realizing that he just lost all his partitions to the devil).:p
I installed S10 on a test box at office, and the installation was pretty cool. If you want to compare it to linux for "user friendliness" of the installer, well,i'm afraid you're on the wrong track.Because, if you're talking about an installer made for a dumb user (as tech ignorant as your grandmom), you're tending towards windoze. You don't even deserve to be posting here on/. In addition,it was good to see the slick JDS3. Two things stood out after the installation of S10 - 1) The installer was a lot easier than was made out by S10-flamers at/. 2)S10 is not just for admins who telnet to the machine and issue arcane incantations. JDS3 make S10 a strong candidate for a corporate desktop. Add a Sun Ray to it, and you have a sure-fire windoze killer. And running my apps on S10 has been, without doubt, one of the greatest joys of life. There isn't enough room here on/. for me to describe the sheer thrill that i experienced when my first DTrace script gave an inside look into the system resources that my app was consuming. The rush of adrenalin has to be experienced to be believed. And if you want to learn operating systems from scratch, Solaris is your reference manual. Sun deserves countless belssings for such a beauty of an implementation. Long live Solaris!!!
Excellent point anthony. Those lunatic terrorosits MUST get caught & be brainwashed (if that is possible)every single time. It's human life that's at stake. You need peace to talk science & technology. Social security & well being comes. You can later fight & debate about who's stealing whose jobs. btw, people in the us don't realize that, by outsourcing, it's the american companies that are making bigger bucks and bigger profits. => the richer corporates are getting richer & the average tech worker is out on the road on his ass. Absolute, extreme capitalism. The kind that dubyaman promotes. Americans have only themselves to blame for their current state and for voting such nepotists to power. They're solely responsible for the economic unrest & imbalance that the american society is winessing. And how did Mr.Dubya manage to come back to power?Through his doomsday prophecies and by painting bizzare pictures of victory over evil in Iraq. And how many american mothers have lost their sons in the process? Can you even count? And who's benefitting from all this? (Ever heard of halliburton?) Root out the evils in your own land before you ridicule people of another country trying to make a living. You can then compete on an even keel.
Sun's selling linux/opteron boxes only to low end customers. Remember, a linux box comes kick ass cheap and does not have half the features of S10. But for the serious ones, Sun still offers S10 on Sparc(heard of the 32 way Niagara?that's what you would call a beast of a server.A server for real internet workloads). The take home points: 1)Sun sells Linux too(surprise, surprise!!). 2)It does this for the low end guys 3)Sparc is still the defacto chip for any serious high end customer. 4)Sun's amd boxes will be far superior to those of IBM & HP. Why? 'cos HP & IBM don't have their own industry standard OSes, while sun has a beauty in the form of Solaris10 that will give you better value for money on your AMD64 processors. Finally, learn to accept the truth.Call a spade a spade.S10 is simply a superioir OS to any other OS that exists on this planet today. Embrace it or be left behind. Use DTrace if you like S10 or be content with using top and gather cobwebs snuggling up to a cute penguin.
Couldn't agree more. Most of the agreement has to do with identity & interoperability of software products. The rest of the story was an off-court settlement by M$ (in other words, accepting defeat and paying the compensation, so to say). Stop thes brainless rants like "Sun is on M$'s team", "M$ asked to open up solaris to kill linux" and crap like that. If you can accept the truth that Solaris is a better OS than Linux, embrace it. Noone in Sun is trying to kill Linux. Remember, they're promoting Linux on the desktop. Ask IBM or HP or Dell what their best-selling desktops run on. Solaris is positioned aggresively on the serverside by sun for the simple reason that it's a superior os to be running on a 32 way box.Period. (I'm saying this for the zillionth time-)Stop blindly flaming and adopt a more logical, balaced view.
"While it might be "good" for open source with IBM supporting us and all,". That's what you think. Supporting you by giving away a patent on secure set screw drivers? Are slashdotters so dumb or is it that they just don't want to realize that IBM is simply playing them & using them to it's advantage? Why did a monopolistic behemoth suddenly turn benevolent towards the community? 1)They don't have a good OS of their own any more & hence need the community to leverage the huge "following" that linux has. 2)They need to do some damage control & image restoration (or so they think) by giving away very "useful, relevant" patents to OSS. What a gem of a company! Innocent as a lamb.huh?
The 500 patents that IBM "donated" to the community are due for expiration. And some have nothing to do with OSS.Like this one... http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser? Sect1=PT O1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm &r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=6209575.WKU.&OS=PN/6209575&RS=PN/ 6209575 You must admire their skill in manipulating slashdotters & the rest of the community and using them so effectively to their own advantage.
Numbskulls like you deserve to be sued the shit ouf of, by someone like SCO. Learn to give credit where it's due. All you ingrates at slashdot will one day realise that calling sun evil & throwing the Linux buzzword takes you nowhere. Can you count upto 10 million? No? That's how many lines of code sun will be giving up. They're opening up their crown jewel. They didn't have to do that. S10 has enough great features to make it scorch the market, beating your low end, kick ass cheap linux servers hollow. They did that to reiterate their commitment for the community. They've ALWAYS given more to the community that IBM or HP. The latter 2 are the evil ones, hoodwinking shortsighted slashdotters by throwing the Linux word. Yes. Linus torvalds did a great thing by giving away the kernerl free. But so will sun now. FREE.OPEN SOURCE. Enough is enough. You now have a SUPERIOR OS open sourced. Go with it or be left behind, using some ancient linux version and dancing to the tunes of IBM & HP. btw, look at the 500 patents IBM has given out & the 1670 that sun has. You'll see that sun's patents pertain to current, hot, bleeding edge technologies. And of course, i shouldn't even mention HP. Who cares even they give out the code for ALL their rickety management software and the legacy HP-UX. They're just an integrator, an imaging & printing company. They never have & never will matter.Time you saw the light, ungrateful, dim witted slashdotters!I'm sick of your brainless anti-sun rhetoric.Use some logic.Get your grey cells working. There's nothing wrong in supporting another open source initiative for a superior OS. And this has nothing to do with M$, for chistsake.
IBM simply wants to appear a messiah of the open source world, give developers a notion that it's gonna protect linux against all the evil empires and gain goodwil and political mileage from it. 500 out of 40000 is no big deal, i would say. Instead,I'd challenge them to open up DB2. For all their rhetoric, they're scared that they'll get left behind in the race since Sun's(despite all the wrong "anti-open-source" allegations against it) about to open up the crown jewel - Solaris, which is obviously a lot more valuable and of lot more consequence than a complicated, memory-hogging, slow IDE like eclipse that IBM has donated (and made much theatre about). They're less of a technology company and more of an "acquire-and-sell" wall street broker now, spending all their cash eating smaller fish (and getting some patents along the way).
Despite all that sun's done for the community, most linux-obsessed slash dotters (who see themselves as the archetypes) fall for the HP/IBM rhetoric against sun. sun started from bsd (tell me that's not "open"). You guys just don't get it, do you?Show me half a line of code that HP's contributed to the community. Ask ibm to open up it's crown jewel- DB2 for starts. And yes, open source solaris might draw some linux developers towards it, but, they(the developers) don't turn into hideous, thieving villians;they're still contributing to open source, still fuelling innovation, still strengthening the original bsd tribe (is that anti-linux now?) and still workin against M$. The 2 (solaris & linux) are under the same umbrella. They're siblings in the *nix family.
Yes, running a uname -s on the 2 systems will yield a different name- if that's something you want to hold against solaris (you can laugh, but slashdotters are getting that gullible these days)- but that doesn't mean "Solaris's gonna kill Linux". What crap. The 2 are now part of the same moment. If you still want to "boycott" the new kid in town & shoot yourself in the foot (by selling your soul to HP,IBM & hence M$), no one's stopping you.
Looks like you need a million more SCO-like suits to come make to earth with a thud. "The vultures are circling, and I, for one, can't wait until *something* happens to Sun. Get bought, go bankrupt," -- that'll be the day when M$ takes over the world, pal. And that'll be the day when the hypocritical pseudo linux-advocates like IBM & HP will change back to licking M$'s boots 'cos then, there'll be no one to challenge M$ on the desktop or thwart their antitrust ways (the setlement doesn't mean anything on the antitrust front, Mr.neo). Try this: ask your linux messiahs at IBM & HP to stop selling windows PCs and instead sell linux based desktops to ALL their customers. Will they? NO!! 'cos it's only the cash & M$'s incentives that matter to them. It won't take them a second to change color and dance to M$'s tunes. (Who's selling the best marketed linux desktops around-the JDS?) And you speak of all this despite watching the advent of openoffice, netbeans, looking glass, java3d, JXTA,now Solaris and a zillion such open source projects. Ask IBM to open source DB2 (HP doesn't have any s/w worth mentioning anyways). Let's talk then. Stop being puppet at the hands of evil empire, Mr.Hero. Try using your brains. See the big picture. And O/S solaris won't kill Linux. It'll only add to the proliferation of more apps for both Linux & solaris (remember janus?), much to the dismay of M$ & their hooded cohorts. And if you're a true Open source fan, why should you have problems with Solaris? Isn't redhat monetizing the community's contributions to Linux. Take a balanced, dispassionate view of the world and you'll see the light, wise one.
