    It sounds like you have had a lot of knowlege experience and lesson learned on this have you ever thought of starting something on source forge. If you started something on source forge where you go after one feature at a time (each being a different application to lessen dependencies like one of the guys/gals said below) other people might join and get this thing done. If you make everything module and pluggable by design more people could pick which features they could use.

    Of course I wasn't sure from your post if you were trying to get a product that you could sell so I am not sure if you want to do that. I don't know all the capabilities of the exchange server I just know about email and calendaring but if someone started something I would help out anything to get linux and other open source programs a better chance.

    Practice what you preach. TCP/IP is open and well documented your fucking company had the balls to copy the code from bsd.

    Also you damn well know that if the protocols aren't working right that lookout won't work and no one will use the open source product because they will miss all their fucking viruses! If there is any chance to replace the server it will have to work with existing clients first or no manager will pick it because it won't be 100% transparent switch.

    he also said that it can take over a citrix environment. Does that mean everyone shouldn't be using the apps on the citrix environment or does that mean that we shouldn't have any more root passwords because we know our users can get root access?

    Normally you would be right but since m$ also trains these bozos they are at fault because they didn't stress good admin practices on their fill in the bubbly sheet. I don't know if buisnesses are being infected or what but in the code red thing the same thing happened and it even infected microsoft owned sites which run with they guys that use a number 2.

    Something that you can do is use the public media to report this at least they aren't owned by hollywood. I have tried to write to newshour, frontline, morning edition, and all things consider. If these people are flooded with comments on cprm, dmca, ucita, current patent laws and other things that effect software they might do a report.

    So far I am the only one that I know of that has written to these people once they do a report more people might get interested. If we keep this only on slashdot linuxtoday and theregister and other sites that only "geeks" look at I doubt anyone else that doesn't know about what is going on will learn what is going on.

    Once more people know what is going on then maybe the lawmakers will be interested. At least Rick Boucher from virginia is interested. The more people that we get the better but if we just continue to talk to people that already know what is going on I doubt it will do anything except waste bandwidth.

    you might be able to figure that out for yourself. If you aren't making millions of dollars, if you aren't catholic, don't like school prayer, don't care about woman's rights, education, non big bisness then why the hell do you want to vote republican? We have a republican senate and house, the judges are 4 conservative 5 liberal and you want to through in a republican president with an ultra conservative vp? Are you some sort of priest that owns a big buisness and makes lot of money? Here is some evidence.

    I have used both the newest version 2.4 desktop and 2.2. 2.2 had problems where expect and the latest version of java wouldn't work. I haven't seen a lot of problems with 2.4 except there is no pluggable module for openssl into webmin. Not to mention that my manager was pretty impressed with it too. I have to admit I haven't run redhat since 5.2 and mandrake since 6.something and didn't like any of them then. I think caldera for an rpm based distro is pretty good. If I had a faster connection I would of just stayed with debian.

    I haven't read the bill but this is what I have picked up on it in some places. This bill will make reverse engineering a little bit harder. Which means if some linux office suit wants to be able to save as ms format tough. I think this is the type of thing that people are worried about or at least one of the many things.

    But how would the recording studios be brought onto this new format. Obviously they don't care about non windows and mac market why would they want to change. We would have to make an open format that is far more superior that would draw both the recording studios and the consumers. By the way are there any in the works?

    For the most part I think that the well aware are doing the least amount of worrying about this y2k thingy. I thought that until I received an email from my school's computer center about y2k (our school is targeted for science and engineering).

    The letter said that before the new year the school will be shutting down all servers and computers in the machine room not sure if this also means routers and switches also but I think it does. They also encourage students to turn off their computers and even unplug them from the wall over break! I know that the school is trying to be a little over cautious and maybe they are trying to avoid law suits but wow talk about paranoia, they are not even trusting the power company.

    To bring it to a close not all the knowlegable people are sleeping at night about this y2k thingy. Of course I think my school's computer center might be a special case because I don't know many people at other schools who have such a y2k polocy.

    I thought the reason why the smp support in linux isn't great is because of kernel locking. I thought that when the kernel got to a semaphore it would lock out the kernel making sure other processors wouldn't create a race condition. I remember reading this some where but I forgot where so I don't know which series this was on. I think in kernel 2.4 they are going to fix the locking mechanism.

    I know that caldera does use rpm but I am not sure if the file system structure is exaclty the same. I usually install from tarballs so I don't really care but if you look at their site under knowledge down load and updates you will find out that their programs you suggest to update your system with you use rpm as your package manager. My primary system is debian so don't take my word for it check it out

    I don't doubt that this type of stuff is out there root kits and other software packages can already install this type of stuff packet sniffer, keyboard grabbers, screen grabbers and other stuff. What some of the people have been saying is getting a stealth chip that manufactors have to put in. Something that needs a specific 'key' to open the back door over the net if the chip is in your computer. That is what I am worried about. What if someone can re invent that 'key'.

    I know that this is very unlikely just because most manufactors probably won't go for something like that. What I am hoping is that the government will take into consideration what ever they do they have to make sure that if someone can replicate that 'key' down the road it won't cause much of a problem. Basically all I am asking is if the government wants to put in a mandortry back door that is a hard ware solution they better make sure no one can reproduce a 'key' to open it.

    It is sorta like a phone tap the person being investigated doesn't know that they are being wire tap. They still have to get approval from the judge. What I would really be worried about is what if this device what ever it is fell into the hands of industrial saburtors or other types of malicious people. If this device or program could be re-created then there is a lot of information any one cauld take and if it could be operated from remote ...

    I have a question on a dos attack. It looks like they don't have the best logging system available. What if we sent them malformed packets to the system would that crash the logger making the system shutdown. Gotta love it when the system log gets full the machine shuts down (well at least that is what they said earlier).

    I definitly don't know enough about kerb but I thought in kerb 4 there was a way to spoof a machine. I never tried this but could this be used to spoof localhost or not even bother? Or should we not even try util they launch it? Thanks for the reply i have asked that numerous times with no answer.

    What popularity no one can get to it half of the time :) Does anyone know what port 88 does on the nt box. I see it as being unfiltered but I don't have a clue what the hell it does.

    On the linux ppc guest book they went a little bit furthur and enable html which I don't think ms has enabled. I would check but I can't :). But i can view it fine with lynx anyways since it doesn't support java script. It works fine for me I am not sure if anyone else wants to use it or if just just like pressing the stop button before the forward.

    The question is windows 2000 is suppose to have kerb authentication does anyone know this is supposed to be local or remote. And if only certain machines can get it could we some how spoof that machine? I know very little about windows nt 2000 since i am not a beta test but I heard that somewhere.

    has anyone tried this takeing an image and trying to go through https. It was on securityfocus and I am not sure if it has been fixed or what. They said that the iis people know about it but i am not sure if it is working?

    I have been reading a lot of press on this haven't done much with it but there are no real statistics here. The linuxppc chalenge gives you the memory usuage and uptime right to the minute why can't M$ do something like that?

    Also with all the blunders with this project and this being their best of the crop why is their stock not going down. I have been hearing a lot of press about this. Do investors take this into account or just say since it is m$ they know what they are doing. I know nothing of stocks really but if your newest and best producted was tested in the 'real' world and broke ever 14 something hours I wouldn't want to invest in it.

    It may be that all the distros could agree on a setup that is common to all. And when a user chooses this set up they get a desktop linux computer. One that doesn't act like a server and that will have the easiest to use wm. But of course all the distros would have to talk, test, and decide if this is what they want to do and I am not sure if they would be willing to do it.

    I agree that we shouldn't feed the fire but maybe an article or two of the latests comparisons with orcal and the survey from last week that reported that nt was used on non mission critical servers. There was a lot of coverage of the mindcraft article i think it was on cnet but non of the following surveys/tests that showed linux was better was there.

    I do think that the IT managers have to be shown that linux is a great server operating system and that it beats out nt show them what apps they get (server end) and maybe it will help IT managers serch for better servers. Lets face it it's not the peons that wrote this article and the many like it that run the world it is the decision makers that have to be proven which operation system is better.

    Every article that bashes linux that goes main stream will help show IT managers that Linux is bad. For every article written about Linux that doesn't go main stream will show the programmers of the world which one is better (and we already know which one is better).

    Just because their code is locked isn't the problem you have to remember that even M$ doesn't even understand the code in windows 2000 at least a percentage of it. How does one improve something that they don't fully comprehend.

    One person that is trying this is at http://www.linux1.org. Also I watched some of what was said on the kernel list and they said that 2.2.2 was picked because of specfic performance issues.

    Another person who posted something earlier or latter is right we aren't going anywhere if we don't do anything. What we could do is make easier to use configuration tools, make more devices available, contribute to your favoriote window manager, the list goes on. The point is with us just talking about it nothing is getting done.

    Maybe we should set up a contribution site and have people click on what type of project they want and then there would be a list of projects to pick from to do. I know that there are some sites that do this already but I am not sure how extensive.
