  1. Pile-o-crapola! on Ford Airstream Electric Concept Car · · Score: 1

Hydrogen is an energy transport medium, NOT a fuel. Get this straight- using hydrogen only moves the location of the "prime mover," it does NOT offer any energy savings. In fact, it actually is LESS efficient, due to conversion losses.

From where does the hydrogen come? Electrolysis of water.

From where does the electricity come?

This is just so much pandering to the Liberal Green Tree Huggers!

I invite all to do a simple excercise: Look up the annual demand for gasoline in the USA, multiply by 85%, and find the total amount of ethanol needed for E-85, if it were to meet demand.

NOW- look up the ethanol yield per acre of corn, and calculate the acreage needed to meet this demand.

Since I have a slight fondness for eating dinner, I cannot see converting 90% of ALL arable land in the USA to ethanol production, just to make motor fuels!!! And this does not consider the additional acreage of soybeans needed to supply the demand for biodiesel!

ALL this hybrid/hydrogen/biodiesel/ethanol hype is pure marketing and politics! IT DOES NOT COMPUTE, except for huge agrobusinesses like ADM!

But it damn sure makes good ad copy, and makes Liberals feel good!

    At least until they starve.

Looky here- If you so despise burning fossil fuels, THEN WALK! Using the arable land to produce fuel for humans is far more economical and enviromentally sane than making any of these fuels de jour.

  2. Take a hint from the chemical industry on Whose Burden is it to Recycle Computers? · · Score: 1

Why bill the consumer for disposal?

The Law clearly states that the manufacturer of a chemical has "cradle-to-grave" responsibility for the substance. So should it be for electronics! The manufacturer should be legally required to offer prepaid shipping to their selected recycling plant for all discarded equipment. HP has been doing this for years fortheir LaserJet cartridges.

This would be a cost of doing business to the equipment manufacturer, just as it is for other industries. This would be factored into the selling price.

Now if the Consumer refuses to avail himself of this, then the responsibility falls on him for not recycling. But the addition of a Government-collected "recycling fee" is utter BS- it is but another way that the Government fleeces the People, IMHO.

The real problem here is that both the legit $$$ interests AND the crime syndicates are running amok on the Web, and there is no one to police either one's activities!

The CANSPAM act is useless, and the average Joe on the internet today is clueless. I wonder how many church-going Christians have zombified boxes spewing porno spam across the Inet?

So how to civilize the Inet?

I suggest that the "good guys" organize, and we build our own enforcement grid supercomputer. We've seen similar attempts to DoS attack bad servers with screensavers- let's take this to the next level, and build a system to squelch the spammers, Russian Mafya, and phishers/pharmers! Then after it has been proven to work, the law will eventually catch up with us.

  5. Will eBay changes stop fencing? on eBay Begins A Change · · Score: 1

As we all know, eBay is the world's largest, and most profitable, fence for stolen goods. Their EULA shields them from prosecution, and they make money from the sales of stolen merchandise!

I, personally, have found items stolen from me being auctioned on eBay by the thieves. Proven by matching VIN's, even! But will eBay offer ME any assistance in retrieving my stolen property? All I get is an autoresponder telling me to discuss it with my local law enforcement agency.

Meanwhile, eBay continues to profit, and felons continue to sell their ill-gotten wares on eBay.

And I'm not even going to touch the sniping issue!

eBay is fatally flawed; their demise, and the incarceration of their principals, cannot happen too soon, IMHO.

Then I think I should have a "donation" of whatever new miracle drug is developed by use of the grid.

If there are 50,000 CPU's on the grid, and it develops an anti-cancer drug that sells for $20 per dose, then just giving a single dose to every CPU owner on the grid would be worth $1 million.

Does Hoescht, Novartis, GSK, Bayer, Merck, etc. REALLY need our donations to increase their profits?

Wake up and smell the coffee, /.ers! The ONLY difference between using your hard-earned computing power for the profit of big business pahrma houses and for the profits of big business spamhouses is that you AGREED to let them put a Trojan on your box! IBM and their partners are no better than the SkyNet, IMHO- THEY BOTH SELL YOUR PROPERTY FOR THE PROFITS OF OTHERS!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? DO THEY PAY YOU FOR CPU USAGE? WILL THEY LET YOU HAVE A FREE DOSE OF AIDS VACCINE IF THE GRID DEVELOPS IT? I think not- you'll have to fork over cash, just like all the others who want the benefits arrived at from YOUR contribution.

Grid computing is based on a totally flawed economic premise- they think that CPU cycles are absolutely free! I put $thousands into my box- if a for-profit business wants to use my excess resources, then LET THEM PAY THE FREIGHT!
