I understand it but what I don't is why it took them exactly 50 days to validate the application - to review my submitted documents. Why? How can they validate the submitted documents printed on my home printer from who-know what source? Probably by checking the on-line databases. There is no other way. Could not they do that before automaticly? They could ask me to fill the link pointing directly to the national database... or they could create a robot to do it it is not so difficult...
Yesterday they accepted my application after 50 days from the date they recieved the documents and 60 days after I applied for the domain. Now I have 40 days long period for ADR before I can use my domain => 60 + 40 = it will take 100 days to register my.EU domain.
As the customer I'm not satisfied with the speed of the service.
"40 days to provide proof":-) I was VERY surprised when I was applying to my.eu domain. The proof is simply any paper you can print on your personal printer. It does not need to be validated, approved... nothing like this. If you go to any national trademark authority's web pages and you hit PRINT in your browser - then you have a PROOF.
I found it when packing the proof and checking the condition terms. I had OFFICIAL declaration of ownership issued by state authority which means that it is a "public document" in our country. Such as document is protected by our law. You cannot write on it, alter it, fake it,... When checking the conditions I found out that there was said I'm supposed to put my signature on every page of the proof. I thought if I'll do that than I commit the crime! I contacted our domain registrar and they replied that I should scan it, print it on my printer and then sign it. I was told to do not send original papers because if I sent more papers or less papers or papers with clip on it - they can cancel my registration!
I didn't get the point. Why should I sent the printed web page. Does the PWC have no Internet connection? This is what I call bureaucracy.
And 40 days period? My domain: Applied: 09/01/2006 Documents received: 19/01/2006 Deadline ADR (procedure against decision can be initiated before): 18/4/2006
So I applied in January and I cannot use the domain until April. Bureaucracy is slower then 40 days...
Speaking about XY numbers of downloads... but did somebody mention how much users feel satisfied after one month of usage?
There is 300 million of people that have a flu out there (+- few millions;-), we can easily create ads like this: "Flu community grown to 300 millions flu users!". But does it say something valuable except that the "product" is "catchy"? Does this information reveals the loyalty, satisfaction, excitement of the users or quality of the product? No.
I believe that browsers should not be just about the style or other kind of hype (well, they partially are, but it is simply caused by small number of competing products and big names behind them that create huge bias).
Browsers are developed to be used on daily bases. If you use something on daily basis then the excitement can disappear very quickly and the only important thing that will remain is the feeling of satisfaction from the quality product or the pain... But this is the information that cannot be read from the number of downloads.
I personnaly feel very excited about Firefox. I use it as my primary browser. I feel satisfied on 65% and the rest is the pain because I must work with Firefox every day and I fight its weaknesses every day. (For example one serious unresolved bug that crashes Firefox prevents me from going with my own XUL CMS live - this is my biggest 6-month old pain, but you cannot obtain this information from my 3+ download points that I generated in the download statistics).
Thanks for clarifying. This looks better to me. CNet took only the first part and I'm sure that it is in the best Microsoft's interest to have it published on other blogs and blogs about blogs and news about news without the other sentence."
It is clear message and I cannot imagine better marketing message for customers... But if I know that this is not question of life:-) then the impact is lesser on me;-) But it is good to know that there are people employed by Microsoft who are not insane to (literally) risk the life for company driven by profit;-) .
Saying "...but certainly not in any product I work on." was the part that I was missing before (If he leaves the Microsoft then it can be a sign that things changed - if I can believe his words).
What to add? Nonsense is Nonsense only in given time and under given circumstances. Under different circumstances and in other times the Nonsense can give a big Sense.;-) And... do not be lazy to check the real source because what is written is not always the whole truth - thanks for the small lesson.
One man does not represent the whole company. I think that saying "over my dead body" is just a hyperbole. I dought that one Microsoft's employee can influence the whole company. I don't understand what makes that man to put his own words in the risk if he must know that he is not the only one that decides... He should not do that if he honours his words, it makes me be in doubt about his words and his credibility.
Right words should be: "I will resign if...", "I'll put all my influence behind...",...
Hm. "Do no evil"(TM) is just a trademark... They should come up with some logo for it. For example rounded label "No evil inside", oh, better not or somebody could think that there is no Windows inside...
But wait didn't they defend the same stance hand in hand with Microsoft in the "obeying local law" case in China? If Microsoft is an evil what is Google then? Or is the Google evil and Microsoft good? Or are they both evil... or good? And wait what is "evil" and what is "good"? Oh, sure, just brand. It sounds good and people may thing that it is true because it was broad casted on the TV and TV is about real life.
I simply do not like cheap labels. It is better to watch the actions and then make the opinion then listen to propaganda and trying to match expected behavior to the real behavior. It remembers me my childhood when I had to attend the "Pioneer" organization (organization for very young people before they could join the communist party) I saw similar "good" labels there and it taught me a lot when I grown up.
"Our trade deficit with China is 200 billion dollars.. the U.S. economy is worth 12.37 trillion dollars."
There is no information value in this sentence.
I give you an example (it is not real, just showing the way how statistics does not reflect the real life): US imports 1 ton of fabric from China for $100.000 US made 50.000 Tommy Hilfiger jeans for $20 each from 1 ton of fabric originated from China = $1.000.000
How the trade statistics can be calculated? Probably by good's value: 1. US consumed the goods for 1 million of dollars 2. China imported goods for 100.000 dollars 3. It means that the value 900.000 was created in US 4. Resume: US produce 90% of goods because only the 10% is imported from China
"Our trade deficit with China is 200 billion dollars.. the U.S. economy is worth 12.37 trillion dollars.." I just wanted to say that if China closes the borders there will not be only 200 billion dollars damage mad to US... I can understand the US patriotism and why everybody tends to say "We don't need them, they need us", but this is not how the things are. China needs US as much as US needs China.
(Calculations are inaccurate and the author is not an economist and is not affiliated with economy almost in any way;-)
I'm sure that US is going to do compromises because it is less costly then switching the trade routes for Malaysia and alike... math here is not as difficult.
"I don't know about Europe, but in the U.S., aprox 85% of the goods consumed here are produced right here in the U.S. That percentage is down quite a bit (it used to be in the lower 90%s in 1992), but we still produce the vast majority of our own goods.." What is your source? What kind of goods? Sure, I guess that we have approximately the same percentage because it does not payback to import bread from China...
"We'll just have to get our paper drink umbrellas (and other cheaply made consumable crap) from someplace else. Wal-mart will be harmed a little while they forge new relationships with Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, and Malaysia..."
I'm afraid that your paper drink umbrellas may cost twice as much because Taiwan and Philippines will double the prices because of the increased demand... I'm afraid that you will need to pay twice as much for your Nike shoes, ThinkPad, mobile phone, t-shirts, pants, slippers, watches... and I think that even your new car "made in USA" will be twice as expensive because all the technology (and other inputs) used for the car production costs twice as much... and... and... ("twice as much" is just exaggeration;-)
Maybe it will end up that Americans will find out that it is cheaper to produce paper drink umbrellas (and other cheaply made consumable crap) in USA and you will have a chance to be employed (if yes, you will be the other lucky half that have a job in USA).
My advice is that you should maybe buy extra paper umbrellas ASAP and have a nice evening with your friends while discussing the "globalization" phenomena and interconnection of global economy where nobody can stay aside and simply watch while having paper drink umbrellas...
Believe me, I wish you the wealth for the rest of your life... because it will be a sign that the global economy is stable - for me and for you. The Black Thursday crash of the Exchange was reflected in Europe a years later... Believe me, you will personally feel any global instability or tension just in hours or days when it happens - this is the drawback of the communication speed...
Sure, this will (hopefully) never happen. Let's hope that this is a sci-fi. I didn't study the economy but I'm sure the opinion that there is always other "cheap labor" waiting to work for less money and that USA can stay safely aside by simply switching the trade routes from China to Malaysia, it is really... hmm, not wise.
I'm not fighting against USA or China; I simply think that we are on the same boat. If China goes down so the USA and Europe... But I'm sure, that this time it is not the case:-) I think that this conflict will be "solved" to satisfy all and it will teach us that China, USA and anybody else have the right to preserve maximum sovereignty while keeping the global stability because the boat becoming to be too small and unstable.
US must be defeated to win its "democratic" label.
"In an earlier age, Mao said that the Party must be in control of the gun."
Yes, and this is the weakness of the US. They simply cannot control the gun. They are trying to keep the control of the Internet root servers but they are doomed to fail because of the one word - "democracy".
By this moment US lost its advantage. The whole play was about "we think that nobody will dare it" and look it happened. US is loosing, US except the "irrational hope" have nothing in the pocket. What now?
There is no dough that the biggest impact is on businesses on both sides - in China and in the rest of the world.
And guess what, what will you see on the TV? Will you see every small demonstration for no-CHINAnet in China? Surely not. They "control the gun" so no "unacceptable information" is going to cross their borders. What will be broad-casted on TV is the demonstration of few people in front of the White House... and impact? There can be thousands of people demonstrating in China but nobody will know, nobody will bother. In contrast there can be dozen of people demonstrating in front of White House and millions of people will speak about it... That is a HUGE difference. That is why US is going be defeated!
That is why US must be defeated to win its "democratic" label.
Who needs whom? Does China needs more US or US needs more China? Who will suffer more from current state?
Answer is simple. Both sides will be damaged the same. Chinese may have problems contacting customers and Americans may have problem contacting suppliers.
So what is the difference? Who will benefit from it? Why the China could dare it? Answer is again very simple. That one who stays longer wins. Here we are, this is the weakness of US! Why? US tries to be democratic, China (badly) pretends to be democratic.
And guess, whose government will be able to keep the stance longer? Is it the government which claims to represent its voters (who may be badly hurt by the situation)? Or is it the other government who claim to represent the only Party that is driven by abstract ideology?
The wishes of common people are clear: they want to have one working accessible Internet. So which side can and which side must listen to the common people (businesses)?
Why to limit data transfer? They can include the number of hits/transfered data in the pageRank, right? So why to forbid such as valuable pageRank factor?
BTW Does the Google monitors the slashdot on regular basis? If yes, so hey guys! I was just joking saying that the next thing is GoogleHosting - http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=177070&cid=146 95299 ! And please! Do not rename the Internet to GoogleNet - that was a joke too!:-O
"The study also said that companies from a variety of sectors in the economy continue to discover greater efficiency and more competitive operations through investment in IT."
"outsourcing has actually helped our economy and provided new employment opportunities"
1+1=2, "great efficiency" means that there are being sacked people in other then IT depratments because IT department helps to be "more effecient"...
So does it mean that there are more _IT_ employment opportunities and less overall employement opportunities? (Author of this note is not an econimist...;-)
And there is even more comming! As an web developer who works on Atom implementation I see also big risk with coming RSS/Atom support in Windows Vista and all those RSS/Atom-enabled devices and browsers and aggregators...
I can imagine a users with the Windows that downloads automatically (without user's awareness) hundreds of feeds from all over the web every day... This is not "per-click" view but continuous (most of the time useless) feed updates...
If you watched what the Microsoft is ready to do then I'm afraid that your PC is going to download not only "news" but also feeds with pictures, MP3s, videos,... Can you imagine that anytime the Windows goes in screen saver mode there is a RSS/Atom subsystem that hits your website regularly just to display some pictures taken from your web on the user's monitor when he/she is off for the launch?:-) I don't know but it might be a REAL problem in the future. I hope that the speed of Internet connections will keep aligned with increasing demands...
If you are interested in PHP coding it is the best to get stick with some existing PHP platform or system that already solved this or is going to solve it: Zend collaboration or PEAR or... any existing CMS like Mamboo or...
I was maintaining my own libraries for years but I found it very difficult and ineffective because of the way I did it.
Every project was slightly different so I ended up reinventing (or breaking and fixing and enhancing) the wheel over and over...
Sure, the low-level functions can be reused easily without any changes but higher level functions that has more complicated logic are difficult to reuse in different systems which are often based on different processing logic (and went through different historical evolution)...
I realized that maintaining separated snippets of libraries is very ineffective so I decided to write Elixon Platform which helps me to organize existing libraries and still keep the same intercommunication and logic and coding style intact because it is still one Platform.
So my advise is: try to avoid looking at the libraries as at "stand-alone independent snippets" and try to integrate all libraries under one umbrella while keeping them modular and as much independent as possible.
It's shame, the free world was bought by developing countries because it was sold by commercial companies.
Products like this will help but it never solve the problem. The solution is to force the companies from the "free" world to not to censor information to "conform to local law". This will never happen because the voice of companies is stronger then voice of us (80-20 rule?: 80% of decisions is made by 20% of people - those 20% are usually people who are successful in business). "Free speech" is for free so it is not a good article for the commercial companies and never will be.
I feel the same, I'm not "able to work at my full level of technical ability and I found this frustrating". But it is not a problem of not having access to cutting-edge technologies and APIs. My boss accepts any technology I suggest without any problems... But my work frustration is not about technology. To be able to use full level of technical ability one needs the whole team working and cooperating on the highest professional level possible. If there is any problem in the team (communication, rivality, weak team member,...) then it may limit you from goin on full...
There can be many other reasons then technology, that is all wanted to say...
By opposite look: is it worth to play Q3 with strong desktop-like video card on the screen 3x3 inches wide? Is it worth?
I would advise the mobile manufacturers to sell a huge magnifier together with their phones...
Buy your own: Nokia 3231, 5MPixel photos + 10xMagnifier, Q3 for free!:-) Honestly if you have some nice demountable construction with magnifier that you can attach to your mobile then you can achieve twice as big mobile phone display!
I hope that Nokia will not patent it, so:
LICENSE: I grant this idea to public for free. You can do whatever you want to do with it, I will not demand any fees or whatsoever... blablabla... The only requirement is that you MUST mention my name and website in any such as product based on my GREAT idea.;-)
"On the other hand, what I see as a bigger issue for companies, is the fact that you probably do not want to store your email on some unrelated big corporation's servers. "
I agree. But there is big amount of low-cost hostings that will move their users to GMail. I think that vast majority of the users will not be alarmed by seeing the GoogleMail logo instead of HostingXY logo. They will probably think "Ooo, Google, I know that brand... and look what a nice features! I love it! And my hosting provider lowered the prices too... Cool!"...
OK, then next step is GoogleHosting;-) (Theoretically the first step is already here: google base)... and then we can use the name GoogleNet instead of Internet...
Funny. They know what I'm interested in (search history, their google analytics,...), they do read my e-mails so they know my friends that write me, friends or customers that search for me, they know my girlfriends, they decide what users visits my websites... Hey, maybe it is not so funny!
Tyrans that threat the democratic and free world needs high-technologies to preserve their power. . Tyrans are hiring american high-tech companies to preserve their power. . American companies are getting lot of money from this contracts. . American taxation system is getting lot of money from high-tech companies. . American soldiers are paid from high-tech companies' taxes to die in the war against tyrans.
Conclusion: 1. Tyrans are paying the american soldiers to die in name of freedom and democracy 2. Tyrans are paying to enemies (americans) because they need the enemies to help them fight other enemies. 3. The only benefit goes on behalf of american companies because:
- soldiers must increasingly risk their lives = no benefit
- tyrans are paying thier enemies = no long term benefit
You have very nice dream and you don't have enough resources (intellectual or simply time) to make your dream come true without helping hand. I'm having a special scribbling block for this kind of ideas. Now I'm at the great idea #195 (not kidding) and I know that 95% will never come true because I have limited resources so I need to choose only the brightest ideas. I hope that your Idea is one of that 5% sort.
What you think that people remember from your short article? I'm afraid that 99% of them remember only "method of making money" . Because the only information I got is "he wants to have a cool website and he has a plan how to make money from it" .
I learnt that if you have great Idea it is not good to mention word "money" when talking about it. You will gain only attention of swarms of "money-hunters" which is certainly not good for your Dream. You should speak about the project itself and less (or not at all - if the project is interesting enough itself) about the benefits coming from it. Do you want the people to be interested in benefits or in your surely cool project?
My guess is that all people that you just attracted will help you only share the profit so the best way is to look among your friends or friends of friends to find the right people that will share your idea (and not only profit).

Bet now, who's going to win?
Why to limit data transfer? They can include the number of hits/transfered data in the pageRank, right? So why to forbid such as valuable pageRank factor?
6 95299 ! And please! Do not rename the Internet to GoogleNet - that was a joke too! :-O
BTW Does the Google monitors the slashdot on regular basis? If yes, so hey guys! I was just joking saying that the next thing is GoogleHosting - http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=177070&cid=14
"The study also said that companies from a variety of sectors in the economy continue to discover greater efficiency and more competitive operations through investment in IT."
;-)
"outsourcing has actually helped our economy and provided new employment opportunities"
1+1=2, "great efficiency" means that there are being sacked people in other then IT depratments because IT department helps to be "more effecient"...
So does it mean that there are more _IT_ employment opportunities and less overall employement opportunities? (Author of this note is not an econimist...
"This is simply the way technology works."
... Can you imagine that anytime the Windows goes in screen saver mode there is a RSS/Atom subsystem that hits your website regularly just to display some pictures taken from your web on the user's monitor when he/she is off for the launch? :-) I don't know but it might be a REAL problem in the future. I hope that the speed of Internet connections will keep aligned with increasing demands...
If you watched what the Microsoft is ready to do then I'm afraid that your PC is going to download not only "news" but also feeds with pictures, MP3s, videos,
Yes CVS or Subversion is a good choice.
If you are interested in PHP coding it is the best to get stick with some existing PHP platform or system that already solved this or is going to solve it: Zend collaboration or PEAR
or... any existing CMS like Mamboo or...
I was maintaining my own libraries for years but I found it very difficult and ineffective because of the way I did it.
Every project was slightly different so I ended up reinventing (or breaking and fixing and enhancing) the wheel over and over...
Sure, the low-level functions can be reused easily without any changes but higher
level functions that has more complicated logic are difficult to reuse in different systems which are often based
on different processing logic (and went through different historical evolution)...
I realized that maintaining separated snippets of libraries is very ineffective so I decided to write Elixon Platform
which helps me to organize existing libraries and still keep the same intercommunication and logic and
coding style intact because it is still one Platform.
So my advise is: try to avoid looking at the libraries as at "stand-alone independent snippets" and try to integrate
all libraries under one umbrella while keeping them modular and as much independent as possible.
It is not clear from the article what happened.
...) then it may limit you from goin on full...
If there is any problem in the team (communication, rivality, weak team member,
There can be many other reasons then technology, that is all wanted to say...
OR... Does it mean that they will delete your files permanently but before deleting they will rip-off all information they are intersted in?
Deleting your files does not mean that there are no information extracted from that files, right?
By opposite look: is it worth to play Q3 with strong desktop-like video card on the screen 3x3 inches wide? Is it worth?
:-) Honestly if you have some nice demountable construction with magnifier that you can attach to your mobile then you can achieve twice as big mobile phone display!
;-)
I would advise the mobile manufacturers to sell a huge magnifier together with their phones...
Buy your own: Nokia 3231, 5MPixel photos + 10xMagnifier, Q3 for free!
I hope that Nokia will not patent it, so:
LICENSE: I grant this idea to public for free. You can do whatever you want to do with it, I will not demand any fees or whatsoever... blablabla... The only requirement is that you MUST mention my name and website in any such as product based on my GREAT idea.
"On the other hand, what I see as a bigger issue for companies, is the fact that you probably do not want to store your email on some unrelated big corporation's servers.
;-) (Theoretically the first step is already here: google base)... and then we can use the name GoogleNet instead of Internet...
...), they do read my e-mails so they know my friends that write me, friends or customers that search for me, they know my girlfriends, they decide what users visits my websites... Hey, maybe it is not so funny!
"
Cool!"...
OK, then next step is GoogleHosting
Funny. They know what I'm interested in (search history, their google analytics,
I don't understand it:
Tyrans that threat the democratic and free world needs high-technologies
to preserve their power.
.
Tyrans are hiring american high-tech companies to preserve their power.
.
American companies are getting lot of money from this contracts.
.
American taxation system is getting lot of money from high-tech companies.
.
American soldiers are paid from high-tech companies' taxes to die in the
war against tyrans.
Conclusion:
1.
Tyrans are paying the american soldiers to die in name of
freedom and democracy
2.
Tyrans are paying to enemies (americans) because they need the enemies
to help them fight other enemies.
