Internet Explorer will be like so many of the 'new economy' companies. Their product is free which will hopefully give them a large market share after which they can charge money for it. IE does have an advantage though, they already have a huge marketshare. The name is also very well established.
Internet Explorer (the company) will probably be able to use their marketshare by including banners in their product. Another way for it to make money would be to sell some of their technology to other companies. Or sell customizable browser components. Yes, of course, Mozilla also offers that for free, but many people will still go for IE because of the name.
Of course this is all a pretty thin layer to build a company on. However, if IE's stock price is high enough they can start buying classic companies. My guess is that IE will try to buy a 'old economy' company as soon as possible.
Okay, I agree it looks really cool and nifty, but what's the use. If I want to have hyperlinks in my newspaper why can't they just put www.newspaper.com/weather instead of some stupid bar code? Sure it is a little more trouble, but not too much more trouble than firing up my pc just to check on some link in the paper. Besides it would save me the money for one of them barcode scanners.
This is sooo handy! Finally, I can put a screen in every room in my house. Now I just wish that they I could hook up multiple keyboards (with really long wires). Then I could really use my computer in the bathroom or the kitchen. I guess I will have to stick with watching the screensaver for now.
So they offered faked kiddie porn? I wonder how they faked them. Did they just use small grown-ups? Or maybe they used clever photo manipulation tricks. I would almost download the pics just to see for myself, but hey, I kindof like my privacy;-)
Why is everybody so concerned? If every software company made their e-mail programs like Outlook this world would be a better place. Everybody would receive messages all day, telling them how much people love them! Now seriously, that's not a bad thing, is it?
Microsoft's bundling of IE with Windows was illegal because of Microsoft's monopoly. Windows has such a large market share that bundling IE was unfair competition to Netscape. KDE can hardly be considered a monopoly so bundling Konquerer with it is not really a threat to other companies.
It doesn't matter whether Mitnick is a criminal or not. It also doesn't matter whether he makes money out of this or not. The point is that the US government violates the right to free speech.
I do see the need for intervention in some cases. For instance, right-extremist speeches are IMHO a good thing to forbid. In general when speeches are offending I can see why people would want to forbid them.
However, this action is directly against Mitnick not against the things he's saying. I don't mind a carthief giving lectures on beer or books. I don't even mind him writing books on cars. I would mind him stealing my car, but that's something entirely different. He should get punished for that, but it's no reason to forbid his book.
I don't think the government finds Mitnick's speeches offending, so there's no reason to forbid them. The fact that they do should scare everybody who cares about his freedom.
