Back in the 1980s we did everything on the live network at Cable & Wireless -- of course, the company no longer exists in the United States, but I'm sure there's no connection there. I remember chewing out the Vice President big-time -- didn't get fired, but didn't change anything either...
Currently researching an Arduino-based 'cruise control' for my manual transmission car using a stepper motor instead of the usual vacuum system. -- gives me something different to think about when I'm not writing document manipulation code.
Not only that, but Mary Doria Russell described music based on DNA years ago in her 1998 "Children of God" -- great sequel to "The Sparrow" if you haven't read them.
My system has a 60g hard drive -- I bought it with Windoz XP professional and promptly re-installed with three partitions of 20g each. I installed breezy badger (then the current version) and used the third partition as mp3 storage for a while until I got organized.
Now each time I decide to try a new system I use that third 20g partition for the latest effort -- edgy Eft installed over the weekend with no hassles, I temporarily pointed my data directories back to the previous installation (now Dapper Drake) ran Automatix2, again with no issues except it wasn't successful on the additional true-type fonts.
Point being that I never lose an installation until I'm ready to make the final switch. -- Your mileage may vary...
Yes, we're messing up our only home, but CO2 levels have fluctuated widely - The hydrogen sulfide explanation for species die-off that I read here recently is a good cross-link.
Initially I was devastated that my favorite start page was dropped without any advance notice. Funny how we get used to something even though the limitations drive us nuts. Oh well...
I thought it was "Those who can't teach, teach others how to teach." -- certainly seemed that way when I was going to state teachers college back in the late 50s early 60s...

Vision Repair -- Doesn't help Blind from Birth yet
on
Nanotech and the Blind
·
· Score: 1
As I understand it (definite layman here) people who are blind from birth never develop the capacity to process visual information. It will be interesting to see if a mouse or human who has been blind from birth can develop useful sight.
History: Logicon (1981) through UUNet, which was subsumed by WorldCon -- I'll be 65 in March and am now a contractor through the National Older Workers Career Center (NOWCC.org) -- pay ain't great, but it's been steady for 2+ years, hope, hope;)

If you squint at the graph just a little it looks like Darth Vader :)

The focus was on security rather than data storage, but I'm sure I read about it on slashdot...
