Here's the thing that's always bugged me about the knee-jerk reaction to "brains controlling computers" thing: everyone assumes that the computers can control the brains.
Can a mouse control your hand? No. Can a racing petal control your foot? No. Can a computer programmed to interpret your brain waves control your brain? No. It's an INPUT device, not an output device.
Tell you what. The day that a hacker makes real with the "Your monitor is now a camera, look at the monkey" joke, then I'll worry about my brain-controlled computer uploading newdotnet into my head.
Oh, and on a side note, for those of you who are worried that you'll be beaten by CS opponents who are moving at the speed of thought, I ask you to concider just how fast the average CS d00d actually thinks.
It is the decision of Lycos Management to immediately and indefinately suspend the Anti-Spam Screensaver project. We would like to thank you for your participation and support.
We would also like to inform you that in order to pay for the plethora of legal costs that are sure to come, the e-mail address you provided upon Registration will be sold to as many interested third parties as we can find.
Surely most Hosting sites have a TOS which forbids sure nefarious activity. Surely then THEY are turning a blind eye to this activity but when it affects their performance they bitch to the ones who are getting revenge instead of simply cleaning up their users and abusers.
Do you really think a bunch of ISPs are going to ban over 100,000 users, on barely provable reasons? Keep in mind, each user sent out less data each day than the average grandmother in a week. So, really, it didn't hurt the ISP's bandwidth all that much. And they (the ISPs) still want their $40 a month from their cutomers.
Now there's enough traffic out there to DDoS it. Networks are usually "congested" at 60%. 60% of 35 is 21. That means another 21% if "all traffic" is being used up.
~56% of the Internet is being used both for and against Bittorrent.
So we only have 4% of the Internet left before it, too, becomes congested?
I wonder how much of that 4%/. gets allocated? Although, if there are no websites left to/., will getting/.'d even matter anymore?
DOS'ing a machine without written consent actually gets you jailtime
Two comments:
1) Since they've sent me a spam, they've already invited me to visit their site.
2) If they haven't, how exactly do you get permission to DDoS a machine? Send the company a letter saying "Dear Sir/Ma'am. Do you like the smell of server-slag? Well, then, do I have a proposition for you..."
Unless the Jeopardy folks wanted to drive him out. It's just a matter of constructing two boards from catagories that are Ken's weak points. After 74 episodes, they'd surely know what subjects those would be.
That, or the satillite that beams answers directly into his brain malfunctioned.
What is to stop the spammers from doing a reverse DDOS on you?
It's easy to DDoS one target by hitting it with 100,000 screensaver zombies. It isn't as easy for that one target to turn around and DDoS 100,000 targets in return. Especially when they're being DDoS'd by 100,000 targets...
OMFG, I've only been saying folks should be doing this years now.
Although, it would have been nice if someone OTHER than Lycos had come up with the idea.
It blows more when one network executive decides what millions of people can't watch. {sniff} I miss Firefly.

Well, since I'm reading this story on the Internet rather than watching it on TV...
Thanks for overreacting, though. It's always helpful to hear swearing in a discussion. Makes it legitimate.

They didn't use it themselves.
They fully disclosed to users the functions of this screen saver.
The users intentionally downloaded it, agreed to the terms, and knowingly ran it.
I'd think blaming Lycos is legally dubious, at best.
Yeah... but Lycos handpicked the targets.
Wow. I got a 5 score and a 0 score in the same article. Maybe it's just the newb in me, but I'm kinda impressed.

I knew I shouldn't have installed that new screensaver from the MPAA.

... would be if they ALSO sued the US Postal Service . How many bootlegged Metallica tracks did they aid and abet?
