Maybe. I think there's a thread of truth in there, but one thing I can say for sure: Microsoft hates software piracy and they will never -- at least officially -- admit that that version was leaked on purpose. And maybe even it wasn't.

Relax. Your poast was probably not totally trollish, but definitely flamebait. (Yes, I distinguish the two.) Basically you came off as a yet another Linux zealot beating on Microsoft about Vista and Windows 7.

Keep in mind that while Linux distros may run fine with 1 GB of RAM or less, start adding stuff that runs all the time you'll be needing more just like on Vista.

While I'm a bit of Linux fanboy myself, I do tend to take a more ecumenical approach and I do realize that there are folks on here that need or prefer to use Windows. (And even as a fanboy, I admit there are things I need Windows -- for instance, some of the software I write needs to be able to run on Windows and POSIX platforms equally well.) And that's okay. Life is full of choices. Just because someone might not agree with your choices doesn't mean they're stupid.

I definitely wouldn't expect 32-bit drivers, so if you need to a device that doesn't have a 64-bit driver, you're a bit screwed, but other than that, you should be fine, right?

I don't know exactly how it works, but COA/OEM licenses of Windows may not be allowed to be installed in a VM.

I don't know about the EULAs for OEM VLK licenses, but if you have an OEM licensed copy from a manufacturer like Dell, the product key is tied to and stored in the BIOS. Meaning that the OEM copy will not work in a VM.

Corporate edition CDs work just fine. Its an open question whether or not a legitmately licensed copy of XP or Vista from Dell can be run with, say, a corporate license key, running in a VM on the same machine the OS is licensed for. I don't know what the legalities are, but this is exactly what I do and Microsoft can go fsck themselves they think I'm going to purchase a retail copy just to run an OS I already legitimately paid for in a VM on the physical machine that it was purchased for.

  9. Re:Will it fly? on Dell Selling Dual-Boot Laptops · · Score: 5, Insightful

That'll change. 64-bit OSes are now mainstream -- and even VMs are becoming mainstream -- so it's only a matter of time before chipset and mobo manufacturers push the limits of more and more of their consumer-grade commodity stuff beyond the previous '4GB barrier'.

That anyone even has to ask this is a perfect example of what is wrong with the country. The
answer is, first of all that Democracy requires the people to be educated. And then, this educated
electorate is supposed to think about who would be the best person for the office, rather than the person they'd vote for in an actual contest of "popularity".

Thanks for that. I started to say all that in my post, but then I figured "Nah, this is Slashdot. These guys know all that. An oblique reference will do just fine."

Yeah, I know. I must be new here.

Anyway, to add to what you're saying and tie everything I said and you said back together: most people in this country aren't educated enough to vote for a president. A lot of people voted for Barack Obama simply because he's black or a because he's hipster. *(see below) There are many people who actually still think that Obama is a Muslim and many who are equally unaware of his Harvard education. On the flip side of that coin, there are many people who think John McCain has always taken a hard-line neo-con stance, completely unaware of his previous record as a centrist and a party maverick.

Most people don't pay attention enough to elect a president. They vote based on superficial BS.

    * Note: I voted for Barack Obama, not because he was black, but because I thought his level of education and background as a community organizer actually made him the most qualified candidate for the position.

Correct. In fact, it seems to me that the purpose of the electoral college -- as framed in the Constitution with each elector picking two candidates -- was so that the electors would never end up be able to pick a clear winner. It's like they were almost hoping for a deadlock so that the vote would go to Congress most of the time.

The presidential election has become a popularity contest today, and removing the electoral college would just make it even more so.

Anyway, I've had the exact same truck here and there and I haven't noticed any significant difference in gas mileage -- and I track it using my trip odometer. In fact, if you think about it, the greater the number of different functions a filesystem driver uses, the less functionality it needs to have within itself. I also don't think the number of external calls is a significant measure of anything related to the size or performance, really. It all depends on what calls are being made and for what purpose.

If anything, as you imply, it's a measure of complexity. But even that might not really be the case if you stop and think about it. As more stuff is abstracted out, the less code goes into the filesystem code, the simpler, really, not more complex that filesystem driver becomes.

I think this was a really poor choice of metric and that almost renders this entire article moot.

Bottom line: If you want to do real research, you need to go to primary sources. Calling something from Der Spiegel an authoritative citation is like calling something from The National Enquirer or Vogue an authoritative citation. Maybe the problem is that the Wikipedia editors think Der Spiegel is an authoritative source.
