  1. Re:Foreman conflicted interests? on Apple v. Samsung Jurors Speak, Skipped Prior Art For "Bogging Us Down" · · Score: 5, Interesting

So.... this guy patented putting a wireless keyboard and SD card slot on a cable box? Wow, no wonder things shook out the way they did.

  2. A more important question... on First Steps With the Raspberry Pi · · Score: 1

As a resident of the USA, how can I get one of these things? Everything I've seen up to this point just talks about how to order one if you're in the UK. Are there no other options apart from paying to have one shipped internationally?

Thank goodness for Slashdot's comment moderation system, now I don't have to read the thousands of "felt it" me-too posts that are rapidly incoming.

  4. Google Sites on Ask Slashdot: Web Site Editing Software For the Long Haul? · · Score: 1

If you were comfortable managing things with iWeb, why not check out Google Sites? It's basically the same thing, only in the Google universe instead of the Apple one, and it's free. You can choose from a ton of pre-built templates just like iWeb, or you can code your own pages if you ever decide you would like to do that. It's pretty widely used so I think it's extremely unlikely that Google will discontinue support for it anytime in the forseeable future.

  5. Re:Thats on Why Google Should Buy the Music Industry · · Score: 1

What does Google know about entertainment promoting? That's what production is now; it isn't just as easy as putting up a ton of music on YouTube, 90% of music promotion is telling people what to like, and Google has shown very little skill at consumer marketing or trendsetting; just because they know how to get millions of people to use free stuff doesn't mean they can figure out how to sell people coolness, hipness or identity. You suggested they market music, and "selling cool" is what marketing music is.

This sounds like a job for Apple!

This post is either one of the most amazing parodies of Slashdot stereotypes ever put together, or very, very sad...

  7. Re:Whoa! on Sony Announces PS3 Slim, Price Cut, Improvements To Home · · Score: 1

I'm going to join the many here in announcing that I would be ready to buy if they included PS2 backward compatibility in that $300 package. Some of the greatest games ever made were for PS2 (Final Fantasy X)

I don't have the room to keep every generation of each console around. When I can play my old games upscaled to HD with wireless controllers will be when the PS3 replaces my old fat PS2 next to the 360.

  8. Re:"protect the interests of customers" on Windows 7 Anti-Piracy Plans · · Score: 1

You're missing the point here. The reason people don't have a problem with consoles is that the DRM isn't intrusive. You buy the games, you play the games. There's no internet connection required for activation, no hoops you have to jump through if you want to play your game on a friend's console, etc.

  9. Re:Actually it's the integration... on Dvorak Avocates Open Sourcing OS X · · Score: 1

I don't think that this laptop lid / sleep mode integration argument is a valid point anymore, if it ever really was. I've had a Sony Vaio since '98 that has terrific power management capabilities, and can easily sleep, hibernate, or power down simply by closing the lid. Now the battery on that Vaio doesn't hold a charge today, but I don't think that's really relevant since it is at least 8 years old.

  10. Re:Almost negligible on Vista Launch Good for Desktop Linux? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't be so sure that the DRM will ever be broken. To my knowledge there still isn't a hack of any sort that can break protected WMA's, such as the kind used by the new Napster service. And no, piping the audio to your computer's "Line-In" either physically or virtually doesn't count.

  11. Re:A bit unfair on Windows Nearly Ready For Desktop Use · · Score: 1

Exactly my biggest gripe with linux. I've got an old Vaio SR-33k ultra-portable laptop that I would love to run Ubuntu on. Unfortunately I'll have to stick with either Win2k or XP since I can't afford to give up features like sound and power management....

  12. Re:they don't get it on Sony takes on iPod Shuffle · · Score: 1

I just don't think that iTunes is the driving factor behind iPod's popularity. Of course I can't vouch for the syncing ability since my music player is a Windows Mobile PDA. Wasn't the iPod still selling like crazy even back when the only option for Windows users was that horrible legacy version of MusicMatch?

  13. Re:How fast are they really? on AMD's New Low-Power CPUs · · Score: 2, Interesting

On the subject of PDA's, I have an iPAQ 2210 (PXA255/400MHz), and it can run XviD videos of varying bitrates at a full 320x240 @ 29.97fps. I imagine the same would be true of DivX. But for some reason, my PDA will not get more than 15fps out of a WMV encoded at any bitrate or resolution. I think that's more a result of shoddy coding than processing power though.
