For some reason, this announcement sounds like political greenwashing. The current voter-initiated ballot proposal to open Florida's energy market up to competition would reduce profits to the state-run monopoly.

    https://www.miamiherald.com/ne...

NOTE: I was actively petitioning for this campaign in Florida for a couple weeks -Floridians all said their energy bills were too expensive, especially when they're seeing relatives in other states with far-lower bills. My water bill in Colorado is 1/10 of a similar residential bill my friend pays in Wisconsin. That last one begs for pause, as Colorado is a semi-arid desert, whereas Wisconsin is right next to the largest fresh water deposit in the world. Seriously, wtf??

  5. I'll offer another film-based analogy:

Dr. Kynes: It's a high efficiency filter and heat exchange system. Perspiration passes through the first layer, and is gathered in the second, Breathing and walking provide the pumping action. ... With a Fremen suit in good working condition, life can be sustained for weeks, even in the deep arctic, sire. With your permission. (motions to Paul)

Dr. Kynes: You've worn a heatsuit before.

    Paul Atreides: No.

Dr. Kynes: Your suit is fitted antarctic fashion. Who told you how to do that?

Paul: No one. It seemed the proper way.

  6. Yet here we are, countries making major, sustained efforts to do something about climate change.

I agree, but that's other countries... It helps immensely if you have incentives from the federal government. Sunset the subsidies given to Big Oil and give them to solar, wind, geothermal, etc. Maybe set up a department of Energy Transition (or sub department of the DOE) to help streamline the switchover that's staffed by professionals and academics (mainly the latter, please) deep in said tech.

It's one thing for states, counties, and their respective cities to take the onus upon themselves to reduce emissions, and it's much slower than a federally-mandated and incentivized roadmap.

Sadly, under Trump, all we've done is go in the other direction... allow more oil exploration/extraction on pristine lands, end tax credits for electric vehicles, etc.

  13. I've always assumed that the real reason to send the sound for external processing is so that it can be stored and analyzed.

Yup, as most people don't remember, Siri was created by an app developer and Apple bought it before the launch of the 4s... My friend had it, loved it, and it didn't need a data connection to do a lot of stuff. Once the 4s came out, it was deleted from his 4. I don't recall if he got a refund.

Apple just wanted the voice data for pure analysis.

You can still control your phone with voice options in accessibility settings to avoid sending your data to Apple via Siri.

On an unrelated note, I think the developers said Siri is an anagram for iSir.

  16. That isn't very surprising, considering Facebook's business model. The biggest benefit of Facebook owning a device in your home is that it provides the company with another data stream for its ad-targeting business.

  17. That's not at all what it is. But it is.

How you can't take their hardware without ruining it, like glued keyboards...and now they want to brick your device for 3-party repairs?? I don't think so!!!

I'm done with Apple. That deal was recently sealed when I bought a used iPhone 6s with iOs11. I asked a friend to see how their Android phone would handle a direct URL to an MP3 file.
