I know the $1,000 per e-mail is supposed to be a deterrent, but no one is ever going to see any real money from this guy. Who keeps the 'spam'? How can they prove they received it once it's gone?
This guy is going to declare bankruptcy as soon as his fine is handed down and the only one who's going to get any of his cash is his lawyer.
I understand the point of the article, and everything else mentioned here. I just think that the amount of time spent eliminating 11k from a program in this case is irrelevant because any real application is going to need libc. It's not like she needed to strip it out so it would fit inside a tiny corner of an embedded processor - she's probably running it on a PC with anywhere from 1GB - 4GB of RAM.
Dude, like, stop being so reasonable - you're gonna park a cloud over our MS bashing and 'I told you so' evangelism. It's not everyday we get to trash MS over a security issue.
So Virtual PC is virtually as secure (or insecure) as a real PC? If you wanted the security of a real PC then they should have, um, well... never mind.
Why spend so much money hooking up rednecks and bible thumpers?
It won't improve their lives one bit, and will just add more retards to the internuts causing retardedness to overflow, which will destroy the world, and probably the solar system.
Blast the outlying areas with our strongest wireless signals (WiFi, WiMax, cellular, etc, etc) and let them each buy the wireless receiver of their choice. It's cheaper to send a wireless signal farther out into these more remote areas than it is a land line.
Let technology and information rain down upon them from the skies.
And if it was Steve Balmer saying the same things we'd be dragging him over the coals and shouting "Developers, Developers, Developers!".
There are as many, if not more, Apple haters as there are fanboys in these parts and the rest of the tech world. They constantly declare Apple failures and berate Apple achievements. It's just unrealistic to blame the failures of competing products on Apple or MS successes.
Open is good, but it's obviously not a requirement for a successful product or company. If it were Apple and MS wouldn't be in the top 5 US companies... and a Linux company would.
Just like the rest of us he can choose to buy, or not buy, an iPhone or any other Apple or non-Apple product.
We're all adults here and if he doesn't like Apple's rules about software of the iPod/iPhone/iPad then he can choose not to get one. It's as simple as that.
The government isn't requiring us all to get iProducts... yet;-)
It's the whole "4 out of 5 doctors..." scenario. Any kid who picks Java will be taken away to be deprogrammed and then reintroduced to programming society once they're ready to be released into the wild.
I think you should pick something that would be the easiest for them to learn. Python is probably the best choice out of those languages (I'm not a Python programer and my exposure to Python has been limited - though I do code in C/C++, PHP & VB and I've coded and taught Java & PASCAL).
You can't really worry about the runtime limit since it should be rather liberal for a student's competition and you'll never know what the system's config will be (so Python may be fast or slow).
If you're going to be teaching new programmers, get them started on something they can use and something they can expand upon. Of the languages available to you I would say Python is the best choice.
He's right... and I'm an iPhone user. It's a great phone (except for the times when it locks up or stutters or otherwise pisses me off), but when compared to the current offerings from MS it's really no contest. The same could be said for the Androids and other 'smart phones' vs. the current MS offerings.
I'm sure that MS's 7 Phone (or whatever it's really called) will bring it up to today's standards & expectations... and into consideration of the business and consumer markets. Until then MS is just passing time in the phone market.
Fair enough - both of them probably would have fought for the American consumer. It's a shame that only two could realistically be suggested to defend the citizens over the corporations. And these two candidates are outliers on our political landscape.
What would we expect from any President? Pick anyone from the last batch, or even the next batch, of candidates. Do you think any one of them wouldn't back big business in this situation?
I try to avoid the rabid advocates who seem to think (or at least they project) that using anything that isn't open source is some kind of affront to the entire open source movement.
Sorry guys 'n gals, but sometimes I need something now and can't wait for it to be included, supported or fixed in an open source solution. My clients aren't patient and don't really care about the necessity for creating an equal playing field for all software developers.
I wonder if iCarte has applied for a patent for "RFiD accessory for iPhone with lowercase 'i' in name"? (I know, I know, but the USPTO is pretty accommodating these days) If so, will try to sue the guy in London for 'rolling his own'? That may fund their next round of marketing smoke.
I am sure we will see some type of oppressive censorship in the relatively near future. Anyone that does not believe this probably is not paying attention to who is in control of the various governments within the United States.
That's crap. The US government is the de facto definition of gridlock, ineffectiveness and partisan pettiness. They wouldn't even agree on a bill to give themselves the winning lottery numbers without bickering, squabbling and turning it into a pissing match. And then they'd anonymously block it, filibuster it and shit can it. If there's one thing the lot of them are missing these days is purpose.

I do hereby second this motion. Can we get a floor vote?
While they do this they're changing people's perception of Google as well ... and not always for the better.
They're doing this with LED's and not LSD?
So, I take it that you won't want to borrow my pair when I get them? I bet they'll make my iPad look even better than my rose colored glasses :-)

An 11k app is not going to make me, or my computer, say 'Good Bye World', so I don't know what the big deal is. "Hello World' != 'Good By Compiler'.
"Most people are worse at math than..." what?
A horse that can count to three with his hoof? Well, it is his left hoof, and we all know left hoofedness is a sign of intelligence.

I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter, but it appears to have been shoved up some guy's ass in goatse #3. I don't want that copy, TYVM.
P-Py-Pyramid scheme? I guess AmWay was beat to the cell phone market by Zer01?
I wonder if my iPhone will be able to get a good enough picture of the giant check I'll get when I finally win the lottery?

If only there was a way to remove humans from the equation ... can you say Skynet?
