Why you might ask, well the laser seems to have a problem with reading the 2nd layer on DVD's.
Hi there. I just got a PS2 and have been quite pleased with the DVD functionality so far. But I am new to DVDs and I don't know what the significance of reading the second layer is. When would I encounter a problem due to this?
how realistic is it to believe that they will create an encryption standard that they don't know how to break
This concern is exactly why AES wasn't developed by the government. It was developed by two researchers in Belgium. NIST basically ratified the existing Rijndael cipher as "good enough to be the standard."
The website linked in the article has lots more info.
Hey, I just got this swell idea: get a silly patent (say, the distribution of interactive data on a network) which could apply to anyone with a webserver.
Then sue the patent office, claiming that their website infringes on your patent!
Readers of Face Intel might have predicted that something like this was just waiting to happen.
That site is full of stories of disgruntled employees who are fired, demoted or reprimanded for trying to innovate or not following the company line. Assuming the stories are true, Intel is in a very sad state internally.
Hey, does anyone else find it interesting that the C:\ drive shown only has 3 directories, one for system resources, another for programs, and a third for data? Kinda like/etc,/bin, and/usr, isn't it? Hmm...

MARCH 18, 2001 - REDMOND, WA (AP) Microsoft unveils new "WinOS X" operating system
The Microsoft project once code-named "Whister" came to light today in a Microsoft press conference at their headquarters in Redmond, Wa. The computer industry was shocked to discover that, rather than continuing the trend of using their "NT" codebase for future OS releases, the core of WinOS X would be a version of the BSD family of operating systems. Gil Bates, project leader for WinOS X, explained the change by saying that "for a business like ours to thrive, one must constantly innovate, or in other words, copy what Apple is doing. Besides, that whole NT thing was really just an April Fools joke that had gotten way out of hand. Sure, we had a few laughs, all the way to the bank in fact, but we decided it was time to get serious."

Hey, you're the one who goes to school with them. Surely you have a whitepages or finger or other sort of command whereby you might find out such things about your classmates.
I'd prefer a system whereby we have the option of either doing research or participating in clinic.
I was confused about your gripe until you made this statement. See, my school, WPI, has a senior-year project as well, called the Major Qualifying Project, or MQP, that every student must complete. (I start mine in a few weeks!) Your clinic sounds very similar to the MQP - a company sponsors it but you get school credit rather than money - but no one complains about it. But now I see the difference - we can do a research project instead, it's totally up in the air.
very easily when it's noticed that someone is trying to download the drivers.

These utilities sound very useful. Could you please post links to their websites?

So they could remake Babylon 5 instead of ST:TOS?
(sorry, I had to)

Main server. Sometimes incredibly slow, e.g. when the "Heise-effect" shows its power.
Apparently we're not the only site that can generate mega-hits!

More importantly, how do we convince companies like ABCNews not to hire these fools?
