One vendor comes up with something, then they all jump in with competing solutions, then a few of them get together get together, carve out a standard, and bring the ISO in, if only to spite the first vendor. 2. battery power DOES matter on netbooks. on 3cell batts (the cheap ones) you get 2-3 hours. on my larger notebook, only the 6cell batt even comes close to that.

my 6cell on my netbook is close to 5hours. find me a notebook that can truly run for that long and I'll agree with you.

if I'm going on a trip (plane) there is NO WAY I'd take a larger notebook over a netbook!

netbooks DO have a reason to exist. they ARE a lot smaller and that often makes enough diff to justify the screen size being so small.

I also worry a lot less about my $175 netbook getting destroyed in travel than my $500+ notebook.

MANY reasons for why netbooks still have a place in the computing world. they're far from dead even though they are getting closer to proper notebooks in cpu power.

The sub-notebook class always seemed a better idea. Prices on the X series Thinkpads are not at all bad, and they used to be LIGHTER, faster, larger screens, than current netbooks (yes, probably 2x the cost after various discounts of course)

As for "so much money", uh $199 is not a lot of money for a new phone with contract -- att and verizon are price comparable.

You know, everyone keeps complaining about all this "control" apple has on the iphone. And now, to read how they are worse than Microsoft.

First, Flash sucks for me as a user so I am thrilled it's going to die. Sorry if a few developers love it, but that's not my problem nor do I care if they have to learn new things. Thank you Apple.

Second, as an iPhone user there is nothing I miss on a daily basis being able to do with the iPhone. Do I wish that there was more flexibility with some apps? Yes. Do I think it's this huge deal, no. Fact is the control Apple is doing has benefits and negatives. For most people the benefits of a closed community, screened apps that haven't had viruses or malware, and a wonderful intuitive GUI (IMHO, Android is getting closer but is still not consistent nor as intuitive as iphone or Palm WebOs) and easy upgrades that actually are released to the phones (as opposed to the fragmentation that's Android) is worthwhile. Fact is Android Droid are STILL waiting for Verizon to let them get 2.1 of Android. How's that for control? If you want control, get yourself an out of contract pay as you go GSM type phone (like the Nokia or somethiing). But for the rest of us people who just need a smartphone and not a portable computer, the iphone is a great device.

Second, "Xp just worked" is hilarious. My goodness, the amount of crap I deal with in XP far exceeds how it is with Windows 7. When I am forced to use XP now that I am used to Windows 7 I can't understand why anyone would voluntarily keep using XP unless Vista were the only option (hehe). Windows 7 has restored my faith that MS can do something right.

    3. Someone writes an application that uses .NET3 - Why can't I run it in Windows 2000?

    See?

I disagree with your examples. In example 2, you can buy a cheap video card to upgrade your computer for compatibility. In example 3 nothing says you can't upgrade to Windows XP. In the article they are saying the devices are made so you can't upgrade android versions at all. So you throw it out and buy a completely new device -- which isn't possible without a new 2 year contract in the USA and if you're not up for a device upgrade you have to shoulder the complete cost.

The manufacturers love Android for exactly the above reason. By having becomes a different OS for each phone, which isn't "upgradeable" they force you to buy new hardware just to be able to run the latest software. This is something Apple really has gotten RIGHT. Thus far, you buy an iphone, and the OS upgrades work on all their devices...
