John, thats a bad solution to a "real" problem. FYI, his neighbors should be using WEP or WAP for wireless security in which case he cannot connect to those networks without knowing the "keys" or hacking.

On the other hand, the open networks (without any security) are dangerous as someone might be sniffing your data and can get hold of your passwords and credit cards or might just enjoy your privacy being violated.

An obvious solution to this problem is Community Mesh Networks. Well thats future, but for now I think upgrading your drivers should alleviate the problem to some extent. Drivers shipped with most APs are pretty darn basic and lack functionalities like tuning the transmission power control etc.

The channels overlap but 802.11 b has 3 orthogonal channels which do not interfere with each other. So thats a solution. Else you could try to increase your AP's Carrier Sense Threshold so that the wireless card on your AP ignores noise coming from apartments a little away.

Or your community can sit down together and agree to reduce their transmission power. I hope they will agree as they should also be facing the same problem.

If they do listen would they care to take some action in this case http://us.rediff.com/news/2005/jan/11bpo.htm. Also read the blog and listen to the mp3. This is what the article says:

An abusive call made by two prominent radio jockeys to a call centre in India has outraged listeners and prompted demands for the duo's resignation.

The live call, made during the Philadelphia-based morning show of RJs Star and Bucwild, ended with one of the RJ's repeatedly calling the female call centre employee a 'bitch' and a 'rat eater' and threatening to choke her.

Star, whose real name is Troi Torain, initiated the call under the pretext of inquiring into an order he had placed for a product known as 'Quick Beads', hair beads marketed primarily to girls outside the black community (Star and Bucwild are black). Midway through the call, Star became aggressive with the call centre representative, Steena.

And its not just about the abusive language! Broadcasting it live for many American listeners will obviously spread hatred for Indians. Such racist activites are the reason why you see some American teenagers burning up Sikh Gas Stations or murdering/assaulting Indians in Night. Will someone take any action?

I am from India so I can talk about my country.

Any of you planning to donate some money? Dollar may be losing ground but it still has 44 times more value than Indian Rupees. So if you donate 100 dollars that means 4400 Indian Rupees (INR). And to give you an idea what this could mean.. a normal meal in India is around 40 INR while cheap clothing is around 100-200 INR. And medicines per day per person won't be more than 100-200 INR. Taking some conservative estimates, your 100 dollars can save an Indian for 10 days till things get under control and one can start living on one's own. Kindly consider donating... Visit my blog http://ritesh.blogspot.com/ and this blog http://tsunamihelp.blogspot.com/ for some info on how/where to donate. Redcross and UNICEF are also accepting donations now.

Yes, he did a stupid thing and ought to be punished. But the media was pronouncing him as if he is the "Porn King" of the country. The clip was anyways making rounds throughout the world and he is not the ONLY one to blame for the misfortune of the girl. Who is to be really blamed for is the 16-yr old girl's 17-yr old boy friend and this boy-friend's friends who forwarded the clip ahead (Now dont say 17 year is an age when you cannot decide whats right/wrong). Thankfully the boy-friend is now caught..

The blame goes more to the Delhi VCD shopkeepers who made the VCDs available in Rs 40 for everyone's pleasure. Why didnt the media tell us the names of those shopkeepers arrested (if at all they were) or the guys who bought the clips from the IIT guy? This shows the double standards of the media who would jump into anything thats spicy and has BIG names (like IIT) associated with it.

    Pure Evil Capitalism?

.... so even Slashdot is added to my list now.

Let me tell you about a different issue arising out of the whole situation.

The IIT student Ravi Raj is still not pronounced guilty! But still the Indian Hypocrite media did what they should never do. They published his name (Nobody knows the names of the guy and girl who had sex), his dad's name, his dad's profession and his home address in headlines! Now my narrow-minded Indian society won't let this guy or his family live easily. This guy even if pronounced not guilty by the court, will not be able to live a clean life in the future. His IIT degree is already taken away, now his career is in shambles.

Oh by the way, almost all IITians see porn in their dorms (they usually have 5% girls in their batch). This guy's only crime was he tried to act over-smart. But shouldn't he be given another chance? For God's sake, he is not a criminal who's whereabouts to be told to the whole world!

Have you heard of the saying - "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"? The point is that such matters are HIGHLY culture-dependent and should not be related to the country being free or democratic or tyranny.
