  1. New customer - possibly new cancellation on TiVo OS Update Adds Content Protection · · Score: 1

Bloody great. I just got my new Humax the day before yesterday and now they pull this crap on me? What is the point of having the machine if I cannot store things???

Thank you, but I already have the LiveCD in front of me, tried it on a nasty old Compaq Deskpro EN P-III. Very impressive hardware detection. I am a UI specialist by education so it was rather exciting to see someone pushing something even remotely radical than another nasty Xerox clone UI...

  3. Re:I'm impressed on Test Driving Linux · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think that is too harsh. Trust me, there need to be MANY MANY MORE simple, straightforward books demystifying Linux. Especially for novice PC users that can hardly use their PCs. And there needs to be a similar effort with Mac users, LiveCDs and books beckoning them away from the trappings of Steve " I MUST OWN THE WORLD" Jobs.

PS does not mean I do not like Linux. I just think SymphonyOS is just the thing to get me fascinated with computers again, after the dissappointment of having Amiga die the grisly death of thousand days. Or something like that anyway.

  5. Switch from XP... on Test Driving Linux · · Score: 1

Tempting, but I am waiting for SymphonyOS to develop more before I spend more Linux time.

  6. Exodus? on Could Apple's Intel Desktop Threaten Linux? · · Score: 1

Is anyone else worried about actual Linux evangelists switching over to OS X? I am a Linux newbie, ex-Amigan, Windows XP user. I have never quite liked Apple's approach to the OS, namely "Apple knows better and the OS will do what it thinks." Probably simplistic but you get the idea. I really really want Linux to succeed, I cannot take another monopoly like M$. Anyhow, anecdotally it seems many Linux power users are getting smitten with OS X. That means fewer power users for Linux and more OS X adopters. We are the ones that will bleed, not Microsoft. And we will bleed possibly in the worst possible place... Please tell me I am paranoid. The only thing scarier than Gates' monopoly is Jobs' monopoly....

  7. Lock down the users, riiiight.... on New iPod Firmware Locks Out RealNetworks Music · · Score: 1

So, remind me why I should buy an overpriced locked down music player such as the iPod. Yes, I know about the design blah blah blah (trust me, I do have some knowledge in human factors) but the device should still do what I want not what I am forced to. And yes I know I can re-record the songs in a vendor neutral format.
