What has really annoyed me now is that all users must download a 100KB javascript file to for richtext editing. Even if they are just looking at the front page.
Not to mention the fact that it doesnt follow the GPL perfectly.. ( the guy once tried to close the source and sell it )
But still Apache (AFAIK) runs mostly on Linux so "pointing out" that in can run on Windows could cause people to move from Linux to Windows and then even to (gasp) IIS. But then maybe i am being a little too paranoid about Microsoft's schemes ?
I dont like excessive microsoft bashing but this artice doesnt seem to do much good for linux. Instead it trys to point to MS being "nice" and show people what they would have to use if MS wasnt there.
Take this for example..
"Device driver support is still an issue for Linux and its users," he said, pointing to the fact that it is still hard for some users to install and upgrade Linux device drivers.
This is just an example of some of the fud mixed into the article. Although some (very few) people have problems with devices on linux it is no worse than Windows 2k/XP SP0. And those ( minor ) problems doesnt need to be brought up.
Many open-source applications, like Apache, now also run on both Windows and Linux, "which is something to bear in mind," he said.
This could cause a lot of deadly accidents if it kicks in when you're trying to quickly move out of the way of an oncoming vehicle or you're passing someone. I hope whoever came up with it is personally liable for any wrongful death cases.
Remember the person who made the system doesnt put in cars. Just because somebody has an idea with some flaws doesnt make them at fault when these (known) flaws kill people. Even then it is the people who make cars that force systems like this upon people.
But still, make sure electronic systems dont kill people. I once had a car alarm go off while doing 100Kph ( 62MPH ). So suddenly the indicators dont work and the engine cuts out. Luckily there was not much trafic and we managed to park the car and reset the alarm.
A funny thought here... in the end MS products will be affected. When they ( MS ) cut their line of AV support for Linux/Unix what happens in the the MS workstations on the other side get the viruses. Arent they just shooting them self in the foot ?
I also find it very simple and easy to use. I havent used Norton for a while but for manual updates ( yes i do know how to turn automiatic updates on it is just that some of my computers arent connected to the internet all week ) i have this memory of at least two screens very nicely shaded (b/g window color ) with nice logos before i could update. But with avg there is the option on the right click menu. Also once it has updated it doesnt tell me ( why should i need to know if it has updated, i told it to so it should do it ) it needs to reboot it just sits there quitely waiting until i reboot.
Then again, I have a tendency to ramble on about shit that doesn't matter, and they don't call you paranoidgeek for no reason do they?
Haha my paranoia here is nothing compared to what i do in a (PHP/MySQL) CMS i am writting.
Nice comments BTW it is nice to see someone on/. that has a discussion about something rather than the "OMG l0l n00b !!" i see too much here.
Or for a fix that doesnt require changing FF rename the file to.zip open and change install.rdf so that <em:minVersion>0.10</em:minVersion> <em:maxVers ion>0.10</em:maxVersion>
is <em:minVersion>0.10</em:minVersion> <em:maxVers ion>1.0.4</em:maxVersion>
I havent read all the comments so i dont know if this has been brought up.
Anyway if M$'s next "big" product ( ie, longhorn ) doesnt make leaps and bounds then will they still be able to have a decent market share ? Many things they have on the drawing board like WinFS and this "Monash shell" would help them bring back their market share but they are delaying them so much that by the time they get out and are tested ( like 1.5 yrs after public release ) then many would have changed the the other options avalible.
The articles listed on the site arent from monkeys but programmers who are given the wrong tools ( VB/ASP seems to be a big one ) and put on the wrong projects ( complex multi user database ) when they have skills in different areas ( small VB apps ) but an interest in some "big" project. So they get creative when they realise although they have no idea how to sort a SQL query they know how to retrive rows one by one.. so they do that... of cause those of us who just go "ORDER BY `something` DESC" would laugh when they write a loop trying every single "something" in order.

My web site's stats are 1-3% MacOS ( all version ). Even that figure is blown up a bit since a couple of webmaster's use Macs.

Really, is this news for nerds ? I have read a few PHRACKs and most of them are just pointers for people with a little skill that wanto be a h4x0r. Really. It should be called "Script kiddy journal" and not make it on the/. front page.
On the same topic show me one properly set up site that has been taken down by a linux worm. Sure a few major site hosted on linux have been atacked by careful attacks but you dont get major outbreaks from worms going all over the net.
Hmm 3 or 4 times.. Hmm well XFree86 has been arround since 1994.. so how do you get 3 or 4 times ? there havent even been 3 years between when linux first came out and when xfree86 was released. Ohh and BTW X.org does not count as a rewrite. And if the windows API is fundementally similar doesnt it scare you that parts of the bad code in win2.0 ( FYI it was a total flop technically ) is still in windows 5.1 ? And even if it is old win apps does run that well on winxp, etc. And you cant recompile them/port them.
Another though.. MS comes out with a "report" saying IIS is better the Apache... a while later MS comes out with "report" that people are moving from Apache to IIS. Am i the only one who see this very basic marketing tactic ?
High end machines (any of those on the Top500) run something other than Windows - often Linux.
I dont think that that is a valid argument because top500 companys need a fast server and a fast OS to get the speed they need.
Telephony, VPN & Dial-up
No dail-up means that it wouldnt work very well for users just wanting an internet connection over 56k. It also means that connecting to remote app servers over a 56k connections. However i dont think MS would be able to get a remote app running ever 56k anyway.
Knowing MS they probably optimized the OS for the benchtest in favor of providing their customers some real world performance
err are you meaning real world performance or real world tests ? The first Microsoft does a good job of ensurring this is good.. but for the second part MS only does it if linux doesnt do well... so no tests at all.
It is more that funny in is just.. sad. Who ever first though of using access as a web database needs to be...... put in a room full of pengiuns dressed as Bill Gates.
An exmample would be with networks.. Win98 need to reboot to change an IP address while the only time i have had to reboot XP due to network issues was to change the network workgroup. I know i dont do that very often but to have to reboot 3 computers ( think of it as 3 reboots ) just to change the workgroup to a common name is just silly. Esp since samba, etc only need "/etc/init.d/samba restart" to change stuff like that.

OK i have kinda put my foot in my mouth here ...

Anyway i am definitely not comfortable managing a Windows system if it is often targeted by attackers.

Well.. not really becuase we dont know whether or not version '99.99.99' will still be compatible with this extension.

The site is running IIS/6.0. (obviously) Does this mean that it hard to patch Windows/IIS ?
