It is interesting to note that while the gender gap in engineering and mathematics still favours men, every other program has a higher level of women than men in Canada, including an 80-20 split in the arts. When people are no longer silenced when they talk about a gender gap in the other direction I will believe that these people are actually fighting for equality, and believe me I have been silenced many times for talking about the gaps in arts and science. In Canada, 70% of all undergraduate degrees go to women, that's fair, equality isn't about a 50-50 split, it's about anyone who wants to work for something being able to with no barriers to entry.
Except of course for engineering calculus where assignments are worth 60% of your final mark, are entirely application and 75% of the final is taken verbatim from the assignments which have answers on the course website and you get a cheat sheet. If you think that doesn't happen it has every term at the University of Waterloo, the #1 engineering school in Canada. Also if you fail any courses it doesn't matter so long as you have a 60% CAV, the lowest drop out point for any honours program at UW. As if that is not easy enough already. Inflated averages are why engineers are in high demand after university and the fact that they tend to hire in their own group because of misplaced pride.
This is unfortunately an issue which cannot be resolved since the bias that has been formed through years of media conditioning forces us to repeat the same ill-mannered responses which could be predicted by any sane-minded individual. It is important to note that all that matters in this instance is the science. This may sound strange to many but the study is the science the conclusion is the interpretation that the media manufactures to demonize the study. It is important to remember that all the study can do is provide numbers and note the "statistical" significance of the measured response variates, nothing more. If you are not satisfied with the fact that the "average" female scores below the "average" male on these tests then you have your own personal problems to deal with and you must realize that this is a generalization of epic proportions and it is not meant to be taken personally. Please stop placing yourself as a member of some gender group and remember that you are first and foremost a human with all of the same rights and amenities granted to any other human, no more and no less.
People with CS degrees get jobs writing software for money because, unfortunately for the rest of the world, software engineers blindly play with mathematical tools which they do not understand. Fantastic, you know how to take two algorithms you don't understand and glue them together as per the template pattern or create objects with a factory, the real problem arises when you have to design an algorithm which requires more than a for-loop and some arithmetic. Read some Dijkstra if you don't want to listen to me, he's much more interesting than the GoF especially if you ever want to write something more thought provoking than an inventory management system or a porn dialer. Go ahead and write $12 shareware for the rest of your life, I'll happily be working on theories you'll use time and time again and never be able to understand but pretend to be the expert on.
It's not "okay" to hate Christianity today but it is alright to question the fact that it is still one of the biggest recruiters out there and that it is wrong to let religious zealots push their content on unsuspecting minds. That being said, the story is so subtle that a young mind would not detect the parallels but there are definitely other reasons to speak out against overactive recruitment like people walking up to you on the street and asking you why you don't accept Jesus into your life as though it is absolutely ignorant to make a choice other than the Christian choice.
It is impossible to prove that something "doesn't" exist, that is why we assume existence is false until proven true. If you'd like to continue arguing in this fashion, please prove to me that flying purple pixies do not exist; I'm not saying that they do, what an absurd thought obviously, I am saying that it is impossible to prove that they do not exist that is why it is completely unreasonable to assume that something exists until you can observe it since there are MANY other possible explanations for the supporting evidence for the claim. Find some evidence for the "creator" that doesn't have another explanation and you can have your absolute truth. This all boils down to the fact that in science, people aren't afraid to say I don't know, people aren't afraid to wait for the answer rather than assuming that everything is already shown to be absolutely true by a being that cannot possibly be observed. In science a theory which has no hope of being falsifiable, ie. the existence of something that cannot be observed, is absolutely absurd.
Well of course ((Academics != education) != (real world effectiveness)) is true!!!! Everyone knows that (Academics != education) is 1 and (real world effectiveness) > 1.
Stop abusing C SYNTAX!!! From your friendly syntax nazi.:)
I certainly do not agree with the distruction of the constitution but why is it that everyone is so damn afraid of being unpatriotic? The last time I checked we lived in a democracy so stick up for what you believe in not what the politicians tell you that you believe in.
Why not consider the large number of scholarships offered by my school for in engineering, science and mathematics which I am entirely ineligible for simply because of my gender. When women have access to an additional set of scholarships not available to male students I would indeed call that a sad day for so called gender equality. People seem to be radically missing the point of this whole issue, gender equality is not about a 50-50 split in enrollment or employment, it is about every person being honestly able to say that neither a man nor a woman is uniquely qualified for any particular task simply in virtue of being a member of their gender. If you want equality fight for equal treatment and equal responsibility, fight for my right to be considered on par with any woman who is my judged equal solely on their academic prowess, then I will start believing that we are moving in the right direction. My previous coop employer said something interesting to me, one day she came to my desk to have a chat, on this occasion we were discussing why I got the job, and she said to me that she would have given it to a female student if any had applied. In my education I have been pushed to the side because "boys don't mature as quickly as girls ", which I guess explains the reason my female roommates still act like two year olds having tickle fights every night. My point is that there is a growing bias which is getting stronger not because it is being ignored but because those who speak out are silenced with the cruel shriek chauvinism (and yes chauvinism is not specifically male it specifically denotes anyone who believes in the innate superiority of any group).

This is just yet another example of the way society is moving, the blatant over sensitivity toward everything is getting out of hand. The way that this society has babied its youth has created a generation who could care less about responsibility and as a result are just beginning to show the failures that they we will all one day be privy to. The dropout rate rising significantly and the quality of education for those that stay dropping rapidly, due to the curriculum being "too difficult" for some students to grasp, is breeding lethargy all around us and it is just about time to put a stop to it. Everyone, as a parent, wants their child's life to be better than their own was but for all of our sakes don't just make it easier and exempt the part about the difficulties of life and the responsibility that everyone must face, they are just going to be set up for the biggest let down of their lives.

It's not a flaw it's a feature.
