The way I get around creeping dongleitis, is to have a 3 foot paralell extension cable attached to the back of my box. The dongles attach to the end of the cable, which is stuffed out of the way...
Years ago (early 90's) I started a GURPS space campaign, spent weeks setting up scenario, etc. A week before the game was going to begin, a friend of mine (one of the people that was going to play in the game) hands me "A fire upon the deep" to read. As I started reading, It sounded vaguely familiar. Turns out my scenario for the GURPS game was remarkably close to the plot of the book. QUICK! To the re-write cave, Robin!
I (as a software engineer, not a sysadmin) was in a similar situation in my last round of interviewing. Guy asked some programming problem "How would you fix XYZ" I replied with "By doing ABC then DEF" "Well, think a bit different, what about Y again?" "Er, I suppose I could run LMN on Y and see what it showed" "Right, but if Z got in the way..."
This went on for about 5 minutes, until I figured out he was looking for a SPECIFIC answer, not just a correct answer.
You had a mastadon? We dreamed of mastadons. We had to get up in the morning half an hour before we went to bed, write the entire contents of the Rosetta Stone in twigs in the Sahara desert, in a high wind. Then we worked 29 hours in the slate mines for you namby pamby slate writers, and when we got home, our mum and dad would kill us both with a eagle quill. But you try and tell kids that nowadays, and they dont believe you.
