I also don't see why you'd think SandboxIE would be more secure than Low Rights mode, with LRM the browser is running at lower than even a standard user and with Adblock Plus and the optional Secure DNS that comes with Dragon frankly I haven't seen a single infection on any customer's PCs that use it, in fact all they need me for is hardware upgrades because without having the browser open as an attack vector its pretty damned hard to infect Win 7.
Oh and FYI but if you just absolutely positively have to run FF for some reason I'd argue that using Comodo IceDragon (The Comodo spinoff of FF) with the free Comodo Internet Security would be the better way to go as not only does it sandbox like SandboxIE but it also does scan before load on every webpage and will stop those with malware from even loading.

I haven't tried it with iTunes but I know you can turn services on and off via.bat files so why not just do it that way? You could then just pin it to your start menu, hell you might even be able set it up as a scheduled task triggered on event, I don't know if there is a specific event for plugging in a USB device, probably would have to go to MSDN to find what the trigger is called if there is. I just looked and scheduler does have a "hardware events" category but you'll need the event ID to use it.
Anyway there is always more than 1 way to do anything in Windows but most folks forget about task scheduler and.bat files, both of which are pretty powerful and either one would probably work well for this. Come to think of it you could probably flip it on and off via powershell as well, so that's three.
I moved my users over to Comodo Dragon a couple of years back when it became obvious that FF cared more about bling than security by refusing to implement low rights mode for their browser. Low rights mode would help not just the Windows users but could be integrated with AppArmor if they wanted but the fact is it really looks like Moz don't care, its all about bling and mobile now.
At the end of the day they can't get around the fact that the browser is the single biggest attack vector on any PC and that running the browser in the same level of permissions as the user is just fricking DUMB. best practices should ALWAYS go for the least permissions required to do the task at hand but while Chromium added support for LRM less than 6 months after it came out the fact that its been 6 years and still no LRM in Firefox really is inexcusable.
Just look up the article i wrote in my Journal about the Yahoo porn bug about why running a browser in the same permissions level as the user is a BAD IDEA, its a perfect example of why LRM is an important security feature as that attack does not work on any browser with LRM, even IE, it ONLY works on Firefox because FF has too high a level of permissions. So while I wish the FF users nothing but luck until they have LRM I simply cannot in good conscience recommend using FF.
That is why I mentioned Android and not OpenJDK, because I heard that like Gnash its pretty terrible. I don't know if it has gotten better but i tried both 2 years ago and even a basic java chat client fell down and went boom on OpenJDK, and I couldn't get Gnash to pay a 4 year old VP6 flash video I found.

BTW to any other PC repair guys...are you seeing increased need to use that "refresh my PC" option at your shop? because while the only time I've ever needed to reinstall Win 7 was when a malware infected system came in I'm seeing a LOT of the "refresh your PC" jobs, especially if it has an AMD APU, although I've noticed Intel isn't immune, just less likely. Personally i have a theory that the reason that "refresh my PC" bit was placed in there was because they had a serious file corruption bug they couldn't nail down before RTM, because from what I've been able to see it looks like Win 8 corrupts its own system files over time until you end up with an unbootable mess. They also "learn" from your search history, at least Bing does i never checked with Google, so that if I type "AM" it knows I am looking for AM3+ whereas with someone with a different history would get something completely different for the same term.

Sure you'd THINK it would be browser plugins but try loading up a VM and hitting some malware laden sites and you'll see they'll scan for old versions and if you aren't on a browser that runs in low rights mode, like say Firefox or any browser on XP, then they will do everything they can to trick the user into running a java app and fucking themselves. hell i saw one which downloaded a small 2Mb.jar and then had a webpage yes/no dialog box pop up which was actually how they were getting the java app to run as no matter which you picked you were in reality picking "yes please run this jar file".
At the end of the day there is no getting around the fact that unless Java is kept locked down so that it can only run the one or two programs you need it for? Then its gonna be a risk, no other way to put it. The fact that first Sun and now Oracle are responsible for this mess because of their replace instead of patch just makes it that much worse because as i say with other risky software you can set it for auto-update and be reasonably safe whereas with Java if you leave on auto-update you'll end up with broken apps.
Any way you slice it the situation with Java is fucked up and it really needs to be left in the corporate space where it can be isolated by group policy, not on Joe and Sally's desktop running video games.

There is only 2 types of apts here, the nice ones where even a small apt will cost you a good $4k in fees just to move in (first month, last month, security, etc) and which will cost him $650-$900+ a month and that is figuring a 50-60 mile daily commute, closer and it goes right off the scales.
The other choice? Well look up "bangin in little rock" to see for yourself, there are places here that can easily compete with south central LA on the shit-o-meter and where the cops won't even go in broad daylight without having a show of force.

I haven't tried it with iTunes but I know you can turn services on and off via .bat files so why not just do it that way? You could then just pin it to your start menu, hell you might even be able set it up as a scheduled task triggered on event, I don't know if there is a specific event for plugging in a USB device, probably would have to go to MSDN to find what the trigger is called if there is. I just looked and scheduler does have a "hardware events" category but you'll need the event ID to use it.
Anyway there is always more than 1 way to do anything in Windows but most folks forget about task scheduler and .bat files, both of which are pretty powerful and either one would probably work well for this. Come to think of it you could probably flip it on and off via powershell as well, so that's three.
I moved my users over to Comodo Dragon a couple of years back when it became obvious that FF cared more about bling than security by refusing to implement low rights mode for their browser. Low rights mode would help not just the Windows users but could be integrated with AppArmor if they wanted but the fact is it really looks like Moz don't care, its all about bling and mobile now.
At the end of the day they can't get around the fact that the browser is the single biggest attack vector on any PC and that running the browser in the same level of permissions as the user is just fricking DUMB. best practices should ALWAYS go for the least permissions required to do the task at hand but while Chromium added support for LRM less than 6 months after it came out the fact that its been 6 years and still no LRM in Firefox really is inexcusable.
Just look up the article i wrote in my Journal about the Yahoo porn bug about why running a browser in the same permissions level as the user is a BAD IDEA, its a perfect example of why LRM is an important security feature as that attack does not work on any browser with LRM, even IE, it ONLY works on Firefox because FF has too high a level of permissions. So while I wish the FF users nothing but luck until they have LRM I simply cannot in good conscience recommend using FF.
That is why I mentioned Android and not OpenJDK, because I heard that like Gnash its pretty terrible. I don't know if it has gotten better but i tried both 2 years ago and even a basic java chat client fell down and went boom on OpenJDK, and I couldn't get Gnash to pay a 4 year old VP6 flash video I found.

A word of advice to anybody thinking about it? if you don't already have Win 8 (which if you do, my sympathies) don't bother, its just the same shit as Win 8 with a slightly different name. if you are getting a desktop or laptop just get an OEM copy of Win 7 or go to someplace like Tiger or NewEgg where you can buy a new Win 7 machine, you'll be glad you did. this is the first OS since WinME I'm actively avoiding, its even worse than Vista on the "piss me the fuck off" scale.
BTW to any other PC repair guys...are you seeing increased need to use that "refresh my PC" option at your shop? because while the only time I've ever needed to reinstall Win 7 was when a malware infected system came in I'm seeing a LOT of the "refresh your PC" jobs, especially if it has an AMD APU, although I've noticed Intel isn't immune, just less likely. Personally i have a theory that the reason that "refresh my PC" bit was placed in there was because they had a serious file corruption bug they couldn't nail down before RTM, because from what I've been able to see it looks like Win 8 corrupts its own system files over time until you end up with an unbootable mess. I don't know if its metro and desktop fighting each other, don't know if that shitty "hybrid boot" is causing corruption, all I know is I'll refresh a PC a couple of times before the owner gets sick of the shit and has me install Win 7 and after that? Its all good, purrs like a kitten. So its not a hardware problem, its a Win 8 problem.

As for TFA, now correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I had always heard it autocomplete is simply trying to "guess" based on what is most popular as far as searches goes, so if i type "Li" into Bing (Yes I use Bing, if they are gonna make money off datamining my searches i want my cut and at least Bing gives me gift cards to Amazon which is damned useful for buying all the little stuff I need at the shop) even though I may be looking for "light bulbs" because Lindsey Lohan was trending thanks to some stupid stoner fuckup then she is what autocomplete is gonna bring up when i type "li" at the top. They also "learn" from your search history, at least Bing does i never checked with Google, so that if I type "AM" it knows I am looking for AM3+ whereas with someone with a different history would get something completely different for the same term.
So I really don't see how the Germans expect this to work short of them just banning autocomplete entirely if you are in Germany which would have to suck for the Germans as it really is a useful feature. Sure you'd THINK it would be browser plugins but try loading up a VM and hitting some malware laden sites and you'll see they'll scan for old versions and if you aren't on a browser that runs in low rights mode, like say Firefox or any browser on XP, then they will do everything they can to trick the user into running a java app and fucking themselves. hell i saw one which downloaded a small 2Mb .jar and then had a webpage yes/no dialog box pop up which was actually how they were getting the java app to run as no matter which you picked you were in reality picking "yes please run this jar file".
At the end of the day there is no getting around the fact that unless Java is kept locked down so that it can only run the one or two programs you need it for? Then its gonna be a risk, no other way to put it. The fact that first Sun and now Oracle are responsible for this mess because of their replace instead of patch just makes it that much worse because as i say with other risky software you can set it for auto-update and be reasonably safe whereas with Java if you leave on auto-update you'll end up with broken apps.
Any way you slice it the situation with Java is fucked up and it really needs to be left in the corporate space where it can be isolated by group policy, not on Joe and Sally's desktop running video games.

You can't even compare it to Windows or flash because with both of those you can turn on automatic update and you'll be fine, with java as you pointed out they do NOT patch, they REPLACE and that ends up breaking shit as often as it fixes it so naturally all it takes is java shitting all over an app after update for most folks to learn "Don't update java EVAR" which is how we are in this mess.
If we can't get the damned programmers to use something, ANYTHING other than java then we need an open source replacement, something that will just patch the bugs instead of screwing everything up by replacing. Hell maybe somebody could port the Google version android uses but make it compatible with standard Java apps, I don't know, all I do know is we need something better than fricking Java because down here in the trenches it makes Flash look like Fort Knox by comparison. You can't even get mad at people for turning off updates because their replacing instead of patching just leaves you with broken apps so its either leave their asses hanging in the breeze or give up on running anything that uses java. While that would be fine by me I have a feeling all the casual gamers won't let that happen.
Dude it ain't just FLA, I have lived in most of the south and parts of the midwest and the buses which only run in the state capital in nearly all the flyover states only go "from welcome to the jungle to the mall and back". In my home state the ONLY public transport is in the capital and it ONLY runs during daylight hours and it goes between MLK and the malls, that's it. And people can scream racist but no white guy is living on MLK, hell the cops won't go there after dark without dozens of them and choppers.
So that other guy can give us his "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" bullshit all he wants because that is what it is, bullshit. The 18-24 demographic is looking at 30%+ unemployment in a lot of places, no place hires full time anymore so they don't have to worry about benefits or overtime, and with gas at $3.36 a gallon here there is no way in hell he could afford the daily 120 mile round trip to work and go to school in the state capital.
And before anybody says "Well he should just move closer to the capital then" yeah...good luck with that. There is only 2 types of apts here, the nice ones where even a small apt will cost you a good $4k in fees just to move in (first month, last month, security, etc) and which will cost him $650-$900+ a month and that is figuring a 50-60 mile daily commute, closer and it goes right off the scales.
The other choice? Well look up "bangin in little rock" to see for yourself, there are places here that can easily compete with south central LA on the shit-o-meter and where the cops won't even go in broad daylight without having a show of force.
