I could hack the reg and have it tell you its doing The Hustle, does that mean its doing The Hustle? Of course not. MSFT needed a selling bullet point and it got it by doing a hack on the boot sequence, that's all. Again MSFT bragged for years about how fast MS Office started up while neglecting to mention it had a service called OSA running that preloaded it into RAM so if they lied to you once why do you think they'd tell the truth now?
I'm at the shop and about to greet another customer but Google is your friend, look up something like "Windows 8 boot really hibernate" or a variation thereof and you'll find the info. It puts the kernel in a hibernate file and keeps the userland in RAM....where did I see something similar? Oh yeah, on win 7 that's called "hybrid sleep" and is crazy fast as well.
Ever hear of an "example" friend? They want to make sure the next Assange shits himself in fear at the thought of opening his mouth, even if he gets handed the most damning documents evar. If Assange doesn't suffer publically it might embolden those who know more dirt on those in power to come forward and others to publish and that simply won't be allowed.
They don't care what it costs, what the USA looks like, there is too much dirty dealing between Wall Streeet, the MIC and PMCs and the USA gov to allow anyone to think they can open their mouth or publish shit without getting a Gitmo ride.
Sleep deprivation, tied in a straight jacket, pumped full of drugs...naaah, that's not tortue. Waterboarding is torture, of course only third world banana republics do something like that, right? And why would Assange be afraid of just getting on a plane right? surely that means he's up to something.
Welcome to the USSA, where the only free men are the rich men.
Sorry but if you think this is about rape? I have some magic beans you may be interested in. Assange asked REPEATEDLY if they wanted him for questioning before he left, they said "No the matter is closed" and then several USA politicians start making noise about how he needed to be put on trial and NOW, now they want him? Oh and one of the "rapes" left him sleeping the sleep of the well fucked in HER bed and then when she left she....bought him breakfast? And screwed him for another week?
To quote Mel brooks "Bullshit bullshit aaaaaannnnddd bullshit". this is about dragging Assange to Gitmo, simple as that. The USA, which frankly is quickly becoming the USSA, wants to make an example of Assange to show anyone else what happens when they open their mouths. if it was about rape then why would they give a shit about waiving extradiction to the USA? because his ass wouldn't have even gotten off the plane, he would have gotten a rendition ride and frankly I'd be amazed if it even sat down in Sweden, most likely it would have been diverted in the air straight to the USA and from there to gitmo.
So I pay MORE money to have a shittier looking desktop so I can have the "thrill" of...doing the exact same damned thing i could do in Vista and 7? Well why didn't ya say so! I'll just open my wallet right now! I mean WTF did I ever do with these beautiful wallpapers of the galaxies, when i can have tile spam and MSFT trying to sell me shit?
Also note that the startup and shutdown tests? LIES all lies. Win 8 does NOT do a full shutdown or normal startup, what it does is similar to hibernate so if one wanted to compare you'd need to use a similar hibernate schema on Win 7 to compare.
But its nothing like a full shutdown or startup so no shit its gonna be faster, no different than how MS Office used that hidden OSA service to run 24/7 and they'd brag about "How fast Office starts". Well no shit it starts fast if the damned thing is running all the time, same kind of cheating here.
But why would we care EXACTLY, unless we believe in the "free as in freedom!" dogma?.Doc works just fine for the millions and millions of people out there with MS Office, and more importantly we don't have to download or mess with shit as it "just works" and does this quite well. I have shared complex docs made with my MS Office 2K with users of Office 2K3, 2K7 and 2K6 for Mac and NO problems, in fact the only problem we had was one guy insisted on trying to work in Open office and it kept trashing the formatting. We finally broke down and gave his butt a copy of 2K3 and it was all gravy.
The only ones other than the FOSS followers that would or should give a crap is governments and that is ONLY because they often have docs that end up being so old if it were printed it would probably come out covered in dust. Everybody else? Our docs are not gonna last more than a few years tops and a good 80% of what we send won't even last longer than a quarter. So why should we care? what does your format offer us? again don't care about FOSS, so you'll have to come up with a better selling point.
Windows 7 comes with a paid for H.264 codec while XP, and Linux? Do NOT. And yet again you are mistaking HARDWARE FOR software. dxva AND va-api are simple APIs but do NOT, I repeat do NOT give you the H.264 codec.
Go look it up yourself on the Moz blog, just type in H.264 and you'll find the posts which will tell you the same thing i just did, no codec? No play. And MPEG-LA charges for being able to play H.264 in your device or OS, hence why MSFT had to pay up.
Now now lets be fair...it does work on touchscreens, oh and little bitty screens like netbooks. So right there you got....what? 4% of the market that will actually enjoy Windows 8?
Trying it on my 22 inch though was just fucking PAINFUL. I mean WTF were they thinking making every damned thing full screen? And what moron decided TIFKAM (The Interface Formerly Known As Metro) should put every God damned shortcut in a fucking tile? do you have ANY idea how many damned tiles you end up with if you actually install a decent amount of software on it? It looks like a fricking shotgun blasted icons all over the damned screen! Hell it looks worse than those PCs i have to deal with where the user just dumps everything on the damned desktop because at least there you CAN quickly make a folder or two and clean that shit up.
So here is a totally 100% unbiased review of TIFKAM and Win 8...If you have a little netbook, say 10 to 12 inches? Then its fine as you'll never do more than 1 thing at a time on a screen that small anyway. Do you have a small touchscreen device? Works there too. do you only use one program at a time and ALWAYS go full screen? Well then its fine. Only install a couple of programs at most? Then TIFKAM won't drive you up a wall.
Everyone else that doesn't fit in the above list? RUN. Run as fast as you can, grab you a copy of Win 7 and hold onto it like a fat lady grabbing the last chicken wing at the buffet table because TIFKAM will make you want to pull an Elvis on your PC.
Yeah...enjoy your trip to Gitmo friend. In case you missed the memo the rich and powerful? They don't have to play by our rules, just the filthy peasants have to abide by those. Did you see anybody bust the Bush daughters when they went on national TV and talked about burning mix CDs for their family and friends? Of course not because those laws are for OTHER people, not the rich and powerful.
Sorry that license covers HARDWARE and NOT SOFTWARE, should have read the fine print. That was why both Nvidia and ATI have the hardware but don't provide jack shit for accessing the hardware anymore, license fees. This is also why Moz won't support H.264 on Linux, MSFT paid the $699 license fee to put the codec in win 7 and 8 and Linux distros didn't.
Don't believe me, feel free to contact MPEG-LA, they have a contact page and I'm sure they'll be happy to send you a price list for implementing H.264 access in software. Of course MPEG-LA has yet to offer a license that allows redistribution beyond a single customer, so no support for FOSS, sorry. I guess FOSS doesn't really need web video anyway, right?
Thanks, nice to see that I'm not the only one going WTF when it comes to HTML V5. its like going back in time to 1995, where you needed a bunch of different codecs just to see an average webpage. And can they make HTML V5 suck a few more cycles? I can take a 1.8GHz Sempron from 2004 and play SD flash just fine, HTML V5? Anything less than a Core Duo and its a fucking slideshow.
As I said I'll be the first to admit Flash wasn't great but it DID work, and it worked without sucking cycles, making you replace all your gear, or making you pay your $699 license fee because Adobe took care of that. Now you'll either get bent over by Apple & MSFT or by Google, but either way THEY will be in control, not you. And both sides don't seem to give a rat's ass about bandwidth or vector animation so say goodbye to your little games and i hope like hell you got plenty of cash for the overage charges.
Yet as you pointed out people fricking cheer for something that isn't even halfway done replacing something that actually works, and worse its something fully controlled by patent trolls and owned by Apple & MSFT, two companies with a history of not playing nice with anybody. Yeah...what could go wrong? You watch, in 5 years guys like you and me will be laughing our asses off as the ones cheering find themselves locked behind paywalls and handed crazy bandwidth bills. When they say "hey this sucks" we'll get to say "Told ya so dumbass!".
And that was...what? 3 or 4 years ago? It hasn't been OO.o since oracle bought it and it forked ages ago and the LO guys are stripping out all the Java even as we speak.
I'll get hate for saying this but I really don't give a fuck, RMS is a nut or as the Brits say "snooker loopy" and while what he did 30 years ago was good frankly he passed batshit a looong time ago. As the head of RH said "RMS treats his friends as his enemies" and frankly RMS is only really good for religious dogma and shit stirring anymore.
I'd say a better take on Linux comes from one of the RH devs who says the current system isn't sustainable for just this reason, you have everyone and everything spread too damned thin and the QA and QC goes right down the shitter. So now instead of ONE product that's behind we have TWO products that are even farther behind...yay. The problem with all this wheel inventing was summed up by XKCD,everyone in FOSS land tries to play it up as a strength but that's bullshit, it just makes sure that every project is half ass and behind the competition because there is never enough manpower to get the job done right...thanks a lot.
Old Alex is a "FOSSie" aka someone who worships at the feet of RMS who can do no wrong and ever since I showed him over a dozen links showing how truly batshit RMS is he has been following me, saying that I'm some sort of "M$ Ninja" sekrectly hired to destroy his precious FOSS.
Kinda sad, but FOSS does seem to attract a lot of nutters and maladjusted so there you go. watch the video and make up your own mind, please don't take my word for it. Right before the 29 crash we had 150% of GDP in the market, we are at 430% GDP and climbing now, that is simply unsustainable, it makes the entire market into Las Vegas East and it WILL fall down, just as it did in 29.
Wikileaks, look up "children sold" and you'll find it quick enough, it was Afghanistan and Kosovo and IIRC the PMC was Blackwater. They sold 10 year old boys in Afghanistan, 11 year old girls in Kosovo, and the American embassy was told "bury it".
I'm at work and fixing to head on a call so don't have time to look it up for you, but the Wiki search should take you right to it, just hope you haven't had lunch when you read what our sick fucking government covered up, it will make you wanna puke.
But if that is all they need...why not LO? this is one of the major problems in FOSS IMHO, all the reinventing the wheel and NIH syndrome. If they would have taken that same effort and invested it in LO think about how much farther it would be? But because LO is NIH we get yet another office suite that is years behind the competition...yay.
Will be actually cheering this. I wonder how long its gonna take to sink in that "Hey we just got rid of one proprietary format....for a patent troll's wet dream, yay us!"
Of course since the late great iSteve was all for H.264 then it HAS to be good...right? He wouldn't have any ulterior motives, like say splitting mobile with MSFT and thus would actually WANT something patented up the wazoo to discourage competition? Naaaahhh..
Sheesh wake the fuck up folks! At least Adobe didn't give a rat's ass where and how you distributed Flash, hell they didn't even bitch about Gnash at all and you trade someone THAT easygoing for a "Pay your $699 license fee you cocksmoking teabaggers!" troll group? Just try distributing H.264 support without cutting a check, just try and see how quick you get a C&D. Look I'll be the first to admit that on anything but windows Flash was badly written, I mean it was by Adobe for God's sake. But you DO NOT replace a pile of shit with a punch in the nuts alright? That is NOT progress!
Uhhh...how EXACTLY are you gonna do that when there is a revolving door between the DC swamp and Wall Street? Why do you think we now have over 400% of our GDP in the market, which is nearly 3 TIMES more than right before the crash of 29? Because they go straight from Wall Street to the halls of power, get laws written that give them moar monies, and then walk right back over to Wall street and reap the rewards.
I'm sorry friend but until the whole thing crashes and we become another Greece or Zimbabwe there is not a damned thing you, me, or anybody else can do about it, the amount of money concentrated into the financial market means they can light bags of money on fire and the government will hand them new bags and pay for someone to clean up the ashes and just hand you the bill.
Uhhh...the US government covered up for a PMC that was SELLING LITTLE KIDS to get better arms deals. Oh and that was the SECOND TIME they had been caught pulling that shit, the first was in Kosovo.
I'm sorry but your right to get on a high horse dies when you cover up for child rapists, the end.
Uhhh...so what? LO and OO.o save in over 2 dozen formats so why should anybody care? Most folks don't NEED to have their files in ODF or OXML, all they need is the person they are sending it to to be able to open it. For those that DO need ODF or OXML I'm sure they'll be smart enough to pull down a single list box and choose it or even go into the settings and set it as default.
If you wanna bitch about the whole ISO mess? Right there with ya pal, and it just shows how useless these "standards" are when they can so easily be bought IMHO. But to bitch that they don't set the default format to be something that nobody but those with the latest version will be able to open? That's just retarded. I've got customers on Office 2K, 2K3, 2K7, and 2K10 and they can all share docs with each other. Switch to OXML as default and that all goes to shit. Most businesses couldn't give a rat's ass about open formats, they just want the doc they sent to be opened easily, that's all.
I don't know about him but MY netbook weighs less than 3 pounds, has a dual core with 8Gb of RAM so all my programs are loaded into RAM and ready to go, has a class 10 SDHC always loaded for Readyboost so that any access to the 320Gb HDD is sped up by having small I/Os come from the SDHC, gets nearly 7 hours playing 720p on a 12 inch screen that is actually enjoyable to watch instead of eyestrain-o-zision, and WiFi is everywhere here so I always have service.
So I'm with him, kinda stupid to spend $500+ on a smartphone or get assraped for 2 years on a plan when I already have a netbook with more of everything than any smartphone. Oh and while everyone else plays Angry Birds I can play L4D and GTA:VC, although I learned not to play GTA or Saints Row in the doctor's office thanks to all the backseat drivers. I swear if I hear one more time "The cops are gaining! You better get to a safe house!" I'm gonna smack somebody.
Well if you are doing large copy jobs you'd probably want Xyplorer over Extreme as Xyplorer has the option to do file verification and you can set the network speed so a large copy job doesn't slow everything else down to a crawl.
Ya see, this is the thing I learned about Windows years ago: Windows is great OOTB for Joe and Jane Average. Its defaults are simple enough and hand holding enough it covers nearly all their use cases with a minimum of third party software. But if you are doing real work or want real control over the system the default tools in Windows just don't cut the mustard, you really have to go third party.
With third party frankly you can have all the Windows software without putting up with brain dead UI choices. There is AstonShell if you don't like the Windows shell, that will give you dozens of shells to choose from, from KDE and GNOME like to Win9x and Mac, third party file managers give you more power and control over those tasks you do everyday, I've found Windows is just as customizable as Linux, you just have to use third party tools to do it.
So give 'em a spin, I'm pretty sure every tool I named has a free trial so you can see if it does what you need it to. No point in putting up with stupid choices in Windows design if you don't gotta, and with tools like AstonShell and Xyplorer you really don't gotta.
Not to mention the moron wanted to use tape for BITTORRENT which is about the stupidest damned idea I've ever heard. if there is ANY process that is random access it is BT and tape, no matter how you slice it, simply isn't designed for the type of random access that BT uses.
Sadly it just shows how the level of tech knowledge has gone down here at/. because even 5 years ago this wouldn't have even been discussed, it would have had a single "Are you shitting me?" as first post and that would have been it. Tape is an archival long term storage format NOT a random access day to day storage format. The fact that so many are simply looking at the space on the tapes while not understanding its about as different as 8-tracks to SSDs when it comes to seek times just shows they don't understand the tech, like my customers who want to know why that laptop with 1Gb of RAM is slow "when I got 200Gb of memory in it!".
Its just not made for what the guy wants to do and the cost of jury rigging something that would even half ass give him what he wants would be a couple of dozen times more expensive than simply picking up a 4Tb NAS and calling it a day, end of story.
Uhhhh...but its REALLY dumb. WTF is the point of using a chip designed for battery life as your home console or desktop? the answer is no reason, no reason at all.
People do NOT want their smartphone to be all things but what they DO want is their information to be everywhere. the one that gets that is gonna make Billy Gates look like Famous Amos. What people want is they walk into the room, push a single button and everything they've done or been working on is instantly transferred via wireless to the other units in the house. need to work on that data you were fiddling with on the bus? its already loaded into the desktop and ready to go in the correct program. Want to carry your progress and score to your PC or console? Bam, its there and ready to go.
The ONLY reason they are pushing the "everything should be smartphone" crap is because they make crazy profits on smartphones and with smartphones undergoing their own MHz wars they can get folks to change them often. But the idea is DUMB, its ignorant, and its missing the big picture which is people don't give a wet fart about the device its the DATA.
Yeah and having all that extra CPU and memory would have to be in a case...with a keyboard and mouse....what could we call it? Well since it sits on a desk could we maybe call it a desk..top? And as for the tablet? What EXACTLY is the point of raising the price, making the unit more complex with a phone doc, when the price of ARM chips have never been cheaper?
You know what all this smartphone silliness reminds me off? Ever see anybody spend too much money on a gadget they don't need, like say a high end grill? next thing you know they are grilling the carrots and every other thing they can get their hands on, just to justify buying it?
I've watched customers spend truly insane amount of smartphones.....know what they do with them? Angry Birds, check the weather, get on FB...that's it, that's all. Frankly the average Joe doesn't have a fucking clue on what to do with the incredible horsepower he has now so you answer is to raise price and complexity by adding some sort of multidock? Yeah....good luck with that.
I could hack the reg and have it tell you its doing The Hustle, does that mean its doing The Hustle? Of course not. MSFT needed a selling bullet point and it got it by doing a hack on the boot sequence, that's all.
Sadly it just shows how the level of tech knowledge has gone down here at /. because even 5 years ago this wouldn't have even been discussed, it would have had a single "Are you shitting me?" as first post and that would have been it.
