And you can thank Steve Jobs for that, thanks Steve! You see while USB was dirt cheap to implement Apple charged something like a buck a port to add Fw. Now if you are a hardware manufacturer, where margins are razor thin, why do you choose? the protocol that costs practically nothing, or the one that costs a buck a port? Firewire is a perfect example where the lesser tech won simply because the greater tech was too damned expensive. Thanks to the Apple greed Fw is practically toast and USB is everywhere. Thanks Steve!
I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened to that thunderbolt/lightwave whatever the hell they are calling it VS USB 3. It will be used on Macs, which are still a tiny niche (the big growth at Apple is iOS, not OSX) whereas everybody and their dog will have USB 3 just as you pointed out.
My question is this: when do we reach the max? What is the max? With Gb Ethernet I'm already slamming some of these drives as fast as they'll go, and SSD simply won't be able to match HDD for price anytime in the foreseeable future so they won't help because eventually you'll have to transfer to HDD anyway. So how fast is the fastest we can go without data corruption? I'm all for faster but not at the cost of increased corruption. So how fast can we pump data through the average desktop before corruption becomes an issue? How close are we to hitting this limit? I mean we've already hit a wall with CPUs (4Ghz) which is why we are adding cores now, so which will come next? Memory or storage?
What the fuck are you babbling about AC? Did I SOUND like a fucking developer? Did the words "fellow retailers" not even ring a TINY bell in your dumbass developer brain, or has the Java finally rotted through that thick melon?
And again you are pointing to developer bullshit whereas I'm telling you what is actually in the stores and which you can look for yourself, just walk into Walmart, Walgreen's Staples, etc, and check for yourself. In my local Walmart there is 1.5, 1.6, 2.1 and 2.2. Walgreen's right now is pushing a 1.4 Droid tablet.
But hell you're a lazy Internet ass so I guess I'll have to do the legwork for you so bitchslap to you, mister "I'm too fucking lazy to make an account" AC. Count up how many CCC 1.x devices are there. Hey, it is just like Hairyfeet said about Droid being awash in CCC running crap! Wow, he may actually know of which he speaks, unlike Mr AC, who only looks at a web page designed to kiss Droid developer booty and thus is about as truthful as MSFT's "Get the facts!" bullshit.
Yeah keep piling them taxes the poor can't afford, while many can't even afford to stay afloat, that's the ticket! Lets do it while in the middle of a depression, just to make sure it REALLY hurts.
Hell AZ is damned near ready to secede from the union as it is, maybe we in the south can join her. You people on the coasts better learn how to grow your own damned food REAL quick, as when that tax hits the trucks I hope you got $10 for a loaf of bread.
You people have no damned idea what it is like for the poor or those living in the rural states right now. I'd say you have about 30% of your population that would happily follow old crazy Joe Stalin or any similar flunky and make him el presidente for life if he promised "bread and jobs" and that number is growing by the day, meanwhile look at the voter turnout. See how tiny the number is? That is because all the rest no longer believe in democracy and consider the whole thing a sham.
Yeah, keep piling on those taxes, Egypt is point the way for those at the bottom. It is spreading folks, the revolutions are a spreadin. Don't think it can happen here?
Are all you FOSSies fucking high, or has the air being cut off from your brain by having your head stuck so far up RMS's hairy ass finally stopped any common sense from escaping? The guy said WinPhone will most likely bomb for everyone but Win developers and THAT is shilling? So I suppose I'm shilling for Linux when I say the Linux driver model sucks big hairy goat balls?
Geez what we need is an article on how FOSS went from a nice idea to a religion full of batshit loonies that make the RDF around Jobs look like a warm spring day. Give me a fricking break!
As for TFA, my prediction is companies are gonna look at all the lawsuits and the fact that Google won't indemnify either Android or WebM and bail. They'll either go MeeGo (since Intel WILL indemnify) or WinPhone, or do like Motorola and go their own way. I predict WinPhone will end up Nokia exclusively so MSFT can control the hardware like Apple (hell if you're gonna rip off Apple you might as well rip off the smart ideas, and controlling the whole stack is smart) and HP with WebM will probably put the last nails into RIM's coffin.
Final prediction: Winner...Apple, second place either MeeGo or WebM, third place WinPhone unless they can pull off one hell of a tie in to the X360 then they may be able to pull second just by bundling. Android? Will end up the choice of CCC (Cheapo Chinese Crap) where they don't give a shit about no steenkin license or IP issues.
Now watch someone say I'm shilling for MSFT by saying they'll get second place if they can bundle the hell out of WinPhone. Personally I don't believe they'll be able to pull it off unless they can somehow tie Halo into WinPhone, then the fratboy demographic might save their ass. Otherwise they're toast.
But how long will that continue AC? The OEMs have traditionally been VERY risk averse (which considering how long it takes to get a device from drawing board to shelves is understandable) and Google by refusing to indemnify their customers is leaving their collective asses hanging in the breeze.
I bet Motorola will be just the start, as more and more decide Google's plan of letting them take the risk while Google rakes in the money for searches is a BAD IDEA in 50 foot neon letters, especially when MSFT and Intel WILL indemnify them if they go WinPhone/MeeGo respectively.
Then add in the fragmentation (and despite what the fanbois say YES there is MAJOR fragmentation, just in my local Walmart there are 4 versions of Android for sale) of the Android platform and the fact that Google can't/won't rein in the CCC (Cheapo Chinese Crap) running Android 1.x that is helping to sour consumers on Android? Well I can't really blame the OEMs for looking for other alternatives. Talking to fellow retailers they tell me they have too much Android and the CCC 1.x crap that is pushing ANDROID in giant letter while giving a seriously shitty experience really isn't helping any.
So I'd say the time of Android may be running out. I know the only reason Android is growing in my area is carriers are practically giving the things away with contracts (a buddy got two just for signing up simply by asking) and most of the ones they are giving away are frankly CCC which is turning people off. My buddy that got two is counting the days until his contract is up so he can go iPhone, and I bet his is far from alone. Google refusing to indemnify or rein in the CCC is just adding to the misery. No wonder Motorola wants to jump ship.
Riiiight. Bullshit bullshit ANNNND bullshit, to quote Mel Brooks. The Linux FOSSies have been screaming "The Internet doesn't run Windows!" for a decade now, and guess what? They are still below the margin for error and are going nowhere fast. Why? Because their product is shit, and free shit is STILL shit. What happens to Linux in 6 months? Oh yeah look what happened I pushed the "break Linux NOW button" aka the update button and now half my damned drivers don't work and the ONLY way to fix it is hours trawling forums and CLI hell. Thanks Linus you giant douchebag for refusing to allow a stable ABI because it means you couldn't break shit at will. Asshole.
And the simple fact is it has been tried again and again and AGAIN and you know what? The public says "hey my stuff won't run on this!" and shitcans it. Just last Xmas the local stores got a load of ARM netbooks in, selling at the low price of $125 where are they now? I can pick them up all day on craigslist for less than $50 each, nobody wants it. Why? Does the Internet not work on them? The Internet works fine, it is all the x86 programs people want that don't work and therefor shitcanned it.
Look believe what you want, I've been around this dance before so I'll sit back and laugh. I watched the "future is the thin client!" dance (now being rehashed with "the future is the cloud!") and I watched the Apple CPU two step (BTW the reason Apple can get away with that shit is Macheads worship Steve as their Lord and Savior. I knew guys that bought mid 90s Macs, overpaying even though they were shit because they were Macs so if that isn't devotion I don't know what is) but you are simply forgetting we are talking over a billion Windows users which equals tens of billions of apps that are "must have" for these people to work and play. They don't go? Your device gets shitcanned.
And as for Win 8? Don't forget MSFT did this very same thing when it came to WinNT, which ran on every major arch there was. What happened? It is simple nobody bought it because it wouldn't run their apps and the same thing will happen again. ARM has its niche because cell devices like phones and pads are disposable, full stop. Nobody cares if the apps continue to run because the toss it in the garbage and buy a new one. But when gas hits $6 a gallon you're gonna see ARM dry up and blow away like a fart in the breeze because people will begin demanding devices that actually last, which means they'll begin wanting to keep their apps.
ARM has ZERO backwards compatibility, the infrastructure is a fragmented mess, meanwhile both AMD and Intel are coming out with sub 8w chips that do full 1080p and will run everything you have now and thanks to the Apple iSliver battery conditioning people to always carry a charger with them battery life won't mean shit. The writing is on the wall, hell bookmark this post and come back in 5 years to see how much I've posted comes true. those of us who have been doing this for decades has seen this dance over and over.
If MSFT would have followed up Vista with Vista II I'd have been right there with you, but getting spanked seemed to wake them up. The new Win 7 runs great on just 1Gb of RAM and Starter runs great even on Atom. The new chips will kick serious ass and ARM will be left to cells and pads, where their one advantage (low power above all) will let them hang onto their niche. Everywhere else? It will be cheap ULV X86 chips as far as the eye can see.
Don't know about him, but I refuse to buy a single Intel chip since they were caught bribing OEMs and rigging their compiler in douchebag behavior that made MSFT at their worst look like Care Bears. And the fact you can be fined or even jailed for simply refusing to do business with those whose beliefs you don't support simply shows that the USA is dead and has been replaced by a corporatist state that lets groups like AIPAC have too God damned much power. The fact that both the repub and dem candidate went to suck up to AIPAC before the last presidential election makes me want to puke. Is it any wonder the militants come up with names like ZOG for the USA? What the hell do you call it when the head of AIPAC brags about how much he pulls the strings here and nobody does or says shit?
As for TFA allow me to say I'm 110% for this as we have been bending over for the misery exporters too damned long and anything that tips the balance back is a good thing, so I don't care if the devil himself came up with the idea. Hell the Chinese are having to put nets around their factories because the workers are so miserable but even THAT isn't enough for the misery exporters, now they are looking at Vietnam and Malaysia because the workers in China are starting to want to be able to breathe and have more than a few cents in their pocket at the end of the day, the greedy peasants.
The misery exporters are destroying this country, they make it so one that cares about the environment can't compete because they can simply set up factories where they belch toxins and dump waste out the back door, they then lobby for H1-Bs which have slaughtered our tech sector and pretty much wiped out tech as a career in the USA by forcing those with degrees that cost $50k+ to compete with somebody straight off the boat that paid less than 5K for their "degree" if their resume isn't just complete bullshit (which after having to deal with a couple of "expert" H1-Bs that were using a Java dummies book? Yeah the whole thing smells), so anything that can help to stop the bleeding I'm ALL for.
Personally I'm starting to think the militia types are right, we are headed for another revolution like what is happening in the middle east right now. You have millions out of work while our president with a straight face pushes our young people to go ever deeper in debt with education (what is it, Bachelors is the new HS diploma now?) which they can't even erase by bankruptcy while at the same time flooding the markets with H1-Bs and allowing offshoring with NO penalties or even giving them fricking tax breaks while they send the jobs away, WTF?
I know plenty of people right now that would be damned glad to follow a Joe Stalin or our own crazy Austrian because anything has to be better than what they have now because no matter how hard they work they simply fall further behind. I look out my window at boarded up stores and houses with for sale signs as far as the eye can see. I personally wish MSFT all the luck in the world with this, but personally I think it is too little too late. The system has been corrupted beyond redemption, the top 1% hold more than 60% of the wealth and climbing while the people simply no longer believe in democracy because they see the two parties are just too sides of the same coin.
Sooner or later we'll have the new "leader of the people" rise, all it takes right now is a spark to set this powderkeg off. You simply have too many that no longer believe in democracy and someone with no hope and no future has nothing to lose. The ONLY reason it hasn't happened yet is the dems cutting checks like there is no tomorrow but you can't keep the presses running forever. When gas hits $6 a gallon and most won't even be able to afford bread then you'll see the shit hit the fan, mark my words. good luck MSFT you'll need it.
Ever hear of 'death of a thousand cuts"? It isn't just this one, there were hundreds, probably thousands, doing this exact same trick. Hell I used to have a link to a website where every single day they were showing off yet another PS3 cluster. There were guys buying thousands and guys buying a half a dozen and guys buying just three or four.
But the point is every single one was another cut as the ONLY thing taking X360s out was RRoD and MSFT had new ones out to customers as fast as they could ship. I bet if you look at the sell through rate and then figured PS3 clusters beside it you'd find they are seriously hurting Sony's numbers.
Now are Sony a bunch of douches? Yes they are, as I said removing an advertised feature without compensation should be illegal. But if you look at the figure Sony has been pretty much dead last this entire generation. BD was too expensive, the cell is a PITA to port games to, one mistake after another. And I'd argue that OtherOS and so many machines being turned into clusters straight off the line was just one more kidney punch Sony can ill afford to take ATM.
Actually in this case the ranters would be correct, there is NO IP V4 shortage there is a serious mismanagement of IP V4 addresses. Something like 30% MAX is what is being used now. The rest? Squatters, dead blocks, companies squatting.
We should treat it like we do phone numbers. You pay? You keep. You don't pay? it goes back in the pool. Imagine how many of them squatting on A blocks would hand them over if they were told its a buck a month per address.
So in this case it really is just horrible mismanagement which could be easily fixed. Instead we'll deal with bullshit like double NATs and horrible kludges, simply because how dare corporations actually have to pay for anything instead of being able to make money off of something that was originally given to them free. I mean how dare they actually have to have management of this resource?
Ubuntu 10 new enough for you? I'm so sick of this "He tried Linux 10 years ago" bullshit where you FOSSies stick your damned head in the sand and pretend your asses don't stink. You want to know why Linux suck massive amounts of ass, do you? I'll be happy to tell you it is because Linus is a massive douche who won't allow you to have what everyone else from Windows, BSD, hell even OS/2 has had for a fricking decade, and that is a stable driver abi.
Want to know what happens when you upgrade (which you fucking have to do thanks to the 6 month death march)your lovely Linux? Oh look half my damned drivers don't work now and the ONLY way to fix it is 5 hours in the God Damned CLI which frankly needs to DIAF. Don't even compare yourselves to Windows and Apple because between Win 7 and OSX SL you guys are MAYBE at Win95 levels. And Wine? Yeah because the average user knows how to spend 4 hours fucking with funky CLI to get their apps to work, only to have it shit itself and die when the death march breaks everything again.
Linux is a great SERVER OS but as a desktop it is ass, and it is ass because the head of the thing is an asshole. Don't believe me, take it from the mouth of the man himself who says "Linux isn't designed, it grows like a virus " LOL, you have the fricking main developer who admits there is NO plan and shit just grows like a fungus, and you wonder why drivers don't work? Well fricking duh!. Link is here read it yourself. His excuse, which is just like an asshole in that it stinks, is that it would lock down the kernel, aka he wouldn't be able to break shit anytime he had an itch. Well fuck you Linus, you are holding the world back and need a good firing. The reason why sites like this exist is because all the excuses fanbois have to come up with to cover douchebags like Linus keeping Linux down.
So do us all a favor and don't bring up your hobbyist crapfest when we grownups are talking Windows or OSX, okay? Your shitty backwards ass design makes it a perfect example of developer hostility, with ZERO backwards compatibility, even for the fucking drivers, and CLI is a damned God to you people. It is the most backwards ass fucked up POS I've ever had the displeasure of touching, and it is about as ready for the public as dropping them all in Plan 9 and expecting them to do everything with a 70s era term (You can stick your CLI BTW, as the public has already said in 50 foot letters DO NOT WANT).
And I got news for you sparky, the ONLY reason why Linux has a hold in servers is the fact that Windows CALs are a damned mess. If MSFT was to drop them to a simple $1 a slot Linux would dry up and blow away like a fart in the breeze. Even my old CLI head admins admit that the new WinServer is a fucking cakewalk to manage and the crazy price of CALs keeps them away. So any market you have there is just a gift from the MSFT middle management, sorry. Embedded you kick MSFT's ass, as they don't do tiny anything.
But until you fire that douche Torvalds and get a real designer in there and make it so I NEVER have to deal with CLI and NEVER will my customers have to deal with same? It is a giant DO NOT WANT. Frankly there is a good reason why even with a price of nothing it has gone nowhere, and that is because free shit is still shit.
And people wonder why Sony killed OtherOS? Look I think Sony pulled a dick move by killing a feature after sale, hell I would argue that is probably illegal, like selling a new car with this killer stereo and then sending a remote signal that killed it dead, but up until recently Sony was losing money on EVERY PS3 and I would argue that even now they are not making enough on PS3 hardware to stay afloat because by having to compete with the X360 which is just insanely cheap they have to cut those margins so thin you can read a newspaper through them!
It is really simple folks: the magic number in consoles is the "sell through" number, or the number of games you sell per console because thanks to licensing Sony and MSFT get a cut of EVERY game sold and while MSFT is currently laughing all the way to the bank with the highest number, something like 8 per console, Sony is barely surviving on 3. Then you add in these groups buying PS3s by the thousands that will never bring another dime in for Sony because these guys are buying absolutely ZERO after console product from them and you can see OtherOS was a BAD idea.
Now it WAS Sony's fault for putting OtherOS support on every console in the first place, just as it was Sony's fault to tie themselves to Blu Ray thus falling into the trap of being seen more as an "entertainment center" than a console. They sank too much money into cell, made an overly complex machine that works better as an HPC cluster than as a games console, and as a BD player better than a gaming machine. Most of my friends that have a PS3 have one or two PS3 exclusives for it and the rest of their games are all X360 so they can play them on XBL.
But the simple fact is Sony is hurting, they're hurting bad. Their sell through is shit, the console costs are too high when compared to the competition that are mopping up while not having nearly the hardware costs that they have, and having tens of thousands of machines taken straight from the line and locked in a lab where they'll never make a dime on them was just one more body blow they just couldn't take. Now I'm sure some will point out the official Sony line, but what did you expect them to say? "Look folks we're bleeding to death here?" boy MSFT would have had a field day with THAT press release!
So in the end what Sony should have done was offered from the start a "PS3 Cluster Edition" at $1000 a pop, with the higher costs justified by having say a fibre channel NIC added to the PS3 instead of offering OtherOS support on the bog standard hardware. this would have netted them enough cash they wouldn't lose a penny on PS3 cluster sales, the hackers could buy the kit if they wanted to have a cell CPU, groups like this would still get an HPC for a hell of a lot cheaper than a traditional model, and everyone could be happy. But lets not pretend Sony is making enough on PS3 units to afford having tens of thousands of units roll off the line into oblivion, they just ain't doing that well.
But nobody ever asks the important questions, such as : Why did Windows win (hint: It is NOT a conspiracy)? Why hasn't everyone ditched their desktops for Linux on ARM? Hell why hasn't Linux on x86 gotten more than the margin for error even though it has been free for 15 years?
I'll tell you why, and it'll be the same reason why Windows on x86 will ultimately win against ARM on the desktop: elitism. Before WinNT server OSes were a CLI heavy, having to know shitloads of arcane commands good old boys club where only the "true" admins were allowed to play and that is how they liked it. Linux today has that same problem, anything that makes it easier for the user automatically gets accused of "dumbing down" for the "noobs". Hell some of the developers are so anti-user I'm shocked they don't have the pic of Johnny Cash flipping the bird as a loading screen before dropping you into a shell and demanding all code in brainfuck.
But Windows came along where "lets be friendly for users!" was a mantra and where any middle manager could set up file and print serving and totally changed the game because they took away a LOT of frustration. Hell I could teach my 15 year old how to run a basic Windows domain in less than two weeks easy.
Another example of user hostility and elitism is in this very thread where so many are screaming about how backwards compatibility is bad and evil, well you know what? For the users of the world allow me to say "go fuck yourselves, because we don't care what you think developers!" That's right, we LIKE backwards compatibility! My mom LIKES being able to play her AoE I and ancient match 3 games on her new PC, I LIKE being able to run all my old games and programs, I LIKE being able to stick with Office 2K even on my new x64 quad running Win 7.
The developers here seem to forget we the users are the ones buying the hardware and while developers may not give a shit or have anything invested in their software (hell as long as they have an IDE and a compilers they're happy) we the users have time, money, and experience invested in our programs and we do NOT care whether you think our shit isn't cool anymore we LIKE it and we WILL keep it!
So I would say the whole ARM VS x86 debate is just a microcosm of the whole developers VS users debate, and I'm betting once again the users win over the developers. Not everyone (in fact I would say damned few) want to get on the Apple "toss every couple of years" treadmill when it comes to their work and play programs. ARM can get away with that shit in its current niche because cell phones and pads are considered disposable items by the users and they frankly don't have shit invested in them. Like their cell they just toss and get another one, and never expect any of their programs to work.
The reason ARM (and Linux) is doomed to fail on the desktop is people DO expect to be able to keep their programs and with both unless you have compiling skills (which knocks out a good 85% of the public) you WILL take the new hotness or be SOL, because the developers only care about the new hotness NOT whether or not they break everything that came before it. But the public simply won't go along with that on the desktop thanks to Windows showing them programs CAN be run year after year, OS after OS, and it'll all "just work" for the most part.
To me it all smacks of developer elitism, and that way lost before and WILL lose again. The public simply won't go along.
As for the last band I uploaded it to Emule and Fasttrack, the name of the band is "Big Silver" I don't know if the tracks are still there or not. They are kind of a roots pop kind of thing, think Old 97s meets Weezer.
As for the new trio I'm working on shoot me an email and I'll be happy to shoot you the FB page. I'm sad to say I still haven't quite figured out the whole FB thing (my GF is a whizz at it, so I let her do most of that stuff) and can't figure out how to set limits on the pics. Stupid me I bought her a new digital camera and now I've got pics of me posted all over the damned thing.
It is kinda a dark blues/funk/rock kinda thing but I warn you the tracks on there are VERY rough as we did them on a little Boss two track digital running off the board while we built our own little 16 track (more than enough for a trio) digital studio. We are probably looking at mid June before the album gets finished since the drummer became an alcoholic so the guitarist and I are doing it all ourselves. That way we can just hand the finished product to several drummers and see which can best play what we wrote. Lucky for us Brian (guitarist/vocals) is also a drummer and I'm good at programming my Korg so drums shouldn't be a problem. We've found an engineer that is great and will work with our digital tracks, so all we have to do is shoot him a DVD full of uncompressed Wav files and he'll mix it and hand us a gold master.
Anyway shoot me an email and I'll shoot you the FB page and a link to one of those upload sites if I can find one where I can just drop 100Mb in a compressed.rar without jumping through a shitload of hoops as I have the two Big Silver albums in MP3 format on my drive.
Well ARM is a hell of a lot less power using but it is also a hell of a lot less powerful clock for clock, so it evens out doesn't it? I mean sure in a cell phone where its main job is running a highly specialized OS, with tons of little support chips to help it out it does great, but I wouldn't want to do my day to day desktop computing on it.
I never did understand the Intel VS ARM comparisons because it made as much sense to me as comparing a Peterbuilt and a Kia. Sure the Kia is gonna get a hell of a lot better gas mileage but I sure wouldn't want to try to move into an apt using only a Kia to haul my furniture. You try one of those AMD or Intel ULV netbooks and comparing it to the little ARM netbooks is like night and day. I could easily see myself doing most of my day to day on the X86 and not getting frustrated, whereas anything not expressly thought up and prepared for by the ARM netbook OEM and it is welcome to slow town.
So while the Itanic will go down as just another failed Intel experiment, like that ARM based chip they tried to get everyone to switch to in the 80s, I really can't see X86 going anywhere, especially once AMD solved the 4Gb barrier with the X64 extensions. The little specialized devices will stay ARM while the general computing will stay X86.
I'm sure there will be a few crossover niches, such as ARM for specialized servers which stress low power over everything else, but for the rest of the jobs where performance matters I just don't see ARM stepping up to AMD or Intel quad levels of performance, not without killing the low power selling point. It is just one of those things you can't get around, faster equals hotter and more power usage, whereas slow chips with less complexity use less power.
I don't know about that considering that IE and Webkit are currently safer than Firefox for all of those running a modern version of Windows (Vista and 7) thanks to the fact that both IE and Webkit support low rights mode and Firefox doesn't. In fact the only way to get Firefox to actually function with lower rights is to disable the security features that makes low rights mode secure in the first place!
Now will I ever go back to IE, or offer it to my customers as a recommendation? Not a chance in hell, after spending years cleaning up the mess that was the abandoned IE6 there is too much bad blood there, and thanks to Webkit I don't have to. But there are millions on modern Windows versions and for ALL of them currently IE is safer than FF by a long shot and if they promote that? I could see many simply sticking with IE rather than switching.
It is just common sense, why would you run the browser at a higher permission level than required? The browser is running unsigned third party code from the wild and wooly web, the lower the rights it has the better. Why Mozilla can't manage to add support after 4 years is just ridiculous. I'm currently typing this on FF 4 (which looks like a bad Chrome ripoff to me) but without low rights mode and now that the Chrome extensions have all my must haves like ABP and Forecastfox means this will probably be the last time I use FF or hand it to my customers.
It is a shame, as I've been a FF users since the early days, but what good is having a modern OS with enhanced security if the programs that benefit from it don't actually use it? So while I won't be going to IE I will be saying goodbye to FF for Comodo Dragon which gives me all the speed of Chrome and low rights mode without phoning home to Google.
I really had hopes for FF 4, but it seems like they are spending their time aping Chrome instead of simply making FF better. As XP dies out more and more people will be able to use the security features that FF simply doesn't support. What is the point of aping Chrome (such as tabs on top, no file/edit/view, bookmarks on the right corner) if you don't copy the important stuff like the increased security? Feels like cargo cult usability at play to me.
And I'm sure the fanbois will waste their mod points, but it doesn't make 2+2=5 nor will it change reality. You wouldn't run your OS as admin, would you? You agree that least permissions for the task is simply best secvurity practices, yes? Then why would you insist on running a browser that runs at higher permissions and in fact dies hard if you try to run it with less permissions than the user? Seems like a bad design problem to me, maybe that is why Moz still hasn't added it even after 4 years, Gecko is simply not capable of running with lower permissions.
I think the only proper reaction to such an idiotic figure would have to be this one
That said I'm personally all for this, as the more complete idiocy and court wasting the *.A.As do the more likely we are to wake up the average Joe from their slumber and get them to realize what a total fucking joke the copyright system has become. I mean for the love of Pete Walt Disney's first works are STILL under copyright and the man has been a corpse for longer than many of us have been on this earth.
Now how in the hell does that promote "progress of the arts and sciences"? Answer: it doesn't, it is simply a way for a "leecher class" to make eternal checks off locking up the entire culture of a race. How many works have already been lost simply because nobody could legally make a copy and the copyright holders couldn't figure out a way to "monetize the IP" and just let it rot?
As someone who has tried dealing with the minefiled that is copyrights (had an idea with an engineer friend of mine to have "DOSbox...on a stick" where we would take rare old DOS games and have them preprogrammed to run on a USB stick, no muss, fuss, or hassle, run the games anywhere on any hardware) I can tell you that many of the "IP" is forever locked in a maze of dead companies and murky rights and the few we actually found would rather the games be lost forever than to get less than 80% or 6 figures for a game that frankly wasn't even a third stringer, which means that by the time the copyrights on these early games expire in another 80 years or so all copies will have long since been lost forever.
How does this enrich us as a culture? How does this help us preserve our history? We need to go back to the original 25 years and have a "use it or lose it" clause where if you don't sell a product for three years after release it goes PD so that we aren't losing our history as what is happening now. And it isn't just games, rare old bootlegs and artist's early demo releases before they made it big, early show and movies that some now defunct studio couldn't figure out how to monetize ALL of these things are being lost on a daily basis because of nothing but sheer greed by the leecher class and it needs to end.
Lenin says "a capitalist will gladly sell you the rope with which to hang him" and let's hope the greed of these leechers will help to destroy the bloodsucking business they've created. Because as it is our entire culture is being locked behind paywalls and anything the lecchers can't figure a way to make buckets of cash on is left to die, and it is frankly disgusting and wrong.
And sorry about the length, but as a musician who hopes to make a living plying his trade I find the leechers a disgusting drain and barrier to access to the world. I uploaded the singles from my last 2 bands to P2P and I'll upload this newest one as soon as we get it mastered as we want you to hear us and hopefully come to the shows, by a shirt, hell we'll even put your name in the raffle to win one of our guitars if you buy the CD (which will have a link to download the entire album in MP3 as well as some not released tracks in the liner notes) and I have NO doubt that like my last two bands we'll make damned good money by treating people right instead of dealing with the lechers. Personally the sooner that whole payola system DIAF the better.
What you need is this hotfix but since Samba does NOT conform to the Windows indexing protocol it WILL be slower than native.
If the NAS is an x86 or x64 machine I would just pick up a cheap copy of Win 7 Home Server (or real WinServer, look around you can find copies of WinServer SBS usually cheap) and then Win 7 will give you native speed on indexing network shares.
It is no different than how Linux machines don't index Windows shares at native speed, they simply don't speak the same language, but the hotfix will give you a "quick and dirty" workaround albeit one that is slower than native. Finally this link will give you a nice overview and lists which combos are supported.
Sadly as has always been the case with Samba they are usually a day late and a dollar short, even though MSFT released the protocol specs as part of their deal with the EU. Can't really blame them though, as the FOSS insistence on "free as in beer" simply doesn't give them the extra manpower required to keep up with such complex protocols. If past performance is an indication you should have Win 7 native search integrated in Samba about the time Windows 9 comes out. Sorry.
Because even a broken clock is right twice a day? We have seen from the lawsuits over their book scanning that Google DOES play fast and loose with the rules, then add in the fact that Google refuses to indemnify their OEMs that use Android or WebM and the fact that while Google makes the money on the searches they take NONE of the risks that the OEMs are facing spells BAD NEWS in my book.
Well Google be able to pull it off? Who knows, balls and a lot of money have gotten many people very far in the past. But one has to ask how long the usually VERY risk averse OEMs are gonna be willing to have their asses just hanging in the breeze ready to be hit by patent trolls while Google rakes in the cash while not stepping in to their corner to share the burden.
Sorry but I believe the first poster was right, this will be good for MSFT, Meego and H.264 and bad with a capital b for Android. You can go WinPhone and be indemnified by MSFT or Meego and be covered by Intel. MPEG-LA doesn't indemnify but with their patent portfolio anybody that makes anything to do with video or audio would be suicidal to step in the ring with them. Go Android and you better have some good lawyers on retainer. Now if you are a risk averse OEM, which would you choose? Free as in beer isn't so free if I have to pay lawyers to constantly fight lawsuits now is it?
That is because you are using the wrong approach. Instead of using Win 7 desktop search use the libraries feature and then you should be able to index the libraries no prob. That is what libraries are for, to give you a central location for accessing things placed all over.
So the problem isn't Win 7, the problem is you are trying to do things the old way when Win 7 has better tech with libraries.
Thank you, I so rarely get to use this in a sentence...WHOOSH! You kinda missed the point of the story didn't ya bud? The reason the prosecutor brought such a weak case was he was counting on bullshitting the jury and frankly would have gotten away with it if he hadn't been fooled by my mom's appearance.
You see if you look at my mom you instantly think "Stereotypical little old lady" which is why he didn't bother to ask her any background questions, which he did to weed out smart people like engineers, tech guys, etc during jury selection. She is 5 foot nothing, snow white hair, has a little cane, hell she looks like the "bad kitty!" lady from Madagascar 2.
Of course by looking at the stereotype what mister hotshot prosecutor didn't realize is the lowest IQ in my family is 145 and that while other children got Horton hears a Who I got best Sc/fi writers of 1975 as mom believed the best way to stimulate a growing mind was to challenge it. She believes that goes for herself so she reads the most convoluted plot heavy Sci/fi fantasy books she can find, which does keep her sharp as a tack.
So the point my friend is are you willing to bet your life on the fact that the prosecutor managed to miss a single smart person in the sea of trailer trash, so that there will be ONE person smart enough to see through his bullshit? Because public pretenders are a bad joke. Calling that an adequate defense is like saying that cardboard is an adequate defense against a 45 slug. The prosecutor has been doing that job for years, so he has his moves down cold. He knows how to use every single mannerism and move to influence, just like an actor. So your only defense is a jury which thanks to the way prosecutors can stack a jury is nearly always full of morons.
And you're willing to bet the next 30 years of your life on them? Frankly after talking to friends and family that have done their duty (a good 80% getting tossed during selection for actually having a job that required a brain) I wouldn't trust an average jury to pick their nose, much less pick the innocent from the guilty. Like I said that man would have been doing 10 to 20 because the jury like Joe Pesci.
What the guy is probably talking about is low rights mode, which is why I'm starting to move my customers AWAY from Firefox to Chromium based Comodo Dragon. I mean for the love of Pete the tech has been out since 2007 and FF STILL doesn't support it? WTH? It didn't seem to take the webkit based any time at all to add support, so what's up?
And I'm sorry, despite what some of those here say right now it is more dangerous to use FF than IE 9 because without low rights mode FF is running with the same privileges as the user whereas IE 9 is running at the MUCH lower guest privileges. Look at it this way: Everyone made fun of XP because of running as admin, right? And we ALL agree that least privileges for the task are the most secure way, yes? So why would you want the browser which runs untested third party code off the web and is the closest to "bare metal" with the wild and dangerous web, running with higher privileges than necessary?
So I hope they have added supported for low rights mode, surely after 4 years it should be finished. I also hope they fixed the memory leak issues I've been having on older office machines where FF uses memory when you watch videos and never seems to give it back so after half a day of use it has sucked up ALL the RAM and you have to close and restart. I really hope FF 4 is all that and a bag of chips. Because frankly after all the trouble I've been having with the 3.6.x branch, along with the risk of giving FF to anyone on a modern OS, I've been switching my customers over and so far they are happy.
I'd rather stick with FF but it is my job to keep them safe, and right now FF doesn't do that and sadly the other poster is right, right now IE 9 is MUCH safer thanks to lower privileges than FF, although I'd rather avoid IE all together and just switch them over to Chromium.
Hell you wouldn't even need to do that (although I find it funny as hell I got modded down for daring to suggest FOSS should cost even a penny even though RMS sold Emacs) since you could be selling access to the infrastructure as well as the distro.
I mean you can have the distro code but where does it say I have to run an updated repo to keep you happy? It doesn't. And forums staffed by professionals, with live chats scheduled with the actual developers of the code so you can ask them questions? Answer: it doesn't.
There are plenty of ways that you can get rid of free as in beer without getting rid of free as in freedom, so how sad is it that the FOSS guys here are such cheapskates they can't even stand the thought of paying a cent. But what should I expect when the last I read 1/3rd of the websites are running CentOS even though RH consistently gives more back than anyone else but how dare anybody pay shit, right? Free as in "I won't pay shit" is all that matters, yes?
It shouldn't surprise me as the last time I got into an argument with a Linux admin over software costs he said "If they won't take a FOSS solution I'll just load up pirate Windows rather than give MSFT a dime." You know what? Communism lost, get over it. things cost money, developers have families to feed. it shouldn't be so God damned horrible to even suggest changing to a new design so they can consistently get paid. But I guess all that matters is "free as in beer" no matter what, right?
Uh huh, let me tell you a little story bud. my mom did her civic duty, even used up her vacation time to sit on a jury. Afterward she came in looking like a ghost and said "NEVER take a jury trial EVER! ALWAYS take a judge!" when I asked her what happened here is what I was told:
It was a simple arson case which frankly never should have been brought to trial. The investigator admitted under oath he didn't know WHAT had started the fire, couldn't even say for sure it was arson, the guy had NO motive as he didn't even have enough insurance to cover the place and was gonna have to file bankruptcy and probably lose his home as well, yet the jury voted 11 to 1 to convict Why would they do that with no evidence? "Because he is Italian and Italians are in the mob and burn buildings. Haven't you seen Goodfellas?" That's right children, if my mom hadn't been on the jury that guy would be 10 to 20 thanks to a Joe Pesci performance.
As for TFA MSFT should have done the smart thing and just bought the company out. It just shows what a shitty leader Ballmer is compared to Gates because once it looked like they had a chance Gates would have just bought them out and called it a day. The last thing MSFT needed was more negative publicity, especially with regards to their Office suite which is what this is about. They should have just bought them out and moved on.
Exactly! And why do FOSS advocates insist on acting like getting paid is bad? hell even RMS sold copies of Emacs! I think this could be a GREAT chance to say once and for all the Free is FOSS stands for freedom and NOT beer. In fact I'd say it is the beer part that is holding FOSS back, as imagine if those writing the programs that made up the distros got paid to simply work on those programs
Hell I bet it wouldn't even be that hard to figure up. lets say that the community decided that $10 per desktop is the price (seems fair to me and still undercuts MSFT by a good $90 at retail and $20 at OEM prices) I would propose it be divided thusly:
$3 for the "mother sauces" as I call them, that is the RH/Slax/Debian/what have you that you base the distro on, $2 for any RAND licensing and any left over being used to buy patents and copyrights to give to the community, $2.50 to your packager, that is Canonical, Texstar, etc, and $2.50 to be divided to those writing the software in the repos and packaged in the distros, with share determined by how often a package is downloaded or included in the distro.
This would both work to help support the community as a whole by giving it more funds for developers, marketing, testers, QA, etc and give developers of the software both the money to dedicate more time to their programs and the incentive to keep improving and listening to the people actually using their software as the higher it ranks the more money they earn.
Now of course this is a VERY simple view and a lot would have to be worked out, but it would sure beat the "buy me a beer please!" kind of begging many have to do now, while at the same time encouraging developers to come to the FOSS platform. After all look at what just the chance to make good money has done for the iPhone, with an explosion of developers, most of whom won't strike it rich but are still plugging away trying to make the best app they can so they can make a living off of it.
But even RMS has said as long as they respect the four freedoms charging is perfectly okay, and at the same time helping the developers and the community by giving them some tighter interaction. In FOSS right now there really isn't a way to "vote with your dollars" unless you have enough money to afford to hire coders to take the code and rewrite it how you wish, and this would give even the average Joe a chance to be heard.
Writing software just for a warm fuzzy feeling might be fine if we were living in Star Trek, where one could push a button and get a steak, but that ain't the way things are. Making FOSS strictly free as in freedom would give a shot of funding straight into the heart of the community and help foster competition and innovation.
Thank you and I hope you remember that when someone brings up the stereotype of southerners being nothing but bigots. Because here I am in the middle of the south (North Central AR) and after raising a gay child I quickly found out how far we have really come.
Not only is most folks really accepting (hell I live in a town with even a Christian college and nobody blinks an eye at the nice lesbian couple that run the pizza parlor walking holding hands and kissing) but we have not one but two full blown gay communities (LR River market, Hot Springs Old District) where they are as obvious as anything you'd see on the coasts and nobody cares or raises a fuss.
I was really worried when I took the boys to spend the week with me and Brenda at her parents in the mountains, sadly even I was thinking in the stereotype, but her whole family treated both boys like members of the family and not a word was spoken. Well there WAS one word said, Brenda's dad pulled me aside and asked "Is the youngest gay, if you don't mind me asking?" and I thought "here it comes" but when I said yes he just got a thoughtful look and said "Thought so. My third cousin Larry was gay, we knew it from when he was little too. How anybody could think they ain't born that way is beyond me" and that was that.
So just treat them like family, give them lots of love and support (because it IS hard with all the bigots in this world, especially those that look through their bibles for reasons to hate) and NEVER try to force them to be how you "think" they should be. Sadly we have seen what that is like first hand because one my my youngest boy's schoolmates is gay, with his parents forcing him to go to boxing lessons and out on dates to "toughen him up" and I can already tell he'll be a raging alcoholic before the kid turns 20. Sadly his choices are that or never see his family again, as they have made it clear they won't have any "sissies" in their family.
My boy after seeing that asked me point blank "Would you ever do that to me?" and I did what I always do, I told him the truth: I said "if you bring home a scumbag I'll be happy to point out you are dating a loser, just as my father was happy to point out when I was dating a drunken skank. if you bring home a decent person I won't treat him any different, same as you didn't treat my girl any different because I'm white and she's Cherokee." He said "Why would I treat Brenda bad just because she isn't the same as you? She is sweet and kind and you two are great together!" and I said "That's the point, it is what kind of person you are, not the outside that counts."
I sure as hell never planned on having any kids, but sadly fate took my sister way too soon. But the oldest is now in his second year of Pre-Med and on the Dean's List and the youngest is trying to decide between his love of computer generated art and being a pastry chef. As long as they are happy and have a decent life that is what matters to me, shame others can't see what is important like that. life is too short to be filling it with hate and bigotry.
Anyway shoot me an email and I'll shoot you the FB page and a link to one of those upload sites if I can find one where I can just drop 100Mb in a compressed .rar without jumping through a shitload of hoops as I have the two Big Silver albums in MP3 format on my drive.
